Behringer Dynamic Microphone (SL 85S) Review / Test (Compared to XM8500, BA85A, SM58)

- Today I review a $20 budget handheld dynamic microphone from Behringer, the SL85S. This microphone is built well, it’s affordable, and comes with a nice case. For many use cases, it’s tolerable, but definitely not my first choice. I would most likely go for the XM8500 or BA85A from Behringer instead.

The best budget $700 microphone I've ever heard 😍
That's the first thing I noticed too XD
700 is a budget mic what is this year 3000 ad
It's the price for a set of 35 Microphones 😉
Lol 1st thing here as well
Between the Behringer, the Behringer, and the Behringer, I think I liked the Behringer.
Here's how the mic sounds with my hat off...
Now here's how the mic sounds with my hat on...
"~$700 at the time of review" mmmm yes $20
DAMN IT! Did I forget to update the price!? EFF!
@@Podcastage Oh well, people make mistakes.
@@Podcastage Leave it in for a laugh :)
That's the first thing I noticed too XD
This is a $700 mic. And you should leave the price like that. So everybody can smile. We need some loughs at this tough times.
I didn't hate the sound of this microphone, but the XM8500 still sounds best to me of the group, but I wouldn't be mad at all to own the SM48. Great review and advice.
oh, the instrumental part of the test was way better than i expected
I was listening to a podcast about Linux, and the host said he was going to put info in the doobleydoo below. Nice job. You've had an impact on language.
doobleydoo was started by somebody else
When you have the chance please test the "t.bone" range from Thomann. I heard they are really good for the (cheap) price and would love to see them go through your batch of tests/comparisons! Keep up the good work! 😉👍
XM8500 sounded best!
Please compare Behringer XM8500 with Samson Q7. which one better for vocal recording
I don't even have any interest in the mic, I just like the videos and my kids love the songs.
Hi mum!
This order :
Sm58
Sm48
XM8500
Although XM8500 sounded more pleasant, warmer to my ears (out of the inexpensive bunch), I could see people picking up this SL 85S mic if they don't have instant on/off/mute switch on their audio interface, so like if you're streaming, or making live podcasts, or anything like that, you could cut off the sound instantly if you needed.
Overall, as per usual, big thanks for the review!
Hi Bandrew, great review video. I think for cheap, I'd get the Behringer XM8500. I like the sound of it on your voice and if I could spend $40 I would get two of them (one spare)...
i think you should do a re-review of the behringer xm 8500 since the video you did of it used a xlr to 3.5 mm jack ( i know that it's dynamic and therefor it's easyer to use that and still get good audio) but also because the why you review today is much more "infoming" and gives greater point of view on the thing you review....
keep op the good work and great video
the sound is actually quite spot on to the original 58, with the sm58 have a tad more clarity to it. as a singer i actually prefer xm8500 for the boomier tone it have.
Behringer is just cannibalizing their own sales by putting out so many similar mics
Really they should just build a broadcast-style dynamic and call it the MS-b7
M7-BS lol
I’d try it for shure 😂
They have the MB7 Beta but only EU yet
You're not wrong. Having more than one mic in the same niche just muddies their own sales a bit. It's additional cost that isn't going to yield additional gains.
B7MS
Really helpful video
Thank you for the kind words. I'm thrilled the video was helpful.
Hi your review are amazing! Can i know what audio software you use to record your voice? Thanks!
Behringer XM8500 is a good contender for the SM48 and SM58, but every other mic (including the SL 85S) just sounds cheap and nasally to me lol. Great review!
Ben please do a video on versus series of condenser microphones under $300
I really liked the distorted guitar tone and I'm a guitarist too so.
Pretty objectively good for that for sure.
Doesn't sounds bad, I like it, but that noise rejection is terrible. I still think the XM 8500 is the best one. SM58 is the best if you don't mind the price.
Highly advise looking at the se v7 if you are looking at the sm58 :)
"SM58 is the best if you don't mind the price" haha oh dear. Do you even know where you are right now
distortingjack in his defense i think he tried to recommend one mic from the line up presented in the video so can’t really fault him too much my guy
@@skmkenny5148 Love the sE V7, plus they have great customer service.
