My favorite thing she did was when she was in Friends playing Joey's crazy girlfriend who thought he was really Dr Drake Ramoray. That maniacal laugh LOL 🤣
I loved her as the trashy neighbor in the Middle!!!!
Her creepy insanity in Nip/Tuck!
OMG that was amazing! I’d forgotten she was on Friends. I’ll have to watch that episode again 😂
Yes! I love that! Also, if you haven't watched her in *Jane the Virgin,* you should! She is hilarious. Her and Jamie Camil (he plays Rogelio De La Vega) are a perfect comedy duo on that show!
She also had a memorable cameo in the underrated Freaked.
Brooke was a HUGE deal back in the day and it's a tribute to her that she carved out a good, mostly normal life. My Mom collected dolls and I still have some Brooke dolls. Beautiful is an understatement. I admire her!
Brooke Shields gave Stephen Colbert a rest break. I love listening to her talk.
She is a natural interviewee...engaging, articulate, interacting with the audience. So classy.
Brooke was at an event when I was in my early 20s. She was STUNNING in person. It was overwhelming to be in her presence, and see that no, she doesn't look like the rest of us.
Still waiting for the day when CBS figures out how to post the whole interview in one video
I recently saw an episode of "TWO AND A HALF MEN" from several years ago with "BROOKE SHIELDS" and "NAILED IT"...God bless this beautiful down to earth woman 🙏❤️
Man, Brooke looks fabulous! So nice to see her speak about her time with Calvin Klein. I experienced that whole controversy first hand while working in Calvin’s in-house ad agency, CRK. For those who are too young to remember, the ads pushed the envelope in so many ways, not just with sexual innuendos, but social morays. especially, as they were released just as AIDS was about to be brought to national attention. I never thought, that as a member of the LGBTQ community, (with all the strides we’ve made) that today, we would be confronting censorship as we had, back then.
She was a child being sexualized through the male gaze. The innuendo could've been used with an adult model.
@@bethanythatsme that’s true, but the audience at the time buying the designer jeans, was my and her age. And the campaign did also have older models. Jerry Hall for one. But no one remembers that. Not to mention, Calvin’s advertising launched the career’s of Mark Wahlberg, Isabella Rossellini, and Andie MacDowell.
"O tempura, o morays!" -- Marcus Tullius Cicero, the famous connoisseur of deep-fried eels.
@@bethanythatsme poor Brooke and she only became a famous model and actor. How did she cope with that horrible male gaze.
Last time I checked it was women who bought those nice Calvin’s not us filthy men
@@critterkarma Au contraire. I was in middle school then, and designer jeans were a MUST HAVE if you wanted to fit in. .I wore Calvin Klein, Gloria Vanderbilt and Jordache. God bless my parents for sacrificing to make sure I had them when they didn't have to.
What was the atmosphere like inside the agency during that time? Was it tense?
Brilliant interview Brooke! Loved your narrative on the Dick Avedon Calvin commercials!
Discovered this man during COVID time.
Great sense of Homour, even though the authors of the Simpsons still on the top, pure genius.Good morning from Milano.
I loved Brooke Shields as the low class neighbor with the unruly kids in The Middle. She was hilarious.
Rita Glossner!!! She was amazing!
Who doesn't love Brooke? She's so genuine and such a survivor. I have always admired how she has continued to work, love and laugh right on through life. Atta girl.
On the basis of this interview I am a Brooke Shields fan. She is intelligent and moral.
Loved watching Suddenly Susan as a teen with my mom.
Also thought Brooke Shields was hilarious on The Middle 😂😂
Still absolutely gorgeous.❤
Brooke is wonderful! Kind and down to earth in real life, love her!
I love Brooke Shields. And, of all the things she has done, my favorite two projects of hers was the movie *The Bachelor* with Chris O'Donnell, and, of course, *Jane the Virgin!!!!* Oh Man, I loved Brooke on that show!!! Her and Rogelio De La Vega were a match made in Heaven and I wish we could have gotten a spin-off show with those two.
One of my fave new recent Stephen Colbert interviews. Love what she’s wearing here, indeed a fascinating and interesting documentary and life she has lived. Adore her first appearance on Johnny Carson, forever the king of late nite. The press could have learned a lot from true professionalism and such a sweet charming gentleman. One of my fave sounds in the world is hearing her laugh and seeing her big bright smile. Forever Queen and gorgeous beauty goddess Brooke Shields. 😍🥰😘
I never liked her much, but on the other hand I never had anything against her and was appalled at some of the attacks she suffered.
