$20,000 MISTAKE!!! Bad DIY Waterproofing Job on a Tiled Shower Pan

- All too often homeowners don't take the proper steps when waterproofing their showers for tile installation. One missed step can lead to a catastrophic failure that requires the complete removal and replacement of the shower and plumbing.
Tile Redi pans eliminate the vulnerable failure points of other shower pan systems like Schluter Kerdi, RSS, Wedi, Hydroblock and Redgard. In those systems, the pan and wall connection is at or below the waterline of the shower and are often just connected in the field with sealant or thinset. Also, the drain is a separate piece and has to be secured to the pan with thinset or sealant. Installer error is common with these systems leading to catastrophic water and structural damage.
Tile Redi pans are one piece, pre-sloped, and have the drain integrated into the pan through the injection molding process. The integrated splash walls and curb make it so there are no connection points in the field at the vulnerable waterline.

***Update*** We are doing the full shower replacement starting Monday. I gave him $5000 off the price since he is letting us shoot video during the process. STAY TUNED!!!
I never thought id get into binge watching shower and bathroom teardown and repair videos, yet I think ive watched at least 30 to 40 hours of your videos now. Through lots of research and watching these videos, ive found what to avoid and what to do right with my bathroom im remodeling and currentlly completing the tiling for the shower I built. Love the content, Keep it up!
I call my wife in regularlly on these videos where you find the mastic and I start going off about how so many people use mastic in these videos and it drives me insane. The wealth of knowledge you provide is amazing.
Though I started using it on the advice from my father for severe elbow pain, glucosamine chondroitin with msm also relieved my lower back pain that I began having when I was about your age. Took about three weeks to build up in my system, but it worked so well that I now recommend it to all my friends. Wasn't the expensive stuff they advertise now, just a plain supplement from the 'superstore'. I'm now 62 and still working remodeling houses pain free.
Anyway, hope yours gets better and thanks for the great vids.
Cool, so he’s paying a fair price and you still get paid multiple ways from the project. Just be transparent, it’s obvious people think you are shower Jesus. Don’t abuse that by setting market prices for your industry
That is a really generous discount. 👍
With so many resources on shower remodels available on the internet for the past 10 years, yet we still get masterpieces like this 🤣
Mess-terpiece
Fucking unbelievable. I’m only 5 minutes in. 😂
What an absolute mess.
most people should not attempt to do it, even with DYI videos
In my experience remodeling my primary bathroom, it was not that I did not have the information to build a luxury shower but not having enough time to do it correctly.
Thank you homeowner for letting us DIY folks into your home.
Love to see the son helping out his old man. Get Buzz some more play!
Tile coach is a real master of the tile.
Nobody wants to save that. You're a good person Issac. That's for sure.
I still watch your videos even after learning from you and remodeling our master bathroom from the ground up over a year ago. Keep up the great learning channel.
Awesom video, and thank you Han for allowing the footage. Very very proactive video tile coach. I appreciate you
I've followed your videos to the "T" and I'm about 1 weekend away from completion.....
I hope my OCD pays off....
I'm a sheet metal guy, but know plenty of other trades and know the what not to do's.
Issacs videos are the best on CZcams and all the products have worked exactly as he explains.
Kind of wish I was one of his employees....if I wasn't a tinner LOL
The home owner seems like a humble guy even though he’s well off. Hope he chooses you to fix the shower so we can see the repair and end result!
No, a humble guy doesn’t attempt to hack job a $10k shower in a $25k bathroom. They realize it’s out of their scope. To DIY this is a unique form of arrogance imo
@@zookini That is nowhere near the definition of being humble.
Buzz did great! Good commentary about the moldy frosted flakes scented pan
Brutal. Breathing in that mold and describing it. Haha. Isaac, you are doing us all a solid. Cheers brother.
Mastic mold is wild. I've ran into it a few times and damn, what a stench. I'm pretty confident you personally could cut that clean ~8" up all the way around. The risk would obviously be the removal considering natural stone can be very fragile. If you did manage to get it out, you could cut the strips into triangles or squares for resetting with a design. At that point, it's no different than other small format tiles meeting tubs or shower pans. Love the vids sir.
Nice solution, I hate to think of all of that marble going to waste.
