- IT'S THE 13TH OF JULY, AND WE'RE ON THE TRAIL OF THE LIVERPOOL TO MANCHESTER RAILWAY, DISCOVER THAT WIGANS TWO STATIONS ARE VERY CLOSE TO EACH OTHER (AND WIGAN HAS A PIER TOO) BEFORE COMING BACK ROUND TO MANCHESTER AGAIN ...
BTW, TODAY IS "UPPER CASE TUESDAY!" - ALL COMMENTS (AND YOU ARE WELCOME TO MAKE THEM, BELOW) SHOULD BE MADE IN UPPER CASE. IF YOU'RE NOT HAPPY ABOUT THIS, OR ANY OTHER ASPECT OF THIS VIDEO THEN PLEASE write them in lower case so that they stand out, THANKS VERY MUCH!
ROUTE: EDGE HILL - MANCHESTER VICTORIA - WIGAN WALLGATE - WIGAN NORTH WESTERN - LIME STREET - WARRINGTON CENTRAL - URMSTON - MANCHESTER OXFORD ROAD
AS A GERMAN SPEAKER I LIKE UPPER CASE TUESDAY
JUST BECAUSE WE'VE BEEN DOING THAT IN OUR NOUNS
Mad seeing what looks like old Thameslink stock in Wigan..
We never get new trains, just southern hand-me-downs...
BRITAIN RUNS ON GIN
6:55 The look on the man in the background is priceless. He's probably thinking "Why on Earth would you even consider talking about liking pacers?"
VICKYS REACTION TO THE WINDMILL IS HILARIOUS!
FOUR VICTORIA STATIONS, YET NO GEOFF STATIONS :-(
If there is ever a King Geoff, maybe he'll get stations named after him ;-)
Well Manchester Geoff Station hasn't been built yet :/
Haha I get it
I'm renaming Wigan Wallgate to Wigan Geoffgate. 😂
"...calling at Manchester Oxford Road, Deansgate, Salford Crescent, Bolton, Wigan Geoffgate and Southport."
I agree with Antony, there's too many idiots on the road. If only we had more railways more of us could travel in safety and comfort!
WHAT A GREAT SERIES OF VIDEOS I DECIDED TO BINGE WATCH
MY FAVOURITE STATION NAME WAS OLDHAM MUMPS (sadly no more) AND THE RAILWAY BRIDGE WITH THE SLOGAN "SETON PRODUCTS LTD WELCOME YOU TO OLDHAM - THE HOME OF THE TUBULAR BANDAGE"
Bill Leach mumps still exists as a tram stop
I slightly remember going when I was 2. It was on a PACER!
I suspect you both have learned more than any commuter. Certainly more than I knew before, but you are both masterful teachers. Much love to you both!
Your speech about the Northern railway and pacers spot on. Now you just need to call them "Bus Trains" and you've nailed it!
I'M GLAD GEOFF IS FINALLY ADMITTING HIS SOUTHERN PRIVILEGE
HAHA, I APPRECIATE THE SECOND APPEARANCE OF URMSTON. I GUESS THERE'S TWO WAYS TO GET THERE AFTER ALL.
I would say that I feel sorry for you guys having to visit Wigan, but at least you got St Helens in there - its much nicer in St Helens.
At least St Helens still has a proper Marks and Spencer store!
I LOVE ALL THE STATIONS!!!! PERFECT WAY TO START THE DAY IN THE US OF A!!!
THANK YOU FOR UPLOADING THIS. GREAT VIDEO AS USUAL! I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT DAY! :D
IM GLAD YOU UPLOAD AT THIS TIME BECAUSE IT MEANS I GET TO WATCH THIS BEFORE I GO TO WORK!
THIS IS A GREAT VIDEO AND I REALLY LIKE THE PRESENTERS. IT IS GREAT THAT THEY HAVE RAISED ALL OF THE MONEY BY THEMSELVES THROUGH CROWD FUNDING INSTEAD OF BEING PRIVELIGED RICH KIDS. THEY HAVE A LARGE ENTHUSIASTIC FOLLOWING WHO REALLY LIKE WHAT THEY ARE DOING. THEY ARE EXCELLENT PRESENTERS WITH WARMTH AND CHARACTER. THE SERIES IS VERY ENJOYABLE. THEY DO NOT NEED TO BE KICKED UP THE ARSE. OR ABUSED WITH LOWER CASE COMMENTS.
