Hope you enjoy the video! Please post your suggestions! :)
Alright, here it is! This song is a freaking ****, but so fun to play! Might even be the hardest song I ever learned rhythmically.
Sorry for messing up the timing around bar 242 - 249. After recording many takes up to 16 minutes I decided to go with it :D
- USEFUL INFORMATION -
Tuning: Drop D (D A D G B E)
Every bar could be counted as 21/8 if you want. The time signatures I used for the parts represent how I count them. They all add up to 21, actually kinda cool.
132: Here should be a D power chord obviously, I forgot to notate that.
305: This could also be Jones' special pull-thru triplets, but I figured the other notes would be more fitting for rest of the sequence.

Synced guitar tab (gp, gp5 and pdf) is in the description. Feel free to give feedback and submit corrections, I will note them down in the description :) Sorry for messing up the timing from bar 242 to 249... Recording a 16 minute long song is _very_ exhausting, so that's as perfect as it gets :D
Nah bro, sorry, you gotta do it again. This is CZcams. 100% perfection or we'll complain and call you names.
Just got my tickets for their Boston show. Been trying since 97 to see these guys.

This is the first song I learned on guitar. Once I get a little better at it I'm gonna move on to Smells Like Teen Spirit. Wish me luck!
Dang, pretty impressive. This songs a bit advanced for your first song
Shouldn’t it be the other way around?
good luck on teen spirit. i tried the first chord and broke my hand in 3 places.

Who else believes in these dudes to knock out one more record?
I'd be happy if they retired actually. Fear Inoculum was their worst album and chances are they have peaked and I wouldn't want them to beat a dead horse. They had a hell of a run though.
Billy The Flid why worst I think it was pretty good
@@mikeydfas9 because the new album was quantity over quality, there's so much needless meandering. Obviously Tool are renowned for making long songs but seriously making every song over 10 mins doesn't qualify them as good. I found myself skipping the interludes after the first listen also.
If it's going to be like this one, I pass.
@@Erickhetfield it will be. Danny said they have over an albums worth of material left over from Fear Inoculum that they will consider making into another album once they're done touring off this one for the next 2-3 years.
So basically they're content with using Fear Inoculum left overs to make another TOOL record and if so, then I reckon that spells the sharp decline of this band unfortunately.
I completely disagree with all the haters of Fear Inoculum. I have been a tool fan since the beginning of my music listening days and Fear Inoculum to me is their most technical, most mature and most progressive album to date. I don't agree that there is a lot of wasted space and meandering, it is meant to be exactly how it is. The music is so advanced that there are many people - mainly the ones who are addicted to the instant gratification headbanger heavy riffs all the time - who don't quite understand what Tool has communicated on this album. To me, every album is different and I truly believe that 7empest has become THE quintessential Tool song. It is THE culmination of their entire career and sound on one song.
They definitely have more records left in the tank and I couldn't be more excited.
BY THE WAY, MAX great job, this takes a lot of hard work and patience and I applaud you. Well played!
Thank you very much, Anton! I agree with you, though I can't become as emotionally attached to Fear Inoculum as with Lateralus or Ænima. It's an amazing record, though, and it's obvious lots of creativity has flown into the record :)
Tool fan since the beginning...I feel every album they made was better than the one before. Fear Inoculum is by far thier best....
Adam Jones said: “it’s not good when it’s done, it’s done when it’s good.” This album is thirteen years good.😛
End to end this is their best album. Shows major musical maturity. This album only gets better with each listen. I struggled at first with it but after multiple listens this is their best sonic experience for sure.
Very well said Anton! I agree 💯💯🤘🏻🤘🏻
5:30-5:40 I feel like I could play this section