I mean, the ads were sexualising a 15-year-old girl. But the outrage would've felt more genuine if sexualising 14 and 15 year old girls weren't an everyday occurrence in the fashion industry and frankly throughout society.
12
Maybe, just maybe, we shouldn't be doing that.
@@sarahwbs, why?
sarcasm!
But that still wasn’t nearly as bad as around the same time, when Annabella Lwin appeared nude on the cover of one of Bow Wow Wow’s albums when she wasn’t even 18 (not to mention what I Want Candy was really about).
I think CBS made the right call. That CK ad campaign made me uncomfortable as hell and I'm no prude and only 3 or 4 years older than Brooke. Perhaps it's because I saw her as a child first and watched her grow up, I see her as a person, not a star. I got the same cringe watching the system chew up Drew Barrymore.
OMG! I was working at the Grand Canyon when she was filming "Wanda Nevada" and saw her. She was adorable and well mannered. She was beautiful then, she is beautiful now -she certainly has aged MUCH better than I have! 😄 So nice to see that a "child actor" can grow up "normal".
Her mother really DID make sure she wasn't exposed to the seedy side of Hollywood. Brooke felt she was way overprotective, but in the end it worked.
@@sallyphillips9175 She was horrifically sexually and financially exploited her mom. In her documentary she talks about being sexually assaulted in the industry and unable to say or do anything about it. She is clearly still traumatized as she still can't come to grips with the really of what happened. This is beyond sad and tragic!
LOl...yep "come wasn't spelled differently"... I hear your Booke!!! I had that problem in High School in Australia in the 1980's too.. the teachers took things way beyond what us kids thought of, or did/created for art or other projects etc.
"I never went there..." Me neither! Same age as Ms. Shields, and I completely understood the ad. *slapping my forehead*
Hey Jennifer! Apologies for dropping this here I came across your CZcams channel and I would love to know you better. I'm guessing you must be an honest person, because I always found your comments to be so nice and respectful. If it's okay with you, I'd love to be friend but if it sounds odd or embarrassing in any way please don't embarrass me by replying. Have a wonderful day, and keep sharing!
Every single man understood it !
Beautiful, still the same amazing personality, and you to Brook.
4:21 She went there!🤣🤣🤣
But, I saw that commercial at the time. I even remember her voice in it.
Watch the uncut "Pretty Baby" and you wonder why and how her mother didn't get arrested.
It's sick how her mother let her pose in playboy at ten.
4catsnow, rent it from the library, if you and your kind haven't burnt it down yet. Nothing in or about the movie was illegal then, isn't now, and never will be.
Just getting to 'know her' background. She's very articulate, and amiable. Also, her eyes, has a fierce determination? 😉😊There's like a lot on her mind, and she's sharing it successfully. New fans gained I guess!
One of my daughters grew up being stopped by strangers telling her she looked like Brooke Shields.
Lucky (beautiful) girl!
@@SMtWalkerS she's still a beauty. When she was a baby, people would stop me grocery aisles to ask if she was wearing make-up ;-)
I guess it would seem a tad odd to run '*note spelling' under every add...
Johnny Carson was a true gentleman. They don't make 'em like that anymore.
Depends on which part of his life you're talking about. 😕
Not when he hung up on Joan Rivers. Not when he tried to date Sally Field. This phrase sounds like a PR announcement.
Not when he was drinking by all accounts.
He was like that on TV only to appeal to a greater audience. Not taking any sides. That is almost hypocrisy.
I thought her response was really interesting, because he gives me total creep vibes. One time he flirted heavily with a 12-year-old genius college student, and anytime he had on any woman under 50 he just acted gross. I know some of this is seeing things through modern eyes, because we call people on things that were deemed normal or harmless - and I am old enough to remember Love's Baby Soft ads (and owned it myself). My husband and I have a deal that he can watch Johnny Carson until he does or says something nauseating. (Episodes with Dom DeLuise are an exception!)
Stunning
My first crush and now my last crush.
Stunning and classy
Hard to come by these days.
And then, there's the big shoe retailer who back in the late sixties that had the unforgettable national ad campaign that went, "Girls love boys with Hardys on." Nobody batted an eye. British author was right when he started a novel, The Past is a different country. We don't live there any more."
My childhood crush still going strong. Underrated .comedic actor too (c.f. Friends).
I saw her in another interview where she said she didn't want to just be known for her looks - but she was SO beautiful, most of us would love to be even half as pretty!!
