Thanks for this, I started by assuming the valve itself was faulty and was going to get a replacement. Glad now that I decided to troubleshoot first and found this video!
Thought about doing the same, but that will just compound the issue of your filters clogging up and eventually your motor will burn to a crisp so not really a long term solution.

I just taped up the pressure relief on my old vax, seems to fix the problem. I wonder if the spring loses tension over time (or is designed to).

Not sure what you mean. Vacuums can lose suction for a few different reasons- I was pointing out what causes the valve to activate.