The final boss of Tool discography
I remember when aenima came out. There wouldn’t be accurate tabs for years. Even over a decade really. Really impressive there buddy.
Thanks! Haha I still don't know if I'm playing Ænema right :D
@@MaxNiessl You captured the feel, and all those nuanced open string phrasings at the end of the song. Not many people can do that
@@nonipaulette4520 Thank you so much! Glad to hear you enjoyed it! :)
it was such a different ball-game back then; not everyone had internet, dialup was slow, there was no youtube, and what tabs existed were often way, way off. I'm pretty jealous of people learning the guitar now, they just have so many more resources at their disposal than we did a couple decades ago.
@@enaidealukal9203 Also I remember posting lyrics was a copyright infringement, so even lyrics was very hard to find (with no Google)
This album is easily the peak of Adam Jones, and of Tool imo. Never seen another band peak nearly 30 years after their debut.
Adam Jones really stepped up though, it's amazing. Wish he was always his good, the guitar tone on this album in particular is just so delicious and textured.
It's like he prepared for this song for his whole life. Adam Jones magnum opus.
I really don’t think this is the peak of Tool. Tool peaked with 10,000 days I feel.
@@MrSnuffian 10000 days was awful. I thought the band was done after that album, then they made this masterpiece.
algo hahahahah you think this slow, repetitive album that only has two good songs is better than 10,000 days? I love tool but Jesus this album is boring. All the best moments on the album are just call backs to other better songs. The riff in invincible? It’s Jambi all over again. Descending? It’s just the synth from the Grudge. This song? It’s sounds just like something off 10,000 days with Maynard singing likes it’s the opiate EP.
algo to say 10,000 days was awful and then turn and say this lackluster grouping of 6 songs is a masterpiece and their magnum opus is an insult to Tool
4:25 the most beautiful/sexiest riff ever created
Listening to this song with the eye of the musician makes you appreciate 1000 times more their work. Incredible song

I'm a drummer and that part at 7:46 gives me chills every single time I hear it, without fail.
I'm a drummer too, and I have recurrent daydreaming episodes where I headbang to this part. What a masterpiece
not a drummer here, but the beginning of Jambi gives me chills! such a percussive sound for a guitar
Those triplets trip me up every time 🔥🤌🏻
What Adam has been able to do with the Dm Pentatonic scale( with the occasional Em, Prison sex, Parabola)has been simply astonishing considering its been over 25 years, Page Hamilton(Helmet) called this Tuning and scale "Musical Economy"
Yes, it's truly fascinating. Love your username :D
@@MaxNiessl funny you're the first Tool fan that has even been able to figure out the referrence

