    Changed it on DOZENS of ZF’s. Its a MUST to change mechatronics seals. Sometimes solenoids go bad. I use liquimoly 1800 ATF and proper filling procedure. This has fixed 10/10 shifting and transmission problems. Even ZF says the fluid is only good for 78k

    If you do it, do it properly
    - Change the whole system, 9 liters not only 6 as is used to do usually, here are the main problems
    - Correct ATF for ZF
    - Change 5 little gaskets/pieces upper mechatronic unit
    - Change sleeve conector
    - Main gasket and filter
    - Fill with temperature instructions
    - Go to BMW if you don't have software to finish the service

    I changed mine. I have an F10 520d with a zf8 speed and 180k km. The gearbox was running fine before and after the oil change. I would recommend to do it as preventative maintenance only if it is done correctly. You must have the car level and when filling the oil pan with new oil, do it at the correct temperature. You also need a diagnostics tool the read the gearbox oil temp when the engine is running during the second fill and perform an adaptation gearbox reset when finished. Finally only use ZF approved oil.

  • @turbotrana
    @turbotrana Před 4 lety +3

    I have recently done 3 ZF boxes with Liqui Moly brand oil. All fine. I did a 550000km E39 5 speed with an unknown history on the oil changes, I have had it since 450000km. Surprising to me was relatively clean. Am in Australia and would definately recommend changing the oil. I put the pan with a drain plug so next drains alot easier. I would only ever do the pan drain method, I would never have a shop use their flushing machine as this is where the failures are happening as the drain flush machine will introduce wrong fluid and crud into the box if done by butcher mechanic. I do regular diff and power steering oil changes on a fleet of over 10 family cars and find it helps alot in preventing noises and problems.

    If you wait until you have problems to change the fluid, then yes it might grenade a week later. If the transmission is good b4 the fluid change, it will still be good after the fluid change (assuming it's done right).
    Ive changed the fluid on my e46 @ 96k miles, and then more 2 times over the next 70k miles, and it hasn't grenaded (gm trans, Valvoline MaxLife ATF). Still shifts good.

    I agree with what you said, i live in very hot climate country the local BMW dealer said the ATF is lifetime usage don't even need to change, that's 100% BS. After couple of years my E60 GB seals, clutches & mechatronic was jammed and broken. The ATF inside had became thick and black just like diesel causes everything jammed. I own a e60 535d lci, 450k+ on the zf6hp28 gearbox, got it fully rebuilt, all worn parts changed out with new oil and filter, works like a dream now, only thing to note is if you have a remap for your engine, you need to remap your gearbox aswell, because the gearbox stock map with line pressure is made to work with stock engine torque figures, if the engine is remapped and gearbox left with stock map/line pressure, the TCU thinks that something is not right, gets confused and starts to slip and not lock up when throttle is applied at certain speeds, causing premature wear and tear to the gearbox. These gearboxes handle massive power and torque. This part is off topic but most baltic drift cars use 3.0d 5spd zf manual gearboxes from like e46's and e39's because they are cheap and reliable as hell

    Change your oil, my Grandpa had a new car, 11 years later, 60.000 km by a 6hp26, transmission failure, new Transmission, 5800€ +installing.
    Why changing your oil?
    Even in EU if you stuck for half an hour or longer in stop and go by 20 Degrres outside, you get Transmission temp from 100 degrees, that‘s ok, no hot temperature sign in i drive, but you oil (Lifeguard Fluid6) is good for only 86 degrees, so it get demaged.
    Dignity comes over time in the oil, which isn‘t good, cause no transmission is 100% close.
    Gaskets get‘s old that hold the oil from cables back that go into your Gearbox Mechatronic -> Gearbox failure, new Machatronic 1200€
    For that to change, or the Gasket that hold the oil back, the oil pan has to get away.
    Change it every 80-100k km, like zf sais, and do it by them, cause you need a expensive machine for this.
    Also the oil filter get‘s full over time
    -> bad oil flow + kickdown is not good, in worst case too low oil pressure, damage.
    (Cold start and you‘re car runs not/slow/after anview seconds in drive), change as soon as possible Oil+Filter :)

