To part 3 • Badfinger Doc 3 of 6 Fr/Wiki: Griffiths left the group shortly after these sessions. Reportedly, the primary reason was because he was the only married occupant of the communal band home, now raising a child there, and this created some friction, mainly between his wife, Evans and manager Collins. Griffiths officially was out of the picture by the beginning of November 1969.
In October 1969, while the release of "Come and Get It" was pending, the band and Apple Records agreed that a name change was critical. "The Iveys" were still sometimes confused with "The Ivy League", and the name was considered too trite for the current music scene. After much debate, the group changed their name to Badfinger. Other suggestions had included: "The Glass Onion," "The Prix", and "The Cagneys" from John Lennon, and "Home" by Paul McCartney.
The name Badfinger was suggested by Apple's Neil Aspinall as a reference to "Bad Finger Boogie", an early working title of Lennon/McCartney's "With a Little Help from My Friends", alleged by Neil Aspinall being that Lennon had composed the melody on a piano using his middle finger, after having hurt his forefinger.
For over a month the group unsuccessfully auditioned bass guitarists to replace Ron Griffiths. With the release date of "Come and Get It" fast approaching, Badfinger finally hired Liverpudlian guitarist Joey Molland (previously with Gary Walker & The Rain, Masterminds, and The Fruit-Eating Bears) at the last minute, which required Evans to shift to bass.
"Come and Get It" was released in December 1969 in the U.K. and January 1970 in the U.S. It reached the Top 10 throughout the world, including #3 in the U.S. Billboard charts. The track was also featured in The Magic Christian film. For the group's initial LP release, their three soundtrack songs were combined with some other Iveys tracks (including seven songs from the rare Maybe Tomorrow album) and released as Magic Christian Music. It peaked at #55 on the Billboard album chart in the U.S.

If anybody had the guts to listen to ''Walk out in the Rain'', then it sums up Bad finger's Greatness. It is one of those songs that you simply overlooked and finally realize that it was one of the best unheard gems ever.
Tom's early songs are killer and singing with Pete was magical ... like the Beatles ... great voice - hands down !
Brilliant. Simply brilliant band. They deserved so much more credit.
So sad of a story but what wonderful music they made
It was during The Beatles break up. The Fab Four were having problems too with Apple Records & Allen Klein. Read the book "You'll Never Give You My Money" and see how much it was a big mess after the break up. Why The Beatles didn't help Badfinger? The Beatles needed help themselves during the seventies & the rest of their affairs were finally straighten out in 1989.
God I love "Come And Get It. It is so damn catchy. And if you know the first part of the song you know the whole song. Just incredible.
Great upload man....I never knew this band n they gotta new fan.....wow so many good songs...I have heard a couple but didnt know who sang them. Awesome band n sad about the poor two dudes who killed themselves...poor guys
great band such a tragic and sad story
So much tragedy. And hurt. The band's history is full of bad omen you can't escape and deny. A fine example of victims if circumstance in the Lime light, driven by their dreams. They just wanted to create music and be known. Alas. Sadly.
awesome band, period.
Ivey love these guys!
Yeah, I remember reading Ron said that Paul had auditioned all of the four members and told Ron he sounded like the singer of the Troggs lol!
So sad. :(
Ron Griffiths is a great guy. Search for the Badfinger convention on Google. You can hear him sing "Come And Get It". It was a great tribute since he was played and sang on the song. All of Magic Christian Music is The Iveys with Ron!
Ron Griffiths is such a fun guy in this video. Tommy's vocals are incredible.
What Tony Visconti says is so true "the voices were remarkably like the Beatles". For many years I thought Day After Day was a Beatles song!
never knew all this
so sad. memories of their music as a kid .
Griffiths was in the Iveys and early Badfinger. Watch the whole documentary.
I noticed when they showed the Apple record label for Come and Get It the composer was listed only as McCartney. The Beatles were still together at this point. Is this the first example of the end of John and Paul's agreement to always credit their compositions as Lennon-McCartney?
he did'nt he 's great he gave badfinger a hit long live the beatles and badfinger
Personally i find Come And Get It a bit repetitive...i wonder what Badfinger would have done to it if they had had been given the freedom.
Don't know where it was a no 1. It certainly wasn't in the UK or US.
Lenno wanted to call them the Prix? That crazy bastard. Har, har, har.
Wait, who calls Mal the fifth Beatle?
Nobody…but there should have been a BTM episode on Mal Evans
@07504201963 Was correct - signed to Apple Records. Focal Point was publishing contract. Refer to great Apple publishing CD's out there and Badfinger book (if you can find it).
Sorry, but that's a gross oversimplification of how lives and events worked. It's easy in retrospect.
I feel like they should have kept 'The Iveys'... The moment they changed the name things seemed to have gone wrong... Something is just off how pure talent was doomed... people coming into your life should accept you the way you are or it's a no.
What is the music that starts at 0:08
@1FineYoungCannibal Let me guess.......you`re a Lennon fan. LOL. I am, too, but as a bass player myself, they come no better that McCartney. They might have still been playin clubs had it not been for the man.
Shame
Why didn't you protect them, PAUL ?!!
Alright - I've never met him / known anyone who met him but - I know that the received wisdom is that Paul McCartney is notoriously tight with money.
Paul had such an ego. Come and Get it wasn't even good enough to be a beatles studio album song. Sure it made Badfinger famous but every single one of Badfinger's songs were better