Super interesting demo. I really didn’t like the Behringer SL85s on voice. But for a cheap dynamic, I thought it worked really well on the acoustic guitar. Surprisingly well. Like maybe better than a 57. Go figure.
Please do a review on *Warm Audio WA 47jr* microphone. 🙏🙏🙏
Wow, decently cheap. Also, I have been liking the intros.
I don't think I've heard worse plosives or desk/arm banging than this. But sound wise it was my 2nd favorite right after the SM58. The Pyle deserves its name, I didn't know microphones could sound that bad.
In a vacuum for $10 I was surprised it worked. Then when it leaves the vacuum and has to compete with other affordable options.....just awful. So much top end that it's piercing.
hey Bandrew, just a suggestion..you could also review those popular live wireless microphones by sennheiser, shure etc. it would be interesting to see your thoughts on those kind of mics..
can you recomended me the budget mic which is good for acoustic guitar? please.
Great review. Thanks. Just as an aside, I see Boya has now upgraded their BY-MM1 to the BY-MM1+. Could you perhaps do a revisit and compare again to the Rode? Thanks.
What's your opinion on goXLR for music recording? I recently bought one that's on the way and I know it's useful for gaming/streaming, but how well does it do for recording music?
I'm using a Rode NT1 microphone with shock mount on
Podcastage, for a good sounding budget dynamic take a listen to an Audix f50. $49 and it sounds really good!
I like how your acoustic sounds through any of the shitty mics you review. It's a great sounding guitar, what one is it? I guess the treated room helps a lot though as well.
Most of the stuff I've watched of yours is older, but I'm loving these more in depth recent reviews!
$700?? Love you and the review anyway💖
Me: Mom can we have the SM58?
Mom: We already have the SM58
SM58 at home
Blue yeti x vs Samson g track pro or this with an m audio 192/4 with a cable..what would you choose if you are getting started and don't plan to upgrade for a good while.
Can you do a review on the sudotack st900, please!!? I really need to know if it is a good microphone for my videos!!
Shure sm48 takes my vote in this round.
Made in China seems obvious for the price, but I appreciate it nonetheless. Always nice to see that sort of manufacturer information in reviews.
hey Podcastage, nice review of that cheap behringer microphone (even tho it doesn't look like a good choice, at least it's my personnal thought)
i would really like if you did a special video about the best microphone for BEATBOX ! that would be fun to record and would help quite a lot of people.
I do not beat box so I can't speak on that topic.
@@Podcastage but do you have any recommandations ?
Hi ,please make vedio in 2021 do you think Q2u still good to use in streaming or you have more good option i care for voice quality you can offer until 200$
Pyle I liked the least. SM58 I liked best in this review. XM8500 is second. SM48 is what I'd probably pick for my own voice.
Why do i watch every video of this channel, and am i subscribed?
Bcz i am an audio enthusiast, i and enjoy very much seing bandrew testing all these microphones.
Every single detail that we have to know about the microphone is covered on the videos, leaving no space for doubt.
I love how he came up with new lyrics for the songs on every video, and my favourite non audio part is definetely "The box throwing".
Bandrew, sincerely thanks for these amazing videos. Greatings from Planet Earth, Africa, Angola.
Hi, iam Soumith from India, I am struggling to know about AKG C314 multi pattern condenser microphone and is it better than rode or not so please unbox it and compare with rode nt1.
Whats the best mic thats like $50 below? My mic got stolen by someone who came over my house so now I gotta buy another damn mic ffs. I had the at2020 but I'm not even trying to spend 120 again or however much it costs now.
It sounds exactly like the Shure SM48!
Shure SM58 - the best! Bought used for 45€. Just changed a grill because of corrosion on outside.
And that will last you for 50 more years. One of the best ways to spend $50.
Bro, would you be open to the idea of testing out the Beyer dynamic TG v35 s?
I wonder what behringer mic would be the best for metal vocals and metal guitar
We want the SL 75c Review (the sm57 version from beringher)
Is the grille on this interchangeable with the XM8500 or the SM58? (I don’t like the black grille of the XM8500 and can’t find replacements.) If it is, I’d buy this just for the grille and the case.
