Hello and welcome to my channel,
in this video I am restoring a abandoned billhook. I got the machete from Mister Patina. He brought it back to me from a visit to MyMechanics.
Of course the pressure is very high with it and I try to achieve the perfect restoration.
The antique knife is called a "Hippe" or "Gertel" in German. It is used in gardening to beat back unwanted bushes and branches less as a survival machete.
I started the restoration of the rusty billhook by removing the loose rust with the wire brush. Then I disassembled the old leather handle.
I removed the remaining rust by electrolysis.
Then I could start with the refurbishment of the blade. In various stages, I ground out the rust pits, leaving only a few to indicate the history of the antique tool.
The maker's name "Steinemann" remained visible and is nicely highlighted by the mirror polish steel of the blade again.
I sharpened the machete with an MDF grinding wheel that I made before.
I could not save the old leather handle because the leather was hard and brittle. For this reason, I made a new handle based on the original design using layered ebony and aluminum.
As always, there is a beer test before assembly. This time I test the belgian beer "Leffe".
After the well-deserved break, I reassembled the restored machete.
In the final tameshigiri test for katana swords with a tatami mat, the machete could prove its sharpness.
I am very happy with the asmr hardware restoration video and hope you have fun with it.

I have one exactly like it. Found it in a field. After restoration, it was a couple of decades before I put it to work. Its a fantastic tool. Its used for jobs I formerly did with loppers or small chain saw. Very efficient.
thank you for the aluminum wobble, it cured my depression
Oh Kalen I'm glad it brought light to your day. I hope you get well soon
"Not Terrible", my as_! That is one of the best restorations I have ever seen! It's beautiful!
Oh thank you Jay. Your compliment is very appreciated
Sweet!
Thanks my man and thank you for this nice gift
Awesome resto definitely not terrible not even a little
I don't know what's better the restoration or beer review.
Glad you liked both :)
People like you are one of the most underrated
Coconutty. Thank you very much. This is a big compliment
Fixing the edges and polishing the blade - you got my like!
Thank you very much
Ach Lorenz ❤️
I like the handle and the polish on the blade is great.
Thank you Mark
You always surprise me with your innovative ideas when repairing items when parts are not available or just improving on the original idea! You are a 😊 true craftsman. If I was young again, as a perfectionist I would really enjoy and excel in that type of work.
Top-Arbeit!
Knives and beer???? You sir have my subscription 😁
Welcome to the channel Joshua. Glad you came by and enjoy the 15 other projects so far
1. Amazing handle
2. Didn't know you could do that with mdf. Very cool 😁
Hey Frank, I was surprised how effective it is
Wonderful project, sir.
Many many thanks Mate!
Nike approved this !
I hope they did :D
The blade is cool but I love the color of that beer more.
Yeah it was the perfect color
Outstanding handle
Proper awesome and respectful!
Thank you very much
Congrats !!! Fyi, you made brand new and shining what is called a « Goyarde », famous in the French northern Alps.
I used to skip over the beer part of your recording, now I look forward to your rating.
very well done.
You passed with flying colors NTR! Handle was outstanding.
Wonderful work! Love love love the handle. The next time you have dried leather like that soak it in Neatsfoot oil for a couple days. Thats how we restore old leather on saddles and bridles and all.
An NTR video makes my Sunday afternoon. Leffe Blonde is in my top 5 world beers too.
Hey to see you so soon after upload makes my Sunday. Best regards Richard
The camera work was so good I could smell the rust. Excellent! Great job on this old school machete, loved the handle and finish work on the blade! Always a treat to see your techniques. Thanks & Cheers!
Glad you enjoyed it and thank you
She's a beauty. Excellent idea for the handle. Thank you.
Thanks a lot Shawn
Great job!
Thank you
Great restoration, like the handle. Plus that blade is sharp.
Yes it is and I'm glad it worked out with the MDF method
Great job.
Best regards !
