War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition - gameplay video part 1 video 1

- War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition, by Matrix Games, is a painstakingly-researched, realistically-modeled turn-based war game based on (obviously) the Pacific theater during World War II that lets the player attempt to outdo Nimitz or Yamamoto's real-life strategies. I wanted to see some video of the game in action before I bought it, but couldn't find any. But if anyone else in the world wonders what this game is all about, I hope this video series fills the void.
As with many games in the genre, game mechanics are quite complex (and the UI doesn't make things any less intimidating), so I also make an effort in this series of videos to explain what different things mean in simple English and how to accomplish tasks that tripped me up when I started playing.
And yes, I did forget the all-important cup of water while speaking. Pardon the coughs. - Hry
Your tutorials - still being used in 2019. Thank you!
@Haydn Fan And during Covid-19
I came across this game the other day by mistake, and like you, only saw it through screen pictures. I am glad you have done this video to see the game better. Yes, I am one of those players who had all those games from the 70's and 80's and LOVED them. To me, everything looks good about this game. After seeing your video, believe me, I will purchase this one.
Thanks for doing this video. Just picked it up after seeing how awesome it looks. Your tutorials are very useful.
Best strategy game ever. Cant realy describe it any other way.
If you like depth this game is the one. As with anything that is thorough and well done it takes some time to learn it and get us to doing everything, but once you do you understand the epic greatness that it is.
its exspensive because it is a "boutique" game, no economy of scale.
Thanks for posting ... I'm highly interested in this game and your videos only make me more so.
Still love this game, and a great big thanks for the extra info!!
Is it possible to launch an attach on the Panama Canal? I've been looking for a game that takes into account this possibility. And what would also be really cool is if Chile and Argentina would allow basing rights to the Axis which would actually become important if the Panama Canal was taken offline for a year or more.
@TeianDown
You have any pointers for figuring this game out? I decided what the hell and picked it up (so expensive!).
It seems like I might like it, but the UI seems like it's from Windows 95, and there's so much to keep track of.
You ought to do a series like this on War in the East.
Very nice introduction. I am used to playing games like Panzer General and Strategic Command, but this game looks so complicated, the manual alone is over 300 pages! how does one learn this game? I have very limited strategy war game knowledge.
+1
But only for those, who have no trouble keeping zillon different things in a head at once. For others it turns out as a micromanagement nightmare. But few things compare to the feeling you get while seeing the invasion plan you set up for several months unfolding as planned and crushing your opponent. And yes, playing against human opponent is where this gem shines the most
Any clue whats the forum post was as of today? I wanna go see that stuff
Great overview!
You are very correct that this is very unique game and certainly not for everyone. Very much in the vein of the old Avalon Hill games (which I so dearly loved as a young lad but none of my friends could get into).
I believe the updated non-admiral edition is on sale on Steam this week for $30 (download only - no box). I will probably pick it up with the expectation I will probably never finish a game :)
Also have you thought of making a Lets Play series for this game if you have time?
I need to buy this!
I know this has been posted a year ago but, on what Forums did you find the person posting day by day? I would like to see that.
Looks like a great game
Nice :)
@0:18 ... I think more people are liking this game now ... over 95 thousand views!
Are you limited to historical planes and ships, or can you build stuff that never existed in real life? Also, are you given control of shipbuilding so that instead of constructing Yamatos (which rarely saw combat) you could put the resources into more carriers instead?
Does this game offer small scenario operations?
This game was a sequel to Uncommon Valor: Victory in the South Pacific which is actually a better game because it is so much smaller and only covers the south pacific.
They have done a game about the Russian Front. Next up is "War In The West" which is supposed to encompass the Europe/Mediterranean/Africa theaters.
Please, anyone knows what's the name of the main soundtrack song( the beautiful japanase themed pan-flute piece) ?
Adrian Barum yes it is called :
日本をテーマにしたパンフルートピース
(ggle translate it)
Hmm. I've been playing Hearts of Iron 3 lately. It's the closest I've come to wargaming, and it's made me curious about the genre. Since I don't know anyone who plays the board games, I'm limited to pc.This looks interesting, but also very complicated and, I imagine, hard to get into for a newb like myself.