Can you please review Maono USB Condenser mic kit ? I can't tell the model because there are different names for similar looking products.
Listen can you do a side to side reviw between the akg p120 and behringer b2 pro. Both better then the behringr c3. So i think it would be a good comparison as they in similar price range to. Im also wanting either or both of the mics. Mainly for music. And bit of podcast stuff. get onto it bro. Im sure your viewers would like to know to. Anyway. Your reviews are bangin. keep it up bro. My g👊
I got this mic for 20 euros and a UM2 for 44 , I had a snowball for years , the snowball did fine for me but I wanted to try something new ,it's warmer , more detailed , clearer , and so much fun to play around with in post . But to get the best sound out of it you really need to be on top of it and use a windscreen (without a windscreen you'll need to have the best mic technique in the world to avoid plosives from a very short distance) , so it gets disgusting if other people record with you too because the windscreen will be full of spit etc. in no time , so I guess buy a pack of windscreens, swap them around and wash them afterwards.
I have a question podcastage. Can i use my xm8500 directly to a xlr to 3.5mm if not can i use it with my phantom power? If not and still requires a audio interface i have a v8 soundcard which sucks because there’s a lot of hiss. But would that work? I cant afford a mic pre amp. Can i do a plug and play?
It would work with 3.5mm cable but you have to boost the sound alot which will make it sound bad
You can also use xlr to usb cable which is a bit decent but other suggest audio interface
I preferred the Behringer, but the Behringer wasn't bad. Although I'm sure some users would like the Behringer more.
Couldn't agree more. I thought the Behringer did really well, but not as well as Behringer. How did you feel about the Behringer, though?
@@SonjaAgataBiscan 😂🤣😂
As for me, I liked sl85s more than sm58, at least that what I heard in beyerdynamic dt 770
Pyle PDMIC58 surprisingly good
Maybe it's because I've got a severe case of Keto flu, but I liked this mic on everything.
Can you review the Behringer SL75C next please?! It's their 57 clone!
sounds like something is loose, vibrating...i would check to see if everything is screwed tight
Podcastage please review the slate ml1.
I just finished editing my review of this mic 😂
HAHA! Can't wait to see your review of it!
I wanna be a mic reviewer too!! Can you guys loan me some mics??
Would you recommend for a talkback mic?
I’m sorry to comment here but i really like to ask for your advice. and I really hope you see this comment. I purchased my first microphone because of your review years ago. It’s a rode m3. And now I am looking at buying my second microphone. I’m looking at a standard microphone that is kind of does it all where I can record vocals, acoustic Guitar, Electric guitar and drums (Snare drum). I am looking at getting a second Rode M3 or maybe try a Shure Sm57 but I just can’t pull the trigger yet of which one I’d choose. I really hope you can give me some thoughts and advice please. And thank you so much and more power to you.
Hey, I know it's maybe weird but we have this big online music store in Europe called Thomann and they have their own line of mics. I have a cheap MB-85Beta from them which actually sounds better than the mic it's imitating for 1/3 of the price. Could you maybe review some of those?
I have kind of a strange question and maybe someone will be able to point me in the right direction. What is the best gear to record a very loud sound in a very windy environment ? I am trying to record my motorcycle engine while riding it, and it's been a nightmare. The best solution I have found so far was to use a 30$ dynamic mic, plugged to a seramonic smartrig II that is plugged to my phone (for recording). I use foam to cover the mic because of wind noise and I point the back of the mic against the wind (it seems to help reduce wind noise ). But the result is not very good yet. I notice that different phone (using the same recording software) produce different results, in some cases I get lots of noise, in others the mic cannot pic a very loud sound from the exhaust. Do I need to get a nice recorder for this? Like a zoom h4 or h5? Sound recording is new to me and I am completely overwhelmed with all the cable types, mics, preamps, etc...