GOEFF AND VICKI ARE ALSO VERY ENTERTAINING.
yes they are.
I would like to visit England and see the famous railway and historical sites so I am very excited to find your channel !
i'm addicted to these videos. i'd like to have seen more of Liverpool
I don't know why, but I'm soo happy you got of (ever so briefly) at Hindley. I did as well in April, when I noticed the train went in the wrong direction, and because I missed the train in the other direction by mere seconds, I had a drink at the local pub next to the station. Nice people!
Nice to see my hometown St Helens on here!
I grew up in Urmston! Nice to see it represented! These past few videos are kind of making me miss the north west.
Interesting note about St Helens Central station. When you're leaving towards Liverpool, the track has an abandoned route that cuts left and used to link up with St Helens Junction. The track for this (as well as the public gateways across said track) are still very much there, meaning you can get some great photos.
EVERY DAY THAT BEGINS WITH AN ALL THE STATIONS VIDEO IS A GREAT DAY.
GEOFF, ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO! However... although I don't want to emulate A CERTAIN PERSON too closely, I _should_ point out that Mr Huskisson was killed at Parkside station (now closed) on the opening day of the L&M, not at the Rainhill Trials. And the first fatal railway accident in England was in 1815 in Philadelphia, County Durham. BUT I'M LIKE THAT.
Those that are interested may like to know; there is a class 156 named "Rt. Hon. William Huskisson MP." and that unit formed the first stopping service at the newly reopened Ilkeston station.
Huskisson was the first passenger railway fatality.
Oooooo Vicki... SCORE! Terrific shot off Wigan Pier and the longboat manoeuvre. 😃👍
As a northern rail user I can verify that pacers are the best, especially the ones with benches rather than individual seats. The openness and bumpiness of the trains are so weirdly charming and I'm going to be so devastated once they're all replaced
YOU'RE DOING GREAT GUYS, KEEP GOING...
The pub on Urmston station - 'The Steamhouse' is a fantastic pub and well worth a visit. Shame you didn't show any footage of the place and showed the character of the place and the conversion photos.
Great thing about Irlam station- They have a little Peckett loco and wagon display in the car park
Great project really enjoy your videos.
ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
8:40 Reminds me of the time to walk between Newhaven Marine and Newhaven Harbour ;)
Another great video, thanks.
Guys, you should've made an extra about the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway and about the Leigh-Salford-Manchaster Bus Rapid Transit (also a guided busway). These things are quite uncommon, and the one in Cambridgeshire is also the longest in the world.
Seeing the train pulling out of Liverpool Lime Street brings back memories.
I'M AFRAID GEOFF FELL INTO THE PITFALL OF PRONOUNCING THE SECOND "K" IN "KIRKBY". IT'S ACTUALLY PRONOUNCED THE SAME AS "KIRBY", AS IN "WEST KIRBY".
Indeed!
the name makes me think of Kirby, the round pink ball from the games of the same name, that's how I remeber how to pronounce Kirkby
IT’S THE SAME AS A LOT OF NAMES THAT INCLUDE “KIRK” (CHURCH) - MANY TOWNS HAVE A “KIRKGATE” AND IT’S ALMOST ALWAYS (COVERING MYSELF FOR ANY SMARTARSES)!) PRONOUNCED “KURGATE”.
SAME WITH KIRKBYMOORSIDE NEAR ME - THE SECOND K IS SILENT.
edited posting to make it Upper Case Tuesday compliant :-)
Scott McGinn 😂😂
@@herschell64 or keerby as scousers pronounce it.
WITH THE TRAINS FROM MANCHESTER TO KIRKBY BEING SO INFREQUENT, SOMETIMES PICCADILLY-LIVERPOOL SOUTH PARKWAY-LIVERPOOL CENTRAL-KIRKBY CAN BE QUICKER
Love the music!
Bit of a tip - if you want a quieter carriage on the electric trains between Liverpool -Manchester/Preston/Wigan - use the rear or front carriages as the motors as probably noted are very noisey.
IS 7 AM YOU NEW UPLOAD TIME? I LIKE THIS.... I GET TO WATCH IT BEFORE SCHOOL.
charlie moir SAME ITS BETTER ISNT IT
I KNOW RIGHT NOW I HAVE AN EXCUSE TO STAY UP PAST 11PM WHERE I LIVE!
I finish school already
Chassen Road is the Road I grew up on. Used that station quite a lot and Urmston.
