    I just want to say how much I appreciate this video. So many 'how to' videos are made by people who really just want to star in their own show and lose focus on what's important. This video has all the facts you need, is clear and well made - really helpful. Thanks

    Thanks for the valuable information. One piece of added advice would be to use a drop of thread locker on the locknut when reassembling. (one of the most common parts that go missing)

      That is really good advice. Thank you!

    Excellent video on the iconic Suntour barcons! I found this when searching for the differences between these and Shimano from the same period. Understanding the ratcheting wheel and specs for replacement parts is valuable knowledge.

    Thank you for sharing this wonderful information with us.
    Can you tell me what the O.D. is, of the part that inserts into the bar end, so I can make sure to have bars with an adequate I.D., in order to receive the shifter.

      @operabike  Před 3 lety +1

      Hello Gary and thanks for the comment. The O.D. of the expansion clamp is roughly 18.6mm with the clamp fully loosened. I mentioned around the 1:00 minute mark in the video that these shifters would fit handlebar I.D.s between 19mm and 24mm. You want to make sure you have a minimum of 35mm or so of straight handlebar tube to insert these into. I don't think road bike handlebar I.D.s have changed much over the years. My nearly 50 year old handlebars have an I.D. of 20mm and my current 3T Ergonova Pro handlebars are 21mm I.D. Hope this helps.

      @@operabike Yes! This helps a bunch. I am looking forward to taking my shifters apart, and servicing them, with the help of your video. I will make sure to have just the right preferred tools, and the proper setting. Thanks again, for your great tutorial, and also, your response.

    Thanks for the video, very helpful. I am missing the locknut and when I installed them the levers did not hold, they slipped back down. Is this because I am missing the locknut? Is there some other reason for them not holding firm. I ended up breaking the lever axle because I was over tightening to get the lever to hold. Damn. Not an easy part to find. Thanks for your measurements it will make finding a reasonable facsimile easier

      Hi Elizabeth. Sorry these aren't working for you. The outer locknut does not set the friction level of the shifter so if its missing it will still work. I am missing one of mine and the shifter works fine, but it requires me to tighten the lever axle every so often to keep it from slipping which is annoying. If all the parts are in the right order then tightening it (doesn't take much) after its assembled is all that is required. It sounds like a bushing or spacer is missing (?) which would prevent the lever axle from compressing everything together providing the friction needed. Check the Sun Tour parts diagram at the end of the video and compare it to what you have. Also, there are quite a few shifters and parts of shifters for sale on ebay in case you need some like the lever axle. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

      @@operabike Thanks for that. I was able to replace the broken axle with a stainless bolt of the same thread -(phew!!!). It now functions fine and have my old Tommasini road bike back functioning again with bar end shifters instead of the old campy down tube ones. Such an improvement.
      Thanks again for your help.

      @@michaelcowan7801 You're welcome and great to hear its working. I'm jealous you have a Tommasini. The Super Prestige was one of my favorites that I never got to own. Enjoy! Eric

    Where can the bushing/gasket be bought?

    • @operabike
      @operabike  Před 2 lety

      Hello, that is a tough one. Not sure if anyone sells individual parts for these shifters. I would look around on ebay. Its also possible you might find a thin washer that could be a substitute. If I recall those are 0.15mm thick. The outside dimension is something I did not measure but if you have other parts you could match them up. Hope this helps.

      @@operabike ... Yes , eBay has some shifters for sale but no parts. It's hard to pay 70.00, 80.00 if I only need washers.
      But thanks for reply.
