  • Thinking of buying and building your first RC car? Welcome to this video about the best RC Car Kits for beginners. I'm joined by my good friend, Rob of ‪@robbrennanrc‬ to explain the pros and cons of buying and building your first RC car kit. You may not be surprised that all the kits we recommend are from Tamiya. There are many reasons for this as we will explain, along with:
    A selection of affordable kits that we recommend
    A detailed look at each of our favourite beginner RC cars
    The pros and cons of hard and Lexan bodies
    What electronics you need to get a kit up and running
    How the electronics are connected together
    How to use the build manual
    Why the RC car hobby is such a great hobby to be involved in.
    So if you are new to the world of RC cars, I hope you find something of help in this video. But if you are already hooked on RC you still might (hopefully!) find this video interesting and entertaining!
    If you are a regular follower of the channel, I hope you stay tuned until the end for a smile or two!
    Best wishes to you all and happy RCing!
    The Tamiya RC Car Kits featured in this video are:
    Rising Fighter
    Grasshopper II Black Edition
    Lunch Box
    DT-02 Sand Viper
    DT-03 Racing Fighter
    TT-02B Plasma Edge II (also recommended is the TT-02B Neo Scorcher)
    TT-02 Subaru Impreza Monte Carlo 1999
    Note: All the RC cars shown in this video belong to our personal RC collections and are recommended only for ages 14 and above.

    Hi guys, I wish I'd seen this video back in 1982, if so I would have swerved getting the XR311 as my first RC - possibly the worst possible choice with it's airfix-like and highly fragile shell. In hindsight I'd have gone for the Sand Viper. Love the look of that one. But wow, I never knew the SV came with ball bearings as standard. I thought all the budget stuff came with plastic bushings. But yeah, a perfect guide for beginners from a couple of experienced RC veterans. A great point for me was pointing out that once you've built the kit, you'll know how to repair it. Spot on, as repairing these cars is almost a prerequisite to the hobby. It has to be tackled at some point. Great stuff boys...👍🏻😀👋.

      Hiya dude! Thank you for the fine comment, Sir! Oh yes, if only we knew then what we know now, but hey, that's how we learnt! At least we are in a position today to be able to pass on what we know. Coming from a teaching background, it gives me great pleasure to pass on what I have picked up over the years. Yes, the Sand Viper is a bit of a bargain, coming with oil shocks, adjustable top arms and full ball bearings. It's available at Time Tunnel Models for £109 if you fancy a bash! I appreciate your support and kind words. Take care, bud! :O)

I got two part epoxy to use to giue the body together and she can take some dogs abuse and keep coming back for more, I can't help meself, I just love it to bits, literally, lol. Sorry I had to give me tuppnce worth .😎👍👍👍🇬🇧

    Great video fellas. I did the DT03 first and would recommend it based on build, body and great to drive. Then I took apart my original 85 hornet to clean it all up and rebuild and add modern ESC, receiver etc. First on road car was the TT02 which again is a good starting car. After that I added all sorts of hop ups like ball diff, carbon shock towers and sway bars to DT03. Then on TT02 sealed gear diffs, high speed spur gear set and oil shocks. I had no dramas building the mechanical and electrical components but the body work can be fiddly and you need patience. I have since built a Top Force, Frog, XV-01, M05, M08, TB04R which all are unique and great to build and modify

    My first Tamiya RC was the TT02B Plasma Edge kit, added bearings and 3d printed my own parts for the a-arms/wishbones to modify the wheelbase and ride height as well as adding mounts to put a Sand Scorcher shell on it, initially ran it in a buggy config, ie same width, larger tires.
    Since then ive changed it up and remixed/printed shorter a-arms/wishbones so it now has the same width as a Sand Scorcher, ive also printed rims to fit paddle wheel all way round so its pretty similar to a TT02 rally car but with Scorcher paddles and body.
    Got paint on the body the other day and gotta do up the the lights, wipers, windows and driver and it will be done.
    Ive enjoyed the builds immensely so ive started a bit of a fleet which now contains:
    a Terra Scorcher, had the Terra Scorche JR as a kid so when i saw it was actually a RC version around i picked it up straight away.
    A "SandHopper "(Grasshopper with Scorcher shell and 3d printed ORV like swing arms rear+double wishbone fronts).
    A "Scorched DT02" (Nissan Titan with modified wheelbase+width and fitted Scorcher shell.)
    A "BeetleBox" (Lunchbox chassi with the stock gearbox modified to have ORV style swing arms, extended wheelbase, double wishbones up front and yet another Scorcher shell.).
    As well as a car im calling Vanessas Leftovers which is a 3d printed chassi utilizing the body left over from the Lunchbox, pogo sticks+380 motor from the Grasshopper, custom gearbox with ORV like swings on the back, double wishbones up front.
    Love the Tamiya cars.