As you were at Huyton station, I thought you would have shown the short distance between Huyton station and Roby station.
DESPITE BEING A GAY MALE, IM DEVELOPING A LITTLE CRUSH ON VICKY. SORRY GEOFF! 😬
Gareth Jones HEART. BROKEN. 😟
YOU HAVE SIX LIKES ON THAT COMMENT SO I'M ASSUMING YOU AREN'T THE ONLY ONE
Definitely not the only one, I too am gay and falling more in love with Vicky by the day... nobody tell my Fiancé!
Dylan Conroy Ermmm... Okay? I'm terribly sorry that we seem to have offended you by saying something that had absolutely zero impact whatsoever on your life.
I do believe we were saying exactly what we were thinking and hoping to show our support for Geoff and Vicki and perhaps brighten other people's days with a light-hearted comment about how, being individuals who are generally attracted to those of the same gender find ourselves falling every so slightly in love with Vicki and her sense of wonder, humour and excitability. In other words, we were having a bit of a laugh.
If you have a problem with that, that's your problem and nobody else's. There's no need to be rude about a little harmless fun.
How could anyone not develop a crush on Vicki? She's the cutest little goofball I've ever seen! If she were a train, she'd be the Class 139 running from Stourbridge Junction to Stourbridge Town!
VERY NICE VIDEO AS USUAL
NEW FUNKY MIX. I LOVE IT.
Missed most of the stations on that line
Oh, ffs...not AGAIN........?!!!!
Warrington Central my local station. Least used around here has to be Sankey for Penketh but it is closing to be replaced
The world’s first team sport ‘derby’ was held between Wigan and St. Helens!
Excellent viewing as usual. :)
its so weird seeing places i know on youtube XD especially Hag fold , which is currently my nearest station! and also around Wigan! It made me wish the Tyldesley loop line was still in place so you could have come through my town xD I could have given you a lift from one station to another on the historic Bolton & Leigh railway... which dosent exist anymore either :/ and i cant drive anyway XD oh well. Continue on your amazing journey, warriors of public transport! :)
Sad to say, that since your visit, the sculpture at the Pier has been vandalised - he's lost his cap and scalp
SO LONG AS YOU ARE NOT OPERATING THE TRAIN , THE ODD PINT CAN'T DO ANY HARM. I DO LOVE HOW YOU CALL THIS A JOB THOUGH
Manchester needs Piccadilly station taking out of commission, except the two through platforms. Victoria needs to be made into a proper mega _through_ station like in Berlin, having all connections at one point. Piccadilly faces the wrong way. Having two terminal stations in inland cities is ludicrous - they are a left over from the Victorian era. Terminal stations are very inefficient.
You are 30 years too late there as you should have told that to British Rail then and they wouldn't have downgraded Victoria station and built that Arena there.
THAT WAS A GOOD VIDEO!
AH.. PACERS LIKE THAT REMIND ME OF BEING A STUDENT IN SHEFFIELD IN THE 1980S AND TRAVELLING OVER THE THE MANCHESTER AREA TO WATCH FOOTBALL AND VISIT MY SISTER. i LOVE HOW THE SEATS SEEM TO BE BOLTED ONTO THE FLOORS AS OPTIONAL EXTRAS, AS AN AFTERTHOUGHT.. AND HOW THEY HAVN'T CHANGED IN 30 YEARS
Yeah, I live by wigan and it's a bit of a local inside joke how close the stations are together
I DON'T KNOW WHY IT'S UPPER CASE TUESDAY BUT I LIKE IT SO I'M JOINING IN TOO.
The oldest railway station could be a point of contention. On the first day the trains came from Crown St into Edge Hill before Broad Green. However, Edge Hill was relocated in 1836 while Broad Green is still in it's original 1830 location so some could argue that the current Edge Hill isn't the original and therefore Broad Green is the earliest.
you are correct about Broadgreen but sadly it doesn't retain the 1836 looks of Edge Hill. whilst it sits on it's original site it is modern bus shelter style, so give it a miss.
GREAT! WAS AT RAINHILL 1980!
THIS WAS VERY WELL DONE YET AGAIN ALSO YOUR LEVEL 99 SAVAGERY WITH UPPERCASE TUESDAY IS NOTED AND HILARIOUS YOU BANTERSAROUSES YOU
HOWEVER
Geoff have you not read Harry Potter? Seriously?