That dirty solo is the best the Jonesman has ever done
Agreed
For those of you that want to skip right to the good part of the song: 0:00 to 15:48
Watching someone play the whole song, especially the solo makes it even more beautiful.
Totally agree with that, I like this song even more now after getting a further look into the details.
adam jones has 12 fingers, this guy has the same number
This guys incredible!!! Almost as good as my air guitar version.
Thanks man! Can't compete with your air guitar version, though :(
"Play Along Tabs" hahaha this mans got jokes :D
You can do it 🤘
Almost every song is played in some kind of Dm mode, almost lol, but the amount of creativity to take that sound and dominate it, is a beauty to behold.
Hardest part about this song is just remembering half of it
My son is a TOOL fan (as am I)
I had him listen to the King Crimson album Discipline. His reaction was "holy shit! Obviously a huge influence on Adam and Danny!"
Most definitely, great album! :)
The coolest part is new king crimson is more influenced by Tool than Tool ever was by KC. Imagine the band that got you to start writing music decides to start playing more like you instead. Also the show they both played together in 01 on the Lateralus tour was legendary. It’s still on CZcams, I recommend giving it a listen if you haven’t! 🌀
I will check this ablum out now thank you!
I remember an old Danny Carey interview, like sometime in the 90s, and he was talking about his influences and he put on the song "Discipline" specifically, and talk about Bruford. I will go to my death bed, regretting not be able to catch any of the shows Tool and KC played together, what an experience that would have been!
(also, bonus Fear Inoculum/King Crimson comparison: the instrumental chorus of Pneuma reminds me quite a bit of the main lick in One More Red Nightmare, where the guitar/bass hold the final note of the riff, over increasingly complex drum fills by Danny/Bill... it may be coincidence, and its certainly less obvious than the Frame By Frame/7empest comparison, but to me it was pretty striking)
you have very lucky neighbors
Hahaha I guess :D
Gold 🤣👌🏼
7:47 is some of the sickest riffage I’ve ever heard in my goddamn life
Yo!
Yeah, but at 10:50 7:47 takes steroids.
@@adammeyer8204 thats the best thing about adam jones haha. take his riffage and adds more riffage hahaha
Have you heard of the song four housemen by Metallica there's a riff in the song that's kinda like that part it's fucken awesome
Holy crap how did you figure all that out, let alone the talent it takes to actually play it flawlessly. Amazing!
Yuibot he’s been on vacation since August 30th
Opening riff definitely inspired by King Crimsons song Frame by Frame
Of course, it is. Robert Fripp from King Crimson is Adam Jones's biggest influence. And Tool inspired King Crimson too :)
@@temporarymomentary seriously, that has to be the greatest compliment a guitarist can receive- that ROBERT FRIPP approves!
Enai De A Lukal Robert Fripp is like a god in progressive guitar world
@@temporarymomentary right, hence my comment
And the riff from forty six is also inspired by frame by frame
I literally clapped my hands for you in front of my mobile screen
Haha thanks! _* bows *_
I was an 18 year old kid and walked into the record store (1969) and they were playing Black Sabbath. Damn, those guitar riffs!! It was the greatest thing ever. Not until Tool came along did I feel that again. This riff is gut churning, just amazing stuff. Thank you Tool!!!!!!!!!! You play it pretty dang well too. Thanks
Thank you so much! :) I believe Tool have changed many of our lives \m/
Clearly you put a lot of hard work into this - the tab alone must have taken days to notate/sync.
Outstanding vid. Thank you!
Yes, it was actually pretty time consuming. Thank you so much! :)
@@MaxNiessl worth it though, very good cover, and tabs seem pretty close to dead-on. And now I know why those middle/later sections felt slightly wonky, I was thinking that surely the song was in 7 (since its called "7empest"), but its actually alternating 4/4 and 13/8! I don't know how DC keeps track of their time signature shenanigans, guy is a machine! (and Rosetta makes even this track look straightforward, as far as rhythm and meter go)
Man this guy is amazing 🔥🔥
Flawless dude, as usual! I think you're onto something with the harmonics at 11:26.
Thanks bro! I think so, the sequence should be correct note-wise, but the ring modulator and harmonic execution need some work. That part is so weird, I love it :D
@@MaxNiessl Can you explain briefly what is ring modulation and what you did there?
@@MaleitasFrancisco Ring modulators multiply two signals together and create new frequencies with them. Thankfully, I'm not a physician, so I don't know the specifics. Long story short, it creates sci-fi noises. I just used the stock ring modulator in my Kemper and messed around with it until I got the sound that I wanted :)
@@MaxNiessl Pretty cool stuff!Thanks
@@MaxNiessl I think it might be a pick scrape with some ring modulator stuff. I swear i can hear the friction between the pick and the strings...

Just watched this for about the hundredth time. I can't get over how perfectly you nail every note... every riff. I can barely remember what I said or did yesterday. It is so much more fun watching Max play this than just hearing the record version. Max, your achievement passes both criteria: It is both EPIC and DOPE.
I feel like the bad guy in the movie Amadeus. I own a Silverburst Les Paul, and I would trade it in a second for even half your talents! You are, indeed, the Man.
Thank you so much, dude! Very glad you enjoy my content so much. Hopefully I'll get around to tab out Culling Voices this evening :)
Dominae Superium for interest’s sake his name’s Salieri
And if I'm the man, then you're the man and he's the man as well.
Max's precision is on point!
I think every Tool song ever written has open D chugging in a weird time signature and its still not fucking boring
When I learned this song I basicly split it up into 3 sections. It makes it easier to learn and remember.
I play it as if it was 3 songs
GOOD LORD, MAN! I just finished learning Pneuma (all thanks to you) and I thought that song was hard! This one is near impossible for me.. it took me a week to learn Pneuma, it’s gonna take me a month to learn this one.
My wife is going to kill me. THANKS A LOT! 🤣
Haha thank you so much! Great to see you're making progress, brother! 7empest is rhythmically one of the hardest songs I've ever transcribed and learned. Have fun learning it :)
Yes, I did a search for 7empest tabs and this video was one of the links that popped up. I resisted clicking on it, because it wasn't exactly what I wanted. Man am I glad I finally caved in and clicked on this. Max, you are fuckin AMAZING!
@@68dsuding Thank you so much! Most of my tabs are also on Ultimate Guitar :)