That ending brought so much light to my heart
Thanks for filming the interaction and rough estimate with the owner. Really insightful info
Nice guy! It's interesting how people have a go and it turns out that way. Massive respect for owning up to it. Mr Tile Coach well done for not making fun of him he had a go. I have seen many jobs with DIY 'ers and they would put some professionals to shame. This is not the case this time. Part of learning is to admit your work is wrong and let someone who knows what they are doing have a go and maybe learn from them.
I did mine myself, but I researched it for a year or so,
Bud did good on camera. I have watched many of your videos. I used RSS Pro system. All good so far. Has been a few months. Thanks for the instruction.
I love watching your video's, your content is so informative and I have learn so much from you when I did my first shower demo and rebuild.
Did tile for 40 years. As soon as I saw the signs of water soaking up at the base of the wall, I knew there would be a nightmare under the floor and a total tear out and redo of the entire shower. The fact that they used mastic in a shower pan is comical. I'm an old school mud guy and also hot mopped pans. The new systems they use now days might meet building codes and be easier and cheaper, but still can't beat the old school hot mopped pan and floated shower walls.
Great learning experience, keep the videos coming thank you
Thank you Han!!!
Good camera work, keep him.
He will get even better.
My son started with photography as a 16 year old.
Has worked professionally for decades.😊
Nice guy. Had no business putting a shower together. Nice job with the camera Buzz!
Sooner or later we all will turn into Starr Tile type of an investigators. 🤣 I am suuuuuper curious if you got the job Isaac and we'll get to see part two of this marvel? Thanks for sharing TC. We ❤ you back.
Good video guys i always learn something new about tile & zhower pans & your son did awesome job on being the camera man ! Yal stay safe i hope yal get this job i like to see it demo & rebuild !
Daniel from central Mississippi
Buzz was great, both of you come to Florida and redo my bathroom 😃
Love your stuff. Been in home improvement sales for about 6 years. Climbed the ladder to regional director of a large company. Have you ever considered doing a sit down sales pitch after you inspect a shower like this? I think you could close a lot of customers same day.
We purchased a home that a custom home builder built for his family, the guy put a lot of time and money in extras and details. BUT, his choice on tile contractor is questionable! We purchase the house when it was 11 years old, 3 years after purchasing, the large shower was leaking. I had a crew come in to demo all shower, tile floor, tile tub surround. And there it was, the pan liner was cut in all 4 corners, nails through liner right above pan and of course, roofing nails in the curb!
I am not a tile guy but my background being 30 years as an electrical contractor with 21+ years as electrical, mechanical and architectural engineer, I have run across many good contractors but have also run across so many idiots. I was hesitant on hiring a tile contractor to build another shower pan and install tile. After much research a couple years ago, I ordered a Tile-Redi custom size shower pan, installed it myself. What a piece of mind having that shower pan. The pan is very well built, and solid once installed. I believe in those pans to the point that I have another hotel to start designing this Fall, 210 rooms with all rooms having large showers. Probably going to spec Tile-Redi shower pans instead of site-built pans.
Shoot me an email info@tilecoach.com if you have any questions on it.
And let me guess, that tile guy is going around saying "I've been doing it this way for 40 years and never had a problem"
If this guy wanted to make every mistake possible, he freakin knocked it out of the park.
If it’s disc spacing for your back use an inversion table. Works great and definitely lessons most of the nerve pain.
It’s nice for stretching and something I use with my PT clients. But when we are talking real nerve impingement, you need a proper decompression table that you strap into and get pulled mechanically.
Additionally, it’s vital to protect lordosis the time; sitting, standing, moving and working. Meaning you sit with a proper lumbar pillow, you sleep with a proper sleeping lumbar pillow, and you move in ways using a straight back.
This will solve most cases of nerve impingement from anterior bulges and full herniations of the vertebrae.
Look into the McKenzie method of therapy and it might change your life (to anyone who reads this)
I could have done half the price. Easily.
You are correct in your assessment.
The entire bathroom did not “have” to be torn out

Dang poor dude just trying to have a nice shower bummer hopefully you get the job and build something wonderful
I’m hooked bud i subscribed before the video was even over 🤙🏼
Well I always say might as well give it a go and if it fails then try it again. Sometimes you may over spend for the project but at least it’s done correctly.