    • @martinigamer
      @martinigamer Před 4 lety +2

      ZF transmissions are hard to destroy, but very old oil is a way to get it done.
      Download on android xHP Flashtool, buy stage 3, and you‘re gearbox will stay longer. Transmission tuning is not like engine tuning, it makes transmissions stronger!
      By questions, ask xHP or me.
      For example, stock 6hp28 is able to handle ~ 600NM, with Stage 3 up to 1000NM :)
      Believe me, it‘s a secret hint, you will not recognize that‘s this is your transmission:)

  • @thomhollands
    @thomhollands Před 3 lety

    Not sure I agree with this in the slightest. I appreciate the climate in Europe differs to that os the americas but i can’t see why you wouldn’t follow service advice from a German manufacturer on their product. Zf say 60-80k for the zf8hp service and I expect it has more to do with replacing the filter than the fluid itself. The zf8hp fluid is green, not red and although BMW state it is a lifetime fluid I don’t believe they really care what happens to their cars above 100k, outside of the typical lease term for their cars.
    I replaced the fluid in my 2011 530d as zf recommend it should be done. I didn’t have access to the cars computers at the time so did it somewhat blind. I bought a genuine zf service kit for £160 from auto doc and I followed the instructions that came with the kit. I appreciate it wasn’t a full flush as you can’t drain the torque converter but it was still worth doing. The fluid came out a darker colour and the behaviour of the gearbox changed significantly after it was done.
    Im not sure Id trust any old garage to do it and to have it done at BMW would be quite costly as the service kits are £400 if you look around. Auto doc were especially cheap!
    When filling the gearbox back up you have to get it up to temperature so that its thermostat opens up and circulates around the radiator. This is important to do as if the stat is closed when topping up to full, when the stat opens the fluid level will rise to overfull.
    I would listen to the manufacturer of the gearbox over bmw when it comes to servicing

    Great topic and good points covered here dude! My previous E60 535d must have had a hard life because the torque converter had failed in it. I went with getting mine reconditioned and that went wrong within 3 months! Ended up getting a brand new one from ZF and it was good after that. Like you said it's mostly likely the previous owner driving it hard from cold and launching the car from stationary. I now have an E91 335d and opted to get the trans oil changed at the same time as a new metal sump and filter. An auto gearbox shop did a good job and highlighted that they had purchased a dedicated machine to fully pump the old oil out and new oil in. Agreed too on the mech sleeve, mine was deemed to be in good condition and was not replaced, probably due to being in the UK in a milder climate.

    Just recently experienced a "transmission malfunction" on a cold morning drive to work. It happened while it tried to change to 2nd gear. Came as an almost 1-2 slip
    I was told by many and agreed to change the oil and pan so I did with no change at all.
    After further research I'm sorta looking at the mechatronics sleeves as the problem but not entirely sure.
    Any ideas of what you guys think and do you recommend replacing the solenoid as well.

    I agree with you in many ways but I can not agree that you shouldn't change the oil in Europe type of climate as the oil has it's resources, but anyway... I don't know your case of driving but I have an E60 with a M57TU2 engine responding to 525d mode and it has a 264km relatively 164k miles on the clock (done by me as I got it new) and now its starting to have issues with it's torque where I am going to re-do the whole transmission just to be sure that there aren't going to be any issues for the next 100k km and I think I will do that right (obviously I am going to change the tran-y oil as well). Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't these cars transmission (zf6hp19/21/26) resources end up around 250-300k km where I mean tourque solenoids etc.?

    The train of thought is the fresh oil loosens all the accumulated crud in the gearbox which then causes issues - it's like using engine flush in a badly neglected engine - you run the risk of making things worse.