7:47 Holy shit! Easily Adam heaviest Riff to date ...so good. Dude seriously guitar work! Badass \m/
The grudge still takes the cake imo but damn he sure knows how to pull off a low heavy note, like in 9:13
Dude that bit in the solo with the delay....nice
This is even more proof that this is probably one of the greatest guitar solos of the 21st century so far!
Every note in this song looks so damn hard just by looking. Imagine how hard it might be for this guy to nail this song so perfect. And Don't dare imagine how some guy that was born in this planet like everyone else created those !!!
Repetition, my friend. But you are correct. We're lucky to have this fleshed out in such detail. What a treat from Max.
Anybody who says Adam Jones is not one of the best is insane
Adam is not a shredder, I'm sure he could messing around by himself (maybe). But he damn sure is a percussive player. One of the best, and best riff writers. He has a far above average knowledge of putting together parts you would never think would work, but they do and with fantastic outcomes. Young guys this go to show you that you don't have to play 50 notes per second to be a damn good guitar player. I spent years learnings scales, sweep picking, legato runs. But I would trade it all to be able to put together songs like Adam does. And Justin and Danny. 🤘🤘
He also has written some awesome solos too, he's definitely one of my favorites
yep, he is perfect for tool. Petrucci is perfect for dt, hetfield perfect for metallica and so on :)
It's as if AJ knows how to play drums, him and DC are like one and honestly, it's all four of them that make the band so awesome and one of a kind.
Outstanding! Can't wait for Culling Voices. And when you get to them, studio versions of Invincible and Descending would be sweet.
Thanks! That's the plan since so many have already asked for the studio versions :)
Love your videos and tabs. I'm super excited about how you interpret studio Descending, as the section starting around 7:47 speaks to me on an emotional level. Frisson every time I hear it.
@@F3Ibane Thank you! Yes, goosebumps when he rolls those spider fingers :D

This song will be loved more in the future.
The nuance and discipline Adam plays with is remarkable.
MIND = BLOWN. Dude you are a SICK guitarist !
*play along* all you have to do is literally transcend space and time to superposition yourself on a plane of probability where you can play two different tabs at the same time, as seen in 11:33.
Great video, keep up the great work!
Exactly! :D
Thank you :)
Great job! One of my favorite things about Adam Jones is how in a 15 min song he will play with no overdubs and then kick in a second guitar 80% of the way through. Pushit is a good example.
"Break G" raises the hairs on the back of my neck like nothing else. And I love what Danny is doing with the kick drums in the background, here. I wish I understood enough music theory to understand what they're doing on this song.
Freaking incredible! I've been playing for years and the first 10 times I saw you play this I didn't think I could ever do it. Thanks to you I'm almost there!
That's awesome, Mike! Glad to help, you can do it 🤘
My biggest dream is to own and learn how to play an electric guitar, and this video encouraged me even further into fighting for this dream to be fullfilled! I love TOOL and this song is fantastic, but watching it being played is better than just listening. I might come back to this video in a near future to try and learn all this. Awesome video, good job! That MASTODON shirt absolutely ROCKS too
Thank you so much, dude! Really glad you're enjoying my content! I wish you a lot of fun on your guitar journey :)

That was AMAZING! Great song. I'm still losing my shit over this album. Great video. You are talented man.

Very nice song. Starts with a beautiful, captivating progression and then turns into a really beefy, old-school riff. Really unexpected when i first heard it.
Entire song reminds me of Undertow, like an angrier Prison Sex.
A Tool cover with a Mastodon shirt has to be epic. Nice job, man!
Now play this song twice a day, and you've covered the daily recommended cardio.
I don't normally comment on CZcams videos but when I do it's to say that what I just witnessed was extraordinary! Amazing talent that can't be overstated, It's one thing to cover a song with an interpretation, but to cover Adam Jones playing so flawlessly, to be so sublime, is nothing short of..."damn!" Well played Max! Well Played.
