I was on that train you caught from Ardwick. In all the years I've been on it, you were the first ever to board in the direction of Manchester!

Vicki's reaction at 7:50 - priceless! That's what the views of the Peak District does to you! :-)
Must say they've could have filmed more at Edale - the start of the Pennine Way and mention the Kinder Trespass which led to the movement of establishing National Parks in the UK, and the Peak District being the first (and best) one :-)

Just to say that greater Manchester ends after Middlewood, at which point you go to Cheshire through Disley, and get to Derbyshire just before New Mills station.

So much to' enjoy. Ardwick; countless times I've been past on the train, never seen anyone get on. And that line to Buxton; did it back in the 1980's with a chum, on a day of such deep snow that people were going up from Manchester to Buxton to ski. Train rammed with skiers. St Anne's Wells, wherever they occur, are usually for helping people with eye problems. Sigh. ADORABLE! Onwards!

Historically (before 1974), New Mills was on the boundary between Derbyshire and Cheshire (the River Goyt), so _all_ of New Mills wasn't in Derbyshire before that date. It's true that it's never been part of Greater Manchester, though.

    • @carriageofnoreturn.1881
      @carriageofnoreturn.1881 Před 7 lety +4

Hello Tevildo - that's indeed true, though only the civil parish boundary was changed in 1974, not the ecclesiastical parish boundary - so people who live over the river are still considered to be Cheshireites for the purposes of getting married at the Parish Church, such are the joys of straddling a border! It also means that trains in New Mills are that bit more expensive when going in to Manchester - and why I sometimes drive to Marple to catch the train from there.

Locals do not fill up waterbottles as the water out the tap in buxton comes from the spring , in fact the water in buxton water bottles travels 2 miles out side of town in a pipe to the bottling plant

4'16" "People are just walking past, why aren't they just filling up their water bottles?"
    It's because they live there.
Oh btw it's not spring water, it's natural mineral water, and there are laws protecting natural mineral water, whereas spring water can just come out of the tap. Check the label when you buy a bottle, NMW has to have a chemical analysis of the composition.
The water coming out of the well is hydrothermal and has been percolating through the local schism in the rocks for 5000 years.
It comes out at a constant temperature of 27 degrees Celsius, regardless of the time of year.
The owners of Buxton Mineral Water, the Coca-Cola company, would love to shut down that well, but they aren't allowed to, so anyone can fill as many bottles as they like from there for free.
    Beautiful video, love the channel.

i was brought up on the station house on the station platform. My mum lived there for 40 years, rented of british rail i spent many happy days playing trains with all the station signal footplate staff .i still think the station is the quantest station in derbyshire.xxxxx
About running trains on the monsal trail. When peak rail was in buxton in the eightys thay tried to open the line to matlock from buxton but br and derbyshire council wouldnt let them .
thay got driven off the sight because buxton water wanted the grounds so we got lorries instead of trains (so so wrong grrr)
just emagine catching a steam train to matlock from buxton i still hope it happens.

Why the Pride & Prejudice reference at the beginning? (0:05)
    a) Because you filmed it 1 day after the 200yr anniversary of Jane Austen's death (0:04).
    b) Because the line into Disley (2:53) passes through Lyme Park where Colin Firth filmed P&P.
    c) The 5th Duke of Devonshire (4:38) lived at Chatsworth, reputedly the model for Pemberley.
    d) Some other reason...?