    Great video! I would highly recommend this to everybody who wants to get into classic RC, where you have to build your models by yourself. From all the cars shown, me personally would prefer the Sand Viper for a beginner. It has all the hob ups you need (oil shocks and ball bearings) and all you have to do, is to buy one can of yellow and blow all over the body and wing, no masking has to be done. If I am not wrong the decals are precut, which helps a lot. And the DT-02 handles really well in my opinion.

I see that Time Tunnel Models has them in stock for £112 - such a bargain! Good point about the painting, too. Thanks again and all the best, my friend! :O)

    Hoorah the dynamic duo are back! I really enjoyed that guys. I hope some actual newbies find this video because the way the CZcams algorithm works it will show it to people who already like your stuff and they are mostly RC fans of many years. I'm sure you will get some new fans from this. Anyway when I saw the title my immediate thought was DT-02, DT-03 and Lunchbox. The other ones are also a good shout as they are reasonable money and fairly easy to build. Gavin at RC Kicks was recommending an XV-01 for a beginner and I'm thinking no way is that a suitable first kit although it is really nice. I think that Tamiya ought to employ you guys as brand ambassadors with all the recommendations of their products. Hope you are continuing to enjoy all the free time mate. Cool that you chose some of the kits we included, great minds think alike! I did see Gavin's video and was surprised to see the XV01 and that extremely trick Lancia body. well, as i build my first car - a Tamiya Porsche 996 with a M-04L chassis - i had fun with that. i know, that it somewhere might be... but now, i've had a TT-02. there's one thing, what i want to mention - and you might have forgot:
    at the last both pages of the instructions, there's a oversight of the screws, parts etc. who are in some "steps" - and that the bags (in that point, i don't remember if that was there for M-04L, but i've seen that for the TT-02) with them it it are "labeled" aswell - With "A, B and C - and so are also the plastic parts, who even had a number - so that you take the correct part. While My M-04L wasn't even tuned - the only thing i got was a ESC, 'cause it were shipped with a "manual" speed regulator (like every Tamiya kits to these days) - my TT-02 got a few hop-up parts, and a few more will arrive soon, even i've never had driven it since build - 'cause i need a body, and that might be sitting on my "old" M-04L (the body was for a TL-01, abd was way to big for the M-04L - but it will surely fit the TT-02.
    I especially recommend to look for kits, who are sold with ball bearings - 'cause that will improve the most, even before a better motor, aluminuim-parts or even oil-shocks (the oil shcocks are even a nice upgrade, especially you can get them with the ball bearings as a "tuning Kit" for the tt-02) - and these are sometimes better to use directly at the build instead of "replacing" them later. but: if you want to "do more", maybe consider to look what you want to do - before ordering randomly every hop-up part or part out of aluminium you can get. some parts - like the oil shocks or the ball bearings - are always a good option, while others might not... you can also "do it" lik i have done - ordering a few hop-up parts and build the kit first, when you have it.

      Good point about the manuals, they are very well layed out and are easy to follow.
      That's the beauty of the TT02, so many hop-ups and upgrades are available. Such a great chassis.
      Yes, all of my kits have ball bearings installed, they are very cheap to buy as hop-up sets. The Tamiya own brand are very expensive though so I shop on ebay. Good idea to hop-up when you can afford new parts, too! All the best from Mark...

I like it but I think I want to go buggy for my next build. Really torn on the racing fighter and the plasma edge 2. They both are appealing for different reasons. If you could only have 1 which would pick? I would get both but that is not in the cards right now lol.

