  • SLOWBRO! The Hermit Crab Pokemon!....Even though its clearly a Hippo but I won’t judge. Slowbro evolves via a shellder biting its tail which brings its mind back to reality which is otherwise filled with psychic energy. Join False Swipe Gaming and find out with this brief overview of the competitive History of Slowbro!

    DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
    Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
    To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
    To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
    For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

    Slowbro/poke facts!
    -Slowpoke’s tails are apparently delicious, hence why Shellders like to bite on them!
    -Slowbro was created before Slowpoke
    -In early development of Red/Green, Slowpoke was called Yaddohogera. Hogera is essentially gibberish, so Slowpoke’s name was just to show that it was connected to Slowbro
    -Slowking was found dead in an alleyway on March 3rd, 2004

      @XJoschYZ Před 5 lety +62

      I think I tested this around 3-4 years ago based on a hunch I had as a child. In general: Pokémon couldn't be affected by statuses of moves which had a type in common with them so no thunder(bolt) paralysis on electric-type Pokémon or freeze on ice-types.

    • @Dylan-hc2lu
      @Dylan-hc2lu Před 5 lety +20

      Thunder wave still works on electric types in gen 1 stadium

    • @verikukko
      @verikukko Před 4 lety +52

      Thunder wave works on every non-ground type pokemon in cartridge gen 1 games too. Pokemon are only immune to the secondary status effect of damaging attacks of their type. So electric pokemon can't be paralyzed by Thunderbolt, but they can be paralyzed by Thunder wave since it doesn't deal damage and the paralysis isn't a secondary effect.

      Here is a weird one I learned recently. If you use the normal type attack wrap on a ghost it doesn't affect it but the wrap happens... It also doesn't deal damage but can waste a ton of turns. Potential for fire or poison dmg. Dank strats

      Indeed, it was named 'Turban' and was a pure water type, and was the mutated shelder that you see on Slowbros tail but as it's own off of Slowbro Pokemon. How you would get one is unknown, although I have always imagned that the Slowpoke tail item might have had something to do with it. Trade a shellder holding a slowpoketail or level it up holding it/use it on one and ta da, your shellder has evolved into Turban. Via them, you know, biting into a cut off slowpoke tail. Just a theory, but makes perfect sense right?

  • @youaregonnacarrythatweight6998

    Thank you for this awesome video! Slowbro is my favorite Pokemon due to a funny and ridiculous story. My cousin and I when we were 7 and 8 years old were completing the Pokemon red and blue in our respective Gameboy for the first time. The only Pokemon we needed to finally complete the game was Slowbro, because we managed to get mew with the hack exploit that an older kid taught us. We watched in the anime that Slowpoke evolved into Slowbro with a Shellder bite so we started to exchange my slowpoke and his shellder through our link cable and when the two little guys come across for a few seconds in our screens we started to smash the game boy buttons at the same time trying all possible combinations. We were about to give up when we thought, eh, maybe they need to be a little stronger, then when we exchange them they will do the weird polymerization thing. So I started to level up my Slowpoke and he did the same with the shellder cancelling the evolution to Cloyster each level up. Suddenly my Slowpoke reached lv 37 and it finally became a Slowbro. We felt so silly but also we felt so happy when we achieved our last Pokedex data hahahahah That was my favorite summer and since then I've been using Slowbro and also later Slowking in every Pokemon game. I miss the days when internet was not that big so we had to search info in the Pokemon magazines and the rumours and myths drove us crazy to try new things to search all the pokemons. Thanks for reading this, I really enjoyed this video a lot ! Greetings from Spain

    How GOOD was Sneasel/Weavile ACTUALLY?

    • @wazzupyoshi
      @wazzupyoshi Před 6 lety +2

      I can do an abridged version right now if you want.
      GSC: Crappy movepool, bad typing (weak against 5 types and quad weak to fighting), no STAB (35 base sp. attack will do nothing to anything), and bad defenses. It's fucking cool though, it just begs for swords dance (which it didn't have lol). It's countered by anything that has a super effective move against it (shoutouts to Machamp). It's not even worthwhile in UnderUsed.
      RSE: It has a better movepool (though that's not saying much), but much of what applies in GSC applies here. It can actually kill stuff now, most notable all psychic and ghosts types that aren't Alakazam and Starmie. With Swords Dance and Choice Band under its belt, it became a very potent threat in UnderUsed. Notable checks include most Intimidators, Blastoise, Meganium, Golem, and Sudowoodo in UnderUsed. I couldn't find anything for OU sorry.
      DPP: Sneasel evolves. Yay. And it's pretty good too. Weavile is most known for it being a fucking good physical attacker. With the Physical/Special Split happening, this thing actually has STAB now. Yay. it could kill a lot of things, a lot of things could kill it. It was even used as an attacking lead to fuck over Aero and Azelf. It's movepool isn't stellar, but hey, it's good. Very good. It's OverUsed, for God's sake. Common counters include steel types (shoutouts to Scizor), bulky shit (Gyarados is a good example), and Machamp. Especially Machamp.
      BW: Well then. Fighting types are everywhere. This isn't going to be good. It dropped to UnderUsed, but surprisingly, this thing still had some traction in OU, ranking B tier on the Smogon Gen 5 OU viability tier list, which is amazing for a meta filled with fighting pokemon. It's defenses don't help it though, being frail as fuck still (70/65/85 defense total is not that good) It was mainly used as a physical attacker, using pursuit to stand out from Mamoswine. To avoid it this being a page an a half long, it OHKO'ed shit, shit OHKO'ed it, its countered shit, shit countered it. Very much of a double-edged sword. In UnderUsed, it gets a bit more traction, but not much more, as Machamp still exists. In OU, notable counters are Vappy, Chansey, Skarmory, Forretress, Wish Jirachi, and Keldeo. In UU, notable counters are most bulky waters, bulky steel types, and Choice Scarf users that outspeed it (most notably Victini, Chandelure, Rotom H, Heracross, and Darmanitan).
      XY: This thing's back in OU. This'll be fun. It basically did the same shit it did since DPP, but now there's a gazillion fucking fairy types running around everywhere killing every goddamn dark and dragon type around. Same shit with it killing, same shit with it being killed, you get the point. Notable checks include Clefable, bulky waters, bulky steels, most any fighting type, and shit with priority moves. Weavile is still frail as fuck, so most anything that's faster than it is a threat.
      So yeah this thing was pretty goddamn good.

    • @thanhmaingoc2814
      @thanhmaingoc2814 Před 6 lety

      It's good: high base attack (135 atk, 130 def, 90 spd), good type combination (8 resistances + 1 immunity), access to some great moves (Meteor marsh, earthquake) and clear body is a nice addition to keep its stat high. The only barrier keeping it from dominated meta back then was mediocre base hp and speed (also lack of good psychic STAB)
      later version it gain bullet punch and zen headbutt which solve some of its problem. Hammer arm is a thing for dark and other steel-type pokémon
      And then, the mega evolution. Tbh, it not that impressive, speed is the most important thing metagross get, from 70 to 110 mean it can start sweeping now. Tough claw boost all of its STAB, too (and almost all of it attacking moves). It HP is abyssal for a mega evolution as it still 80. Steel-type now neutral to dark and ghost open up two more weaknesses for metagross, both are specialize in special moves.
      Imo metagross is one of the more balanced pokémon with clear strenth and weakness for check and counter