If someone could share some light at the end of the tunnel I would be eternally greatfull :)
Oh man , fellow motorcyclist here , a good recorder will help you , Tascam DR-05X is my recommendation to you , a motorcycle channel on CZcams uses it to record their videos and they sound pretty solid(the channel has over 1 million subs) , now for microphone , I think I'd go for a lavalier mic , they are tiny in size , this will help you set it up somewhere, maybe somewhere near the rear suspension and behind your leg , the microphone I would recommend is the Purple Panda Lavalier Microphone Kit it goes for like 20 dollars , and it has a massive windscreen in the kit which may work well in higher speeds. Also a helpful thing you can do is record on very low volume , because if the sound source gets really loud , microphones hate that , and it can cause clipping , so when recording have the volume for the microphone low , and you can use boost the audio later on your computer , it's very easy to do with a program like Audacity , and you won't lose any mic quality , Idk if it'll work but you can use these parts and try to experiment with some positions , I hope it works !
I actually found a PDMIK1 clone not too long ago: the Dolphin Audio MC-3. Maybe time for another Versus series?
I prefered the XM8500 and the SM58, not sure between the two though
Hy which one should I buy
Shure sm58, or mxl770
As a beginner please suggest
My room is also not acoustic treated
Among those two, in a not treated room, the dynamic microphone.
@@swschilke thanks 😀
Review the Superlux TM58 please!
I asked the same. I actually like that mic
Can you review beyerdynamic tg v35ds, please?
this has probably been answered but what boom mic are you using?
I’m not using any boom mic.
I was going to say not bad for $20 until the boom arm test.
very affordable ~700$ at the time of this review
Please review the maono au-a04
Agree that it sounded good on electric guitar, sucked on acoustic. It seemed like if you didn't touch the microphone or use plosives, it was ok. But that's not realistic. The others that jumped out as better were the SM58, of course, but also the XM8500. But really, if I've only got 20 bucks for a vocal mic, I'm gonna steal the SM 58, or buy one of the other similarly priced microphones used in the video.
3:55 no bueno jeje, saludos desde Colombia
it does NOT sound bad!
Which other mic is better than this one? Want to know, it was the black one, couldn't tell.
You forgot to put the timestamps in and you also forgot to update the price.
And don't forget the Beanie
How the heck can they get away with this, the low price, with such good quality. Its a no brainer, even for laughs everyone will get one... I will someday soon. I've owned Behringer XM8500 for over 15 years, still works I'm sure. But I will get at least one of the new kids on the block.SL85S
I don't know how they make them so cheap. Would be interested to see their factories and the labor conditions as well as the materials, and R&D they do. Don't think we'll get that ever though.
My soul was screeching when he was holding the mic from the grill.
please review Zoom ZDM-1
I preordered it. As soon as it's out I'll review it.
On/Off switch is almost always a deal breaker for me. F
Jellyra I think it has a lock on so you can’t accidentally turn it off, just need a little screwdriver to flip the lock plate.
Bueno micrófono 💯💯💯👍👍👍👍
So I Was Searching On Why Is There A Rubber Band Around The 🎤 And Nothing Do You Know Why There Is A Rubber Band In The Middle Of Dynamic Mics?
Hi, i appreciate your work.
I'm a small streamer but i have a really bad microphone, so my streams aren't much enjoyable. (I stream videogames)
Could you recommend me some microphone under 60€? (Both dynamic and condenser, NO xlr)
I come from Italy, i will buy from amazon.it
Thanks in advance
It's a Pyle of Behringers.
They Pyle sounded close to the SM58.
Is the 8500 discontinued or just hard to get because of the pandemic like a lot of things?
Love the channel and your videos btw. I should’ve started with that. Great stuff!
Just hard to get b/c plague.
Okay cool. I was concerned because I saw it go on sale and then it seemed to become hard to get so I grabbed one from Full Compass (I was planning on picking one up anyway and they were the only ones I found that had them in stock)
LOL. $700 dollars at the time of the review. I do that all the time. Missed title edit.
Review SL75c behringer
Review Neumann m149
Thank you for the video! I saw a video showing a supercardioid painted on the box of the Behringer XM8500 microphone. Can you please tell the Behringer XM8500 microphone cardioid or supercardioid?
Can't hear a difference w the SM48 and the SL 85S.
I saw something...
no stickers!?!!!??? 😟
I’m not shure which Behringer I prefer :D