Glad you liked it herby
I have a novel video idea! In one video you restore multiple simpler tools in succession as you find you need to restore the next in order to work on the one prior. You can build dramatic tension with each one and then finish them all in the end with elation.
Your stuff is the best. Never just an "ok" job. The beer is just icing on the cake
Great restoration!!
Glad you like it!
Ohhhhhh, Shiny! Very nice.
Hey J. I start to think that you really like shiny things :D
Absolutely beautiful sir
Thank you kindly Cody
Nicely done! 😃👌🏼
Thank you David
Good to see you back Dr Beer. Missed you and your excellent efforts. A+!
Welcome back Derek and thank you once again for this high class ranking!
That was awesome. Thank you.
No thank you for the nice comment and for watching
Tolle Arbeit.
Hey Christoph. Danke für das Kompliment.
Its nice to see a restoration video where the steel isn't turned into a wet noodle by over heating it with an angle grinder.
Even during grinding I constantly cooled it every other minute to prevent overheating the hardening
@@NTRprojects The other 99% of restoration channels seem to be filled with hipsters who own a lot of tools but don't understand steel. Its when you see them "heat treating" kitchen knife blades in a commercial electric oven that I cringe the most.
I too have totally same once ,but with yellow grip tape !!😃
:D :D
Incredible, and totally useful
Wow! That compass needs its own restoration video. Great job on the billhook. [chef’s kiss!]
Oh, merci beaucoup, mon ami
Great work .
Thank you John
Sehr schöne Restauration! Viele lustige Szenen waren drin, besonders lachen musste ich bei "Just do it" 😁 Der Griff war mein persönliches Highlight in diesem Video!
Parabéns, ficou show. Saudações do Brasil.
Very pretty like a good machete myself nice job
Glad to hear that you liked it savior
Well done, sir.
Thank you my friend
absolutely beautiful work. ty for the video.⛏️🔨🔩🔧🛠️⚒️👍
Very well done!!
Thank you Mr BEAR
Magnificent a highly skillful man a treasure to relish
Mark, I just saw this comment now. Thank you very much
That handle is exquisite, I noticed a few cuts and grazes along the way, the finished product is amazing
In the UK we'd call one of these a bill or a billhook. Used for hedgerow work originally. Pretty cool find and excellent work.
Ah thank you for this info. And thank you for your comment
I’m from the US and I’m fairly certain we also call them billhooks 🙂
Oh and I’m 99% sure they’re called a “billhook” blade because of their shape. Just for the few that might not know 😁
Not so much hedgerow work but what is known as "copicing" which is how woodland is kept accessible to live stock and walkers.
@@zoiders That wasn’t the primary purpose of copicing, it was a process to produce wooden poles of hazel or ash, harvested on an eight to ten year cycle. The poles were used to make a large variety of objects in pre-industrial society.
Ooooh a lovely find from the steel waste picking. Nicely done and loved the handle. Very clever with the "Just Do It", I really laughed out loud at that. Thanks for the upload!
Hey Vickie glad you liked this joke 😂
Very Beautiful. Love your work. and beer tasting. :)
Nice! That handle is gorgeous!
love how you edit your great videos
Absolutely, Beautiful! One of your best. I wish you had redone the handle in leather like the original. It offered some cushioning for the hand. (I emphasize "restoration")
Great job!!!👍👍👍
I enjoy watching tool restoration videos (yours included), and I gotta say: I am *AMAZED* at how many different methods there are to remove rust. Electrolysis, chemicals, or just plain grinding it off. It's fascinating!
Yes I do agree and I love to remove rust 😁
Laser…
Excellent work and humor, probably did not look that good new.
Glad you enjoyed it
It's absolutely beautiful, one thing though, traditionally, working knives such as machetes are usually blued, they are to be used outdoors and bare metal rusts extremely fast in those conditions.
As a show piece though, its stunning.
...lookin' good, nice job, have a great week...