*What interview, please*
The spelling joke was priceless
Damn she went there lol mad respect. She’s so cool. an icon indeed
As an actress, not a fan. But she continues to be gorgeous. And a genuinely nice person.
You go girl!
Regarding all of the comments about her looks, and whether or not she's still beautiful--did nobody absorb that this woman wanted to be thought of as something other than just her looks? She hasn't had plastic surgery, it seems. She could afford it. What does that tell us? The obsession with her exterior, from what I've heard her say in other interviews, meant nobody thought enough about her talent (or anything else). She wanted them to think about her talent! Kudos to the people who at least mention her as a person. That said, this is the way it is. Hopefully, her daughters have been taught not to judge their value by their looks. I would be shocked if this weren't the case. I hope they really internalized that lesson.
In addition to appearing not to have had anything "done," it also looks like she doesn't even whiten her teeth, which is also refreshing! A woman fortunate enough to have great natural beauty just being her age! (Although I have to say, I doubt that she's had absolutely *nothing* done ... very conservative botox here or there, and some laser treatments for discoloration and firming, most probably.)
@@JackOllie4 I still think it would be great if humans could focus a bit less on beauty and bit more on talent, resilience, character...I know this is highly unlikely. I commented because I found it striking how disconnected people remain from what strikes me as one of the points she is trying to make--that being objectified wasn't a positive thing for her, and she hoped people would notice something other than her beauty. And yet, people get stuck there, with very little reference to anything else. I realize that you're saying that her not having whitened teeth is a sign of character. That said, she went to Princeton. She's very good at comedy, which isn't easy. She became a very good mother, it seems, despite her flawed role model. She is also gracious enough to give her mother credit, despite mentioning how difficult it was to be raised by an alcoholic. The beauty was an accident! The rest, she worked at. She mentioned working very hard, trying to prove that she had more than just looks. Thank goodness she seems not to be focused on what people are saying about her, at this point. I suspect she'd find it frustrating.
I love colbert bc he knows what happened this entire time and how ice cream played an important (innocent) role in the situation.
I never understood what the controversy was..in fact, I thought it was because she was supposedly a virgin, holding out till married that it meant, No one will get in my pants.
id forgotten that aside from being stunning shes is so intelligent and thoughtful......
I loved her in "Suddenly Susan"
That was my favorite show !!! They don’t make them like that anymore!😢❤
I think Brooke missed the point why sexualizing a pre-teen for the adult male gaze through thinly veiled innuendo is an issue.
She lived through it, I do not imagine she does not understand as you suggest.
@@sheilamansell5634 Living through it means her mind has to do everything possible to rationalize and minimize how truly horrific it actually was. If she doesn't do that, it could really destroy someone.
If you don’t like the ad, don’t look it. Stay in your church. She was not preteen. It’s a free country!!
@@navernono, but her mom allowed nude photos when she was 10, which came out when she was 15. So to say that she thought the whole CK campaign was innocent is, I believe, a bit disingenuous
Yeah, kind of ingenuous of her.. Hadn't she been in Pretty Baby? I never saw it, but I understand it was rated x? So when she said the line in the KK ad, it was on top of the role in Pretty Baby and everyone knew it was definitely about going cowboy (or girl).
Tame compared to now, but it was very controversial at the time, and being the same age as she was, it was definitely an uncomfortable time...felt like raw meat walking around in a hungry world, and the culture around me (as, for example, this ad) told me this was all a-okay.
She's stunning !
Growing old beautifully.
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN IN THE WORLD AT ANY AGE...❤❤❤
Stephen, I am your biggest fan Indonesia. I shared your opening words congratulating Brooke Shields for being normal and level headed. She is my number one best actress. She has been acting perfectly since 11 months old, as she describes it. I hope she stars many more blockbuster movies to come in her 50s. Cheers.
She is adorable ❤️
Speaking as a dog lover, I can relate.
Wonderful artist yea Brooke❤️❤️❤️
she's absolutely beautiful inside and out
She looks 22 lol elegant as always
she still is a stunning beauty even at 60 years young!!

What a lady
Stag bothered me as a word. Those swinger parties bothered me when I read about them with the keys in a bowl.
And now we have rhe classy W.A.P. Boy, we've come along way baby 😂
Owning your sexuality as an adult and being sexualized as a child through mass media is very different.
It's misdirected that the actress is blamed for her lines, if you're angry, take it up with the writer! Jessica Alba was similarly blamed for a role on a medical show where she caught chlamydia.
"I loved that Steve lost if at "Come wasn't spelled differently."
Brooke is awesome
She is holding up well. This woman is taking care of har self...
