      Jordan Sass had a Jetta 2.5 last year of true IRS, then the trailing arm was the next model rear suspension. That car had everything in exactly the right place. Couldn't afford the Wolfsburg edition but loved the car. Even though it was made in Mexico it was a great car as well. Good luck with the winter, doing the same in the north east states, lil snow is a blast a lot is a pain

    Just picked up a 2008 125i cabriolet manual with the N52 with 104,000 miles and it’s got an oil leak dripping oil near exhaust manifold, I’m going to order the replacement and new bolts this weekend. Paid £3400 for her and don’t mind paying to bring the engine and components as close to new as possible. I’ve had DSG golfs and stuff in the past and I really have a soft spot for the configuration of this little car N/A 6 cylinder, 6 speed manual, RWD, Coupe. this is now unheard of!

    Thanks for the video - useful information. I have changed everything you have identified except the disser valve. However I waited until I got codes or other faults. I only replaced one coil not the hole set. A new coil on one cylinder does not put extra load on old coils as they are completely independent of each other. The only additional item I had to replace was the starter motor. Sold the car with 320,000 kms. The new owner has the full history of the items replaced. PS - changing the water pump and thermostat requires the coolant to be replaced and should be the only time anyone needs to touch the coolant.

    Every point you made was what I call ENGINEERED FAILURE POINTS. They are specifically engineered to fail at a specific point to force the owner into the shop for a costly repair. Every auto manufacturer uses them to get into your wallet. All a part of the automotive corporate plan.

      Planned Obsolescence at its finest.

    • @chrissummers2689
      @chrissummers2689 Před 4 lety +3

      @@gtmike916 actually, to me, planned obsolescence is a separate concept; designing a vehicle to look outdated. It will run perfectly, but just look old, enticing the owner to "update" by buying the newest version. Engineered failure is used to force owners to repair items that should last longer if not fail at all. An example is the electric water pump on the BMW. Mechanical water pumps should last well beyond 100K, but you're living on borrowed time after only 50K with the BMW pump. Or the door latch mechanism in a Ford Edge. Some electronic gizmo fails to work after 15k, forcing you to pay well over $700 in labor to replace a $30 part.

      @gtjack9 Před 11 měsíci +3

      Planned obsolescence is a part that is designed in a way that it will no longer serve its purpose after a certain duration or determined wear quantity.
      Engineered failure points is not a thing, that’s called engineering for cost vs longevity.
      You could upgrade the material and design of every component on the car but there will always be a weakest link, the car would last longer overall but you will always get a part that will fail eventually, it is not only expensive to engineer parts for that, but also pointless if your top 60th percentile of vehicles doesn’t make it to the age at which these over engineered parts would last, they just become heavier landfill.

    Engine runs GREAT ! I had Mom appointment for her to look at a Subaru... They had sent it out for detailing and pulled the gold onto the screen. Mom said , " I want it, I'm tired of looking. For $11,000, Mom got the E60 N52 528i 2009 (or 08 * lol * ) - 88k miles - in May '22. I asked sales rep to pop hood after test ride (10 miles maybe) ( with a weird disturbance mid run). Residue all over, but not thick black... Just moistened , so I asked what was leaking... "Oh nothing, probably last guy to oil change spilled a little..." After home a month, total brake and rotors, then top front coolant hose connector (one of many things readily emitting residues). So then oil cooler filter housing gasket change and pulleys belt and tensioner, valve cover gasket.... But a vibrating was irritating to Mom ... I re-lubed/replaced caliper pins, no fix... Then recalled for pcv valve tube change... They told me needed rotors ... The ATE's I got for it weren't quality enough .... BMW's rotors next great, but pinhole steering fluid leak low pressure and old intake clamp inches from steering pump pulley made belt jump and shredded everywhere... ugh....a piece melting belt clabbered on the water pump bolts and melted up the rubber washers.... NEXT....

    This is all spot on. My 180K N52 (328i) has all of these except the vanos done. Most items got replaced at ~80K. But did my coils and second set of plugs about 170K. The valve cover had to be replaced because the CCV is built into it, at 175K. What a stupid design that is. At the current time I periodically get an oil burning smell, but no drips are visible on the car or the garage floor. Any ideas?

    Excellent information. I got 220,000 miles on my 08 528i and have already gone through the valve cover gasket, spark plugs. Football gasket, eccentric sensor, oil filter case gasket, expansion tank, battery and vanos solenoids. Im getting ready to order new vanos solenoids again 4 years later. The waterpump still has a strong jet of coolant at the expansion tank.
    Are the motor mounts a bad failing point for these cars?
    My 528i makes a sound right at the start only and dont know how to trouble shoot it. I know my sister is having her motor mounts on her 07 328i replaced due to a rear end collission. As soon as she got hit, her cars started vibrating like crazy. Just like I thought, it was the motor mounts.

    They could have put a temperature gauge on the cars. All they had to do was to design the gauge to read normal unless the temperature is out of tolerate according to water pump operation thermostat operation and the coolant temperature itself. All my cars the temperature gauge sits exactly in one spot no matter what. However outside of that parameter it will show a higher reading. You are right I was thinking since the electrical water pump and thermostat came on BMW's they took the coolant gauge off at the same time. So it makes sense.

    So when I get a used e91 wagon here shortly. Basically just replace all these things or should I risk it and run the car as is for a short time first?... And if needing to replace all these it wouldn't make sense to pay big dollar on the car just cause it has 70k or less on the clock. When could just pay a lot less for a car with 100k plus on the clock. And use part of the savings to do a bunch of this work yourself possibly. While getting to know the car more when working on it.

    Thats the noise of a direct fuel injection engine, sounds like a diesel truck. Normal. But if your fuel consumption is bad and you experience misfires, shudders and rough running then check your high pressure fuel pump, spark plugs and ignition coils

    With 302k miles my water pump went out, none of the rest of these things failed. Changed coils at around 180k because the boots were torn replacing plugs. As for the antifreeze drained it at 185k because if a deer hit and it was pure black. Might be scaring people away from decent cars.

    The best upgrade on my 2011 X3 with 100k somewhat problem free miles was trading it for a Lexus.... these 9 problems, and several other more was the final straw on a long list of things that cost way more than the car was worth to fix. I also have a 2013 328i F30, with 143k miles on the 4 banger...zero problems, but its not worth two dollars so I just tool around with it until the engine has a catastrophic failure....

      Interesting, yeah I have heard that the 328I F 30 is pretty reliable even though it’s forced induction, I am so torn because I love the Bangle era E 60 and I’ve always wanted one, was thinking about getting one as second car but I am also considering a A6 3.2 which is supposedly quite reliable actually. However I do love the F10 five series as well and a 528 I would probably be a reliable right, Of course with a thorough inspection and proper maintenance history