      Hi there! Glad you think we're funny! Yeah, when you get to our age it's easy to forget stuff! Anyway, both buggies are great and as you say, for different reasons. For the fun factor alone, I'd go with the Racing Fighter. It's a bit faster and is a blast to drive, a little trickier than the TT02B to handle but awesome when you get the hang of it. But either one you pick, I don't think you'd be disappointed! Cheers! :))

    Hi thanks for making this video it’s been a great help. I’ve had RC cars on and off for years. My very first was a Manta ray which is like to get another of one day but I don’t think they make them anymore. I also have a rising storm again I’m not sure they make those either.
    I have a couple questions I’m looking for a 4wd buggy that I can build for speed runs could you suggest one pls I’m looking for one that will have lots of hip up parts Also available. I like the look of the dark impact just so you have an idea. What motor and esc would you recommend for a buggy (1/10) to get good speeds?
    Secondly I have a wltoys 1/12 buggy 124019 it’s the purple one but I need spares and was told these cars are copies of a more expensive make car any ideas what that is so I can try look for parts etc?
    Regards paul

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  Před rokem +1

      Hi and thanks for the comment and questions!
      The buggy I'd recommend is the TT-02B neo scorcher or plasma edge. They are much cheaper than the DF03 dark impact and there are tons more spares available and hop-ups too. If you want to go fast you will need to look for a brushless combo, 4000kv and above. Search on eBay. This one has great reviews and my friend uses them:
      Absima 2120002 1:10 RC Car Brushless Combo Set Thrust BL ECO
      As for the WLToys buggy, there are tons of spares available on Banggood and AliExpress.
      Best wishes from Mark...

      @@MarkBryanRC thanks so much for they reply that’s awesome I’ll look into those kits then. I definitely would look at getting metal shocks like in yours.
      Do you recommend a certain weight oil if the car is going faster?
      Thanks once again I’ll check out all those thing later. Much appreciated.

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  Před rokem +1

      No worries my friend. The weight of oil really depends on the type of shocks you have and the size of the holes in the pistons - it's really a matter of trial and error! If your car bounces too much, put thicker oil in or smaller holes in the pistons. #600 oil is a good starting point. Have fun with your RC's! :))

    Hi guys. I'd like to mention that I have a Rising Fighter and it's for one of my kids. It's a great little buggy but it's very limited. A serious issue is the flimsy little steering arms, they can't survive the slightest knock or jump without bending out of shape. I just can't recommend any of the "hoppers" as a first car if you intend on running it regularly. I'd go with one of the more modern DT-01, DT-02 or DT-03 models.

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  Před rokem

      Hi and thanks for the comment. You make a very good point about the Hoppers and I'm sure many others feel the same, but my experience is different. My Rising Fighter has had some serious abuse and I've bent the steering rod once and just bent it back with my fingers. Other than that it keeps soldiering on! Maybe I'm just lucky! But for sure, if you have a bit more cash to spend, the DT series gets my vote, too! I did say the DT03 was my favourite. Cheers!

    Hi Rob n Mark
    Which rally chassis would be a better beginner chassis a xv01 or a tt02 ? And is it possible to get a tt02 as good as a xv01.

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  Před rokem

      Hi Alex. If you've never built an RC chassis before, I'd go for the TT02, it's quite a straightforward build.
      However, if you are good with your hands and have done work with a screwdriver before, the XV01 should be doable. But with the oil diffs and belt drive there is a lot more that could go wrong as it's easy to make mistakes.
      It is possible to get a TT02 close to the XV01, I have a playlist of my TT02 vs XV01 that shows what we did to the TT02 here: czcams.com/video/OJk7yJfnX-M/video.html

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  Před 2 lety

      Hi and thanks for the comment 👍 The Dark Impact is a more complicated build than those in this video but if you are confident you should be OK 👍 The ball diffs are a bit tricky though! All is good in the kit but the stock motor is a bit slow so I would recommend a motor upgrade. Enjoy the build! 😀👍

    Hi Mark! I just bought my very first kit, wich is Tamiya TT-02 Subaru Monte Carlo. I watched some of Your videos, and will watch again while i will be building the kit, very helpfull, gave some understanding about RC. But im still struggle with one thing, i have no idea what kind of Servo i need for that kit. There is So many different ones, And such a big price range. Could You be So kind and recommend me one specific for that kit. Thanks in advance.

      Hi there! You got a fantastic first kit, I really enjoy my TT02 Subaru! Thanks for watching my videos, I'm pleased that you found theme useful!
      Yes, there are so many servos to choose from, it can be very confusing. My advice is to use a cheap standard servo, there is no need for an expensive or high-torque servo in this chassis, I tend to use the following servo:
      Radient RS-BS201-PG standard 5Kg analog BB servo.
      It's only about £7 in the UK. If you can't find one available just look for something with a similar specification.
      All the best and I hope you enjoy your first build! Cheers!