Thank you Bob and same to you
"On the porch was a sling blade. Some people call it a Kaiser blade, but I call it a sling blade " 🙂👍🏻
I learned that this is called very different around the world, by wrongly naming it a machete :)
Great job
Very beautiful ☺️
Thanks berk
I love the idea of the MDF disc sharpening.
I'm gonna use that idea in my video if you don't mind.
Go for it. Maybe leave a hint to my channel
This one reminded me that I wish you lived in Arizona, I have a few things I would love for you to restore. 😊
This is fantastic. Not sure why people down vote this work of art.
Thank you for the appreciation
Muy buen TRABAJO. Lo felicito.
muchas gracias amigo
I always await for and enjoy your videos. They relax me and afterwords I enjoy a glass of my favourite beer... I'd love to share it with you one day.
You deserve more subscribers.
Nice work and good humor!! I Subscribed!!
Thanks for the sub and welcome to the channel Andrew!
I almost spit my soda through my nose at the Nike logo! Thank you! I really needed a good laugh today.
Hahaha glad you liked this one so much
Very nice
Leather makes such a good handle, though, for rough work.
Nice man beautiful
Thank you Jaime
Ok imma gonna say it…… I’m thoroughly tired of some of these restorers sayin’ shit like “I left the pits because they look cool” 🙄😒. If you are going to bring a piece back to life AND entertain your restoration should look BETTER than it did brand new!!
You kind sir have done just that!! What cool process. Other restoration channel TAKE NOTE!!!
You had me in the first half, not gonna lie. Glad you liked it.
And I totally see your point. But sometimes I also like to leave patina, but it must fit into a detailed finished in the end. I think you mostly refer to the channels where you can tell that they just didn't want to do the extra work
I'm Nutjob With A Machete and I approve this message.
😁😁😁 Thank you nutjob
You are not only a talented craftsman, you are also a creative genius, that handle is just amazing
This is one of your best videos by far! Your restoration was impeccable, and that handle you made is beautiful and suits the whole aesthetic of the piece so well.
Have you recently changed camera? Your filming and editing were gorgeous. It really made that beer's colour pop, it made me want one myself!
This was an absolute treat, thank you! I'm not well at the moment (my house has cov 19, thank you british government), so this brightened my day significantly.
Hey Joanna that's really bad news. Sending you and your loved ones all the best wishes. Get well soon
Right in time for Halloween. Jason Vorhees from Friday the 13th would be so proud of you!!! Danke!
Hahahaha I should have cut a pumpkin :)
Greetings from 9gag, mate!
Well done
Thanks mate. Nice to hear you took the detour ;)
Again, Dr Beer, a restoration outcome worthy of your craftsmanship. Your subscribers thank you. Cheers from Oz.
Many thanks and best regards back to Oz
Beautiful! And I really liked the split screen polishing comparisons!
Thank you Ellie. I just uploaded a new video! Sorry for the late reply
i always enjoy seeing you restore stuff
Great work!
Came for the channel name. Stayed for the skill. Great work.
Great to hear that you stay. Currently there are 15 projects waiting for you and more will come
When you put the machete on the table with the Nike logo I liked
So I guess it was worth it
Very nice. It is a billhook, the most important tool for hedgelaying. Thank you for sharing, it was fun to watch 🙂
Thanks for watching! Just found out about hedgelaying. Very interesting. Thank you for the info
Spending time to watch this is worth it. Good job man.
Glad you enjoyed it. New video out now
I love your restorations and beer tasting, I was in Belgium in 2019 and tasted that Leffe toilet water, I'm having an Old Speckled Hen Ale again.😂🍺
Absolutely beautiful!
You might want to restore that compass.
Nice restoration.
Personally I'm more a Leffe Brune man myself. Remarkable transformation though.
Hey Paul will have a look for this one. Thank you!
SWEET!!!
Really enjoying 👌
Glad to hear that you enjoyed it
