Fish odor syndrome is a rare condition in which the body’s metabolic processes fail to break down the chemical compound trimethylamine, notable for its pungent odor.
• Trimethylamine has been described as an unpleasant strong fishy smelling compound.
• When the normal metabolic process fails, trimethylamine accumulates in the body and is excreted in the urine, sweat, and breath.
• The intensity of the odor may vary over time.
• The condition is more prevalent in women than in men.
• The consequences of emitting a foul odor can be socially and psychologically damaging as it can interfere with many aspects of daily life’s affecting a person’s relationships, social life, and career, leading to other problems such as depression and isolation.
CAUSES
Fish odor syndrome is caused by mutations in the FMO3 gene. This gene provides instruction for an enzyme that breaks down nitrogen-containing compounds from diets, including trimethylamine. Trimethylamine is produced by bacteria in the mammalian gut during digestion of proteins from eggs, liver, legumes (soybeans and peas), certain kind of fish, and other foods. Normally, the fishy-smelling trimethylamine is converted into trimethylamine N-oxide which has no odor. If the enzyme is missing or its activity is reduced as a result of a mutation in the FMO3 gene, trimethylamine is not processed properly and can build up in the body causing the odor associated with the condition. Experts believe that stress and diet can play a large role in triggering symptoms.
Most cases of fish odor syndrome appear to be inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern, which means that a person inherits two mutated genes, one from each parent. Most often, the parents of an individual with an autosomal recessive condition are each carrier of the mutated gene, meaning that each parent carries one copy of the mutated gene. Carriers of an FMO3 mutation may have mild symptoms or experience temporary episodes of strong body odor.

I have the same smell. I noticed it when l was 14yrs. I had my period and l smelled pop so I went back home and took my bath again and put some perfume but it worsen. I was in class when the hole room was stinky, smelling like pop. My friend made fun of me so l decided to quit school my mom didn’t believe me and she thought l didn’t want to go to school. I've known a few close female friends that smelled this way. I assumed they either didn't wash or they had an infection. I feel sooooo sorry for these women now. This is so terribly sad.

I was a very shy and nervous boy growing up. Around the age of thirteen I started noticing foul odors. Sometimes it smelled like rotten eggs and other times like decaying flesh. Unfortunately I never told anyone. I started missing school a lot and avoiding being around people as much as I could.
I lived the life of a recluse for approximately the next fifteen years. When I finally reached out for help I was diagnosed with a delusional disorder: somatic type and major social maladjustment.
It was an extremely stressful, depressing time in my life. I turned to smoking marijuana a lot and eventually consuming alcohol daily.
I only wish I could or would have opened up to someone about it much sooner. My problem could have been nipped in the bud and I wouldn't have suffered all those years.

I can relate to so many stories here.... this bad fishy period smell coming from my breath has been a great disturbance in my life... I had the same problem as that, it was a bit weird. Then I decided to leave the country for a warm country, the problem disappeared, which is weird, then once back in a cold country, it reappeared, it's quite strange.
This is what I'm experiencing now... there's a bad fishy smell from my breath... and whn I have not bathed yet it's very worse... ive tried so many things still looking for help.

I can’t smell myself but other people can I been living with this condition since 13 I’m 18 now and it’s only gotten worse and I know that it is only going to CONTINUE to get worse I know it’s not in my head because a couple of times in my life people have told me I smell like must, ass etc. NOTHING works. I’ve read comments and heard stories about people living with this condition and they said that their smell was so bad to where they’ve lost jobs, relationships etc. in my case the smell hasn’t been that bad to where that has occurred but I am at the stage to where when I walk in a room I can definitely tell that my smell feels the room and when I sit next to people they move away mind you in the beginning it wasn’t that bad i can tell the smell was manageable to where I could still live somewhat of a normal life but over time the smell has gotten stronger and it’s starting to really fuck with me mentally i have considered taking my life multiple times but never had the guts to do it I have went through serious depression and preferred to be alone most of the time luckily after doing years of research I’ve heard peoples Tmau was cured by “eating healthy” and etc seems like that is my only option left I do eat bad on a daily basis hell I work at a fast food restaurant eating healthy is my only option I have left because I’ve tried everything if this doesn’t work then their is no hope anymore and I shouldn’t exist

I have this same condition. Sometimes I feel like taking my life.
I guess I am screwed then as a male 50+ I only have one kidney so I guess I fall under the kidney disease umbrella. I lost one about 3yrs ago. I feel fine without any lower back pain as I know what it feels like. So I am hoping that this is mild and can be treated. I have begun a regime of natural products that were recommended, and will see my urologists to ensure that my other kidney is still intact and not failing and run some blood tests. I sure do hope it clears up.

