@Capt Shiny I owned an '01 9-5 Aero Wagon for 14 years. I loved that car. Thankfully the only noticeable stock GM part was the climate control system. It looked like it was lifted right out of a Buick. Everything else at least looked Saab.

@@chloedegurechaff1941 GM had every opportunity to make Saab profitable though, but they kept on forcing dumb decisions. They wanted Saab to compete with BMW, Mercedes and Audi, but they forced Saab to stick with FWD until the last couple of years. When GM made a deal with Lotus to make sports cars, they arbitrarily sold the resulting car as an Opell. Opel is a bland brand, so no one bought them. It was so bad that GM had to send them all back to Lotus to have every conceivable extra mounted to make the car seem more "Average Joe"-ey. Even then, they remained on showroom floors for years after production ceased. Had they been sold as Saab Sonett, it'd boosted the status of the whole brand AND sold better.

I have owned it now for over 10yrs and other than scheduled maintenance which is pricy but not unrealistic given the original MSRP; it has been and continues to be my favorite car. I now have an Alfa Giulia and a 124 Abarth Spider also and if I could only take one car with me it would be the Saab. Incredible on the highway, the BEST seats and nothing about it annoys me even after 90K miles and 10+ years. Saabs are fantastic, and if you understand the subtlety and approach they took in the design of how everything works, it really stands out as special. Not saying its perfect, the steering is sloppy in sharp turns and the turbo is slow to spool up, but its a relaxing car with a fun edge, and thats what Saab is all about.

Usually its a whole bunch of half drunk dudes at a BBQ trying to figure out exactly when did Saab die exactly, usually devolving into I'm pretty sure it was 2010 and someone else will come up with a reply that the corpse was still technically twitching in 2014, but the definition of life is fairly loose at that latter stage, so maybe it was 2013. my girlfriends first car was a saab 9-3 aero. we had a lot of fun in that car, she let me drive it a few times and it took us countless places. it was comfortable, but only in the way you’d describe a worn in couch as comfortable. there was no “wow” factor. it was the first turbocharged car i had ever driven, but if there wasn’t a little ‘turbo’ gauge i wouldn’t have noticed. it was a fun car and the exterior styling is a bit nostalgic for me. 17 years old with no real responsibilities, just hopping in the passenger seat and taking off. to her it was her baby. and when it inevitably shit the bed at 140k miles and there was no way to realistically keep it alive, she had to begrudgingly admit it was time for a new car. You will be missed, Saabrina.

By this time GM had fully put the stranglehold on Saab. You don't have to go much further back before you get better and better cars. Looking at 9-5s for instance they peak in 03-05 and go downhill steadily from there with cheaper and cheaper interiors and more bargain bin parts.
Saab's decline and ultimate demise wasn't pretty.

Such a nice feature to have in its urheimat Scandinavia, which I expect also has roads that suit the engine power better too. Also, the gauge cluster that puts the speedometer front and center instead of prioritizing it and the tachometer equally, and the tiny lil A/C vent in the glove compartment that keeps drinks sorta cool in the summer! I loved all the little quirks, even if Saab was ultimately unsustainably quirky.