Do you have any suggestions for games of this type that might be a little more accessible?
thebigJ1er No, he did not.
you talked about a 3rd video which was a 2nd turn playthru but after video 2 (4 parts) you seemed to skip to the tutorials - does that mean you never posted the 3rd part?
Is there anything like this for the European theater?
Can you zoom in on the map any? My eyes aren't too good and I can't read fine print.
Sadly, map zooming is not a feature supported by the game, though some of their later titles do offer it. Usability in general is kind of a mess, and accessibility concerns are completely absent. As far as I can tell, there is no option to resize or scale either UI elements or text.
Graphics (which include the map) can be replaced by modders, but I'm pretty sure their size has to match that of what they're replacing.
@idontknowwhatnicktou there are much smallers scn.s to start on like Battle of the Coral Sea, etc.
@TeianDown
That's too bad. Running through the Battle of the Atlantic in this sort of game would be fun. And would motivate me to learn more, since I'm more interested in that than the Pacific.
I've had WITP for months now, and I just can't seem to get into it. i spent days trying to learn when I got it, and I go back every so often, but it's not happening yet. The UI is so clumsy, and everything so obtuse. It feels like there's a wall between me and what's going on. Shame, game was expensive.
Late to the party, but "Grognard" is pronounced "Gro-knee-ar" (gro like grow but without the -w, in French, if the combination -gn if followed by a vowel then it is pronounced like "ni-" or knee if you want an English word closer to the pronunciation, -d is silent at the end)
@nitrile7 i did. but it's something you spend months playing 1 game unless you are unemployed. the biggest problem is the ai is so bad that 1 player gets old to fast. i was able to win as japan because the us ai would send carriers 1 at a time at my combined fleet.
wish i could appreciate it. but then what type of person would i be?
have you tried war in the east 1941 to 1945?
me too
whye there is no torrent for commander the great war?! i want to try game, cuz i can'[t find demo
The US torpedo rates are the historical failure rate
Can you do a Japanese gameplay
at the start of war we had shit planes yes our torp where bad to. after 1943 it turns to us
I like Panzer Strategy a lot more
Lol About your friend TeianDown. We are not all like that. I am a "Grognard", And I also enjoy lighter more action focused experiences like the Total War series also, And was seriously addicted to Company of Heroes for a couple years. I play FPS's and RPG's as well. As a "grognard" I am serious about my wargaming, yes, But only in the same sense that sim gamer's demand realism in their games. I don't see what is stopping your friend from playing other sorts of games though. That is kinda weird.
where can i buy it? its not on steam
edit: lol 75 euro... forget it
75 euro? Lol i could buy the whole europa universalis serie or a fresh triple-A game lmao.
Hey if anyone wants to discuss this game or the other Gary grigsby games my steam name is Dedmosh. I'd also love to talk to Teian bc I'm a beginner and the ability to get questions quickly answered instead of digging though the manuals would be unbelievably helpful!
is this game better than Hearts of Iron 3 ?
But anyway, It is good to see someone getting into a game like this, As I admit it is quite hefty. Looks to me like you may be a "Grognard" yourself if you keep this up, If you are not one already. What's the update man? It's been a couple months. Have you gone to the Grog-Side? :)
buyers beware no refund from matrix if your game didn't work
This games is more then playable, it is great.
I suggest you learn to read, then read the rules...
It will make much more understandable.
you own
90$ xD
Not only does it contradict the concept of satisfying a niche audience, but it's also a JOKE.
The research itself takes just about a SINGLE (two if you're generous) position over the entire course of the development cycle. I get that it's an increase of maybe even 10%, since this game was likely made by 10 people, but that's just another argument for the lack of value in comparison to mainstream games: there have been a LOT less working hours invested into the production of this game.
Maybe, MAY-BE they have to pay for licenses like RUSE for example (I never played it but I remember them having to shut down multiplayer, once licenses for WW2 vehicles ran out), but that's no different to mainstream games xD
only unemployed people could enjoy a game of this level of detail..... NOOOO ONE clocking in a 40 or 50 hour week could put up with this....well nothing slower than PTO 2 anyway
just get some friends and play axis & allies
this looks boring as shit, i saw the map and though of my geography classes in my mid teens, i was hoping there was at least 3d combat scneario after the ploting and stuff, still seems like a really detailed game that i dont have the time or mindset to apreciated anymore.