Controversies never had felt the amount of pain that it deserves for what it's done to our society
Brooke is a lovely lady.
Brooke is so sweet :(
Stephen blushed 😂. He recovered quickly !.
She looks fantastic! Brooke was always my heartthrob and has never let me down. She's what I always wanted in a woman. Few if any can match her.
And then there was The Blue Lagoon.
She is an amazing, beautiful person. She's refused to be a victim (when many would in her circumstances) and so honest that her life experiences were both at times were both horrific but also sometimes amazing and she knows that she was sometimes grateful that she got the breaks she did. However, she's also in a great position to help avoid young girls being exploited in the way that she was.
Stephen always misses the second cheek kiss when greeting a guest. He did the same with Paul McCartney. Tsk tsk…🫢
She was hilarious in The Middle as Rita Glossner, the crazy neighbor

@@brandonfields4927From where I sit that is something young people say... 😊
When my dad said smthg about you when I was a kid when you said nothing gets between me and my Calvins.
what I remember from that time was it was a trend with young women to go panty free. the style was tight jeans and undies create lines you could see. this solution wasn't looked kindly upon by the older generation, but we all thought they were just being fussy uptight old folks. there were no thongs back then
Remember zipping those jeans with a pair of pliers!? The things we went through...😅
@@LindaC616 and lying flat on the bed to get the best angle/flat stomach to do the zip? good times...I have a theory. once fake salon nails came on the scene we had to let go of the tight look - I couldn't do a zipper with them or it nearly impossible. it was long nails or tight jeans.

She was one of the most beautiful women in the world, still is. How hard it must be for these stunning people to get older..
Like her
I feel like sometimes the media actually tried to protect her, but it only made things worse in her eyes because they actually said "it is wrong what is being done to you". At the same time she is not someone who would just complain about her mom and put all the blame on directors and producers and photographers, which I find refreshing. She doesn't play the victim.
Now we got skidrock up in arms about light beer and tiktok ads.
Fucking beautiful
3:09 starts here
I thought it was Caitlyn Jenner!
a bit harsh, but you did make me laugh, Velma :)))
Calvin Klein should hire her again to revisit the advert for a modern audience
She’s still amazing
I kind of have to laugh about the comments where people are saying she was being disingenuous and that coming between her and her jeans was a deplorable innuendo. Has anyone considered that perhaps it was a "you're a kid don't have sex" comment? If nothing comes between her and her Calvin Klein's then she's not having sex.
Yes that ad can be taken many ways. I'm just sayin' . . .
It's a very fine line here. Sure, they're "just selling jeans"...using a sexualized image of a minor. I find it strange that she's never felt that her ads were very sexual. It seems like denial. What did she think they were? I'm glad though, that she seems un-traumatized by the whole thing. Maybe ignorance is bliss. I am in no way blaming her, but the industry. I also wonder that her mother was also unable to see the innuendo and the sexual imagery?
I LOVED that Calvin Klein campaign!
I was a teenager at the time, and I had to have those jeans! Pretty expensive for 1980. I wore the heck out of them. 😊
@MissHappiness36 they didn't make them in my size. And my hair wouldn't do the Farah Fawcett flip. ...it was rough
I never wanted to overpay for pants. She's O.K. Whatever! * Cav *
A child actress that survived Hollywoods toxicity and bulls**t
Still a Goddess 💐🔥🏆⭐️💖♥️🇺🇸
I feel very sorry for Brooke Shields when her body of work (yes pun intended) seems to have caused most people over 13 to assume the worst about something much more minor and implicit in her Calvin Klein commercials.
she is a classic
I’m confused. For years she defended that movie and her playboy shoot. All of it. Said she had zero regrets. Now that society is finally acknowledging how wrong it all was she’s now saying it wasn’t ok? And the fact that she still won’t acknowledge how awful the Calvin Klein ad was for someone her age shows she’s not “normal” she’s doing what she “thinks” she should do 🤦🏻♀️
I did not know that for years she defended the movie and the playboy shoot. Yes, all of this is very confusing !
@@Fouloul. The thing was that in the 70s sexualizing minor girls was "normal." I am around her age, and we were all sexualized. Not as desirable as she was, or rich, or famous. But all the girls wanted to be in a Playboy shoot (overtly or secretly) and wanted to be ogled by 30 year old men. We were still coming off of the sexual revolution of the 60s and it was considered healthy to not be "inhibited." The refreshing thing about Brooke is that she admits she wasn't sexually knowledgeable. She was less fake than most.
She seems nice!