I used this for a uti infection, but I stopped using it because I started getting this really bad odor that was coming from my body and sweat. The antibiotics smelled like rotten eggs, is this normal? I had to discontinue to use it. I started feeling so depressed after just taking them for for days . It’s like the smell of sulfur but I can also smell it throughout my body. Do you know why this happens?? I have feeling that when I was taking antibiotics it probably wiped out my good bacteria

Hate this is happening to yall but feels good to not be alone. I've tried many things and so far have only minimized how often the smell is called out. What do you guys think about taking metronidazole? I've taken that and the symtoms do go away for a bit.
If that works for ypu I suspect an infection, but of ot returns, another infection. Treat you and your partner.

@Shantell I've gone to the gynecologist many times to get tested and everything always comes back negative. So for some weird reason it takes the odor away for a short time. Then comes back. I have no infection of any kind. Everything always comes back normal. Blood work normal. No stds 🤷♀️. Very strange.
@Shantell no worries I didn't take it that way lol I was just saying that I'm aware it's for bv but there are plenty of people in our community that have taken this and it helped with odor for a while and then the tmau symtoms come back. At the moment what I'm doing is intermittent fasting in the morning to be able to work in the morning without the odor being too extreme. I eat when I get home after 3 or 4 and after eating I smell. Have you tried intermittent fasting? I feel you Shantel, I'm on the same boat. Until I started fasting last week..I feel it's my only hope to live a semi normal life in the morning.

I don’t know if I have this because I can’t smell my regular smell. With that being said, if I go a day with out a shower or if I’m sweaty, I do notice a mild smell, But not on my normal days.I think I actually smell pretty good.
I shower usually everyday or twice a day but I notice when I’m in public ppl cover their nose when I’m around or cough a lot, Sometimes I think I hear faint remarks of “ it stinks! “ I’m not sure if it’s in my head or if I really hear ppl saying this. I’ve asked my little sister if I smell bad, she said not really just like laundry detergent. So a few days later I went to my dads house and gave him my shirt and asked him to smell it to see if it’s dirty. He said “no it smells like you just washed it” but I notice he cover his nose when ever I’m around too, Everyone around me does.
I was dating this guy and one night I told him I couldn’t see him because I needed to shower but I was too tired. His response was “why? It’s not like you ever smell bad or anything.
A different guy who is like a neat freak, asked to do particular “things” that I know most guys wouldn’t Do if A girl smelled bad.
I have a doctors appointment coming up soon and I will have those test done, I hope my doctor will be honest and give me an answer and let me know if it’s all in my head or if I really have this medical condition. I will update .
UPDATE‼️
I went to the doctor twice and this time I scheduled a late appointment and took my shower early morning, I had blood work, urine test, breathing test, BV , YI test, and stool Test. We are going to do an a ultra sound next week, but this week All test came back negative. Again said she couldn’t smell anything. But I started a new job and I’m already getting reactions. So I’m going to get a new doctor to get a second opinion. Because I’m not getting any answers.
If you do a urine test for TMAU I suggest you eat a lot of high choline food so it can be accurate ☺️

I’m using activated charcoal and chlorophyll t9 camouflage the smell, I’m also careful what I eat, I make sure I’m not constipated because that makes the smell horrifically worse.

Bro go to the doctor. If you’re not circumcised it could be bacteria underneath, if you haven’t been pulling the skin all the way back and cleaning it well enough. Otherwise I would really consider seeing a doctor.

I’ve heard it could be histamine coming out of the body so a low fodmap diet helps. I know nettle tea says it helps with that as well. I’m currently taking oregano pills. Lemon water and ginger helps a lot
Also cut out food with high choline, dairy, things with soy lecithin, and amino acids in it also makes it worse

If you have the financial resources and/or health insurance, ask for a comprehensive stool analysis test to get a base line of your gut microbiome. It can test for toxic substances, pathogens, yeast overgrowth, etc. You may need to get it through a functional medicine doctor or go to walk in labs website to order.
I would eat organic whole foods and find out what foods trigger her or not. Also, don't forget to exercise and reduce stress.