Although not the original buildings the oldest operational station is Broad green (15 sept 1830)
Adore the mini nuggets of information we get!
THIS IS A GOOD VIDEO AND I ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH THANK YOU BYE BYE
YET ANOTHER MARVELLOUS VIDEO.
i TOO, EVEN AS A HAPPILY MARRIED MAN, HAVE DEVELOPED A SLIGHT CRUSH ON VICKY. YOU'RE A LUCKY MAN GEOFF.
HOWEVER, I AM DISAPPOINTED VICKY SEEMINGLY HADN'T PREVIOUSLY HEARD OF WIGAN PIER. IT'S FAMOUS, AND GEORGE ORWELL INCORPORATED IT INTO THE TITLE OF ONE OF HIS BOOKS.
KEEP UP THE VERY GOOD WORK. YOUR VIDEOS ARE MAKING MY SUMMER EVEN MORE ENJOYABLE.
SPEAKING OF PIERS, WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO DO RYDE PIER HEAD?
One correction. William Huskisson wasn't killed at Rainhill, or at the trials. He was killed on the opening day at Parkside, just east of Newton-le-Willows station. Half way between Liverpool and Manchester, where locos stopped to take on water.
WIGAN RUNS ON PIES
I hope you got to peek into MOSI, it's fab.
I JUST MISSED YOU BY HALF AN HOUR AS I WAS IN LIME STREET AT 3:00 AND YOU WERE THERE ABOUT 40 MINUTES EARLIER.
Wigan Pier is not the pub and the landing stage outside, its on the opposite canal bank a little further down.
"I'M DOING HARRY POTTER JUST TO EXCITE YOU." - #THINGSGEOFFSAYS
There's a fanfiction joke here somewhere that I shan't bother trying to discover.
Rule 34 and Tumblr are on fire right now. XD
BRITAIN RUNS ON RAILS
DRINKING ON THE JOB? SHOUTY MAN'S GOING TO BE FURIOUS!
THEY SHOULDVE HAD A DRINK AND SHOWN IT ON CAMERA JUST TO RUB IT IN FOR SHOUTY MAN.
Yep, been to Wigan Pier.
My local adopted station is Atherton as I live in the largest town in the North West without a train station since 1969
I agree, the roads are full of idiots, could be a new slogon for the railway advertisment.
the wigan prier does not exist :DDDDD I ❤ Eric Blair's work
well.. exists, but it isn't an actual prier...
NEXT YEARS SERIES SHOULD BE ALL THE GIN DISTILLERIES
The train to Wigan pier
Do all the bus stops!!!
Liverpool is my fave British city
Talking of lovely station pubs in the Manchester area, the Stalybridge Station Buffet is a must visit! Great beer, lots of railway related nicnacs and pies!
I draw the line at taking a journey on a Pacer.
At 1:09 is the best station on the route as I have family living there.
PACERS - THE MARMITE OF BRITISH TRAINS (LOVE THEM OR HATE THEM)
I'm the opposite, hate marmite, love Pacers
hate them or really hate them, surely?
i went on a Kittywake canal cruise once
also there is a plaque on Warrington Bank Quay station commemorating Paul Simon's "Homeward Bound" written at the station by the man himself
I thought that was Widnes Station?
No that's Widnes!
VICKY knows whats she's talking About Love To The PACERS ❤❤
The guy in the background at 6:57 is funny to Geoff's comment about Pacers
I love you so much
Were did you get the teashert from
It would have been nice to end the video showing Manchester Liverpool Road as a reminder of the origins of rail travel and then show the Ordsall Chord bridge which is the future of trains in Manchester.
06:52 That guys look when Vicki asks Geoff if he likes pacers.
THE PACERS ARE MY TRAINS AND I ONLY GET ONE TRAIN EACH WAY AN HOUR AND I HATE WHEN I DON'T GET PACERS!
Aww, you didn't show the Nine Arches Viaduct. Also, the accident with William Huskisson happened near Newton-le-Willows, not Rainhill.
"ANYWAY, WE AWAIT OUR TRAIN..." - NEW TAGLINE?
The reason he made all the papers, was not just cos he was the first rail passenger fatality, he was an MP for Liverpool - a certain William Huskisson esq
Was the first death not at Eccles station? I think there is a plaque there. A politician. Even Geoff won't sit facing the other passengers on the Pacer.
Anthony told me off when I was younger for kicking a football over his fence!