I would find a way to save that. 100%or not, if I were in his shoes, I wouldn't want to rip out the stone. No system guarantees that, but get a membrane 4 inches up that stone, yes in front of it. Cover it with a marble baseboard. Yes, there`s a nice marble baseboard that people use in bathrooms. That would probably not be code but it would save him 20k. It's worth trying IMO.
As for someone that also does tile for a living, as soon as you popped that first tile I literally said out loud, Oh don't tell me he used mastic 😬
I am a DIYer and said the same thing.
I am a 35 year tile setter from the Bay Area. That is probably the worst shower pan set I have ever seen…that can not be fixed…it’s a tear out for sure…
Tile redi is legit. The banding never looked good even before you did the multiple test on the different brands of waterproof sealers. The old school EPDM shower liners you use still look like they'll outlive any of the banding systems.
I like the cut the bottom and insert another tile . Go with a purposeful difference.
My first shower I made the thinset mistake. Even worse used a full bucket to build up the shower seat. What a mess.
Love the forester! And from Autonation! Woot woot
Great job on camera
Free demo turns into $17k shower quote 😂
Who said it's free? He charged for a demo for sure. If his quote is 17k-20k, then he is definitely not gonna show up for the demo for free.
@@sunfish8286 its content
@@sunfish8286 I’m not surprised by your wrong opinion. It’s content. The demo is normally part of the shower job. The next contractor should be weary seeing a pre demo’d shower.
@@zookini I am not surprised by your wrong opinion. As a contractor myself, I would never demo someone else's shower for free and without agreeing on the price of the full shower remodel before starting any work. You telling me that Issac is such an angel that he spends most of his time doing demo for someone for free and then doesnt get hired cause in his area there so many other tile guys? OK, I got you sir
@@sunfish8286 you don’t have a monetized CZcams channel.
He does, that’s why he demos for content
Hey, I recognize that house. That's right down the street from me. Lol
Han is a good sport about that situation.
Super duper hack job.
Lower back issues have been my thing lately.
Everyone knows I’m in over my head over my head ! 8 seconds left in tile time it’s on your mind the mastics in your miiiind!!! 😮
Nice video buzz need to zoom in a littel bit overal goed filming ❤gretings from the netherlands 🇳🇱
Your son did incredible.
20 grand for that shower is crazy. ive been building entire bathrooms for just 6k labor.
I would still cut out the bottom 4"-6" of the marble and fill with tile (after doing proper waterproofing) for a baseboard effect. Go full Bob Ross, if you have to. If the wall plumbing needs fixing or replacing, do it from the other side of the wall. Redoing drywall will be way cheaper and easier than redoing the marble.
Buzz did a great job.
I’d never use mastic. Love GoBoard!
Lol that looks like rtv the oil pan gasket stuff for your car engine 😂
That’s one place homeowners shouldn’t try and save a dime. Imagine what that all cost and his time then add 20K to that to redo it all. Thats a beautiful car or rock for the wife.
Help. I got a delta shower pan 60x32 and planning to tile. The flange has a lip on the top. I’m thinking I got the wrong type of shower pan. Do I get one with a straight flange or cut the lip off. If I cut the lip off the flange will only be 1”. If I got the wrong pan what brand would you recommend from Home Depot. Thanks for any suggestions.
With even the ultimate pros going to Tile Redi, DIYer have to stick to acrylic pans or Tile Redi, no complex membrane pans. That's my policy anyways. I had never had a leak in 30 years and 5 bathroom projects, but I bet I'd have had a failure with a complex schluter pan or similar just due to inadequate skill.
I wonder if you can leave the marble and do tile redi in front of it. Then waterproof the seam and use marble sills to cover that portion. Do marble hexagon on the pan. Would save a ton if money. Also, use a good sealer over all the marble.
Buzz did great!
The homeowner seems like a nice and honest guy tho! But the work... I can't even. Mind blowing horrible floor and then top of the line walls, how did those two finishes even meet? Craziness!!
If he is a do it yourself, I wonder if he is also a “handyman” who has done jobs on other homeowners.
My guess? Homeowner did everything BUT had someone come out and measure/install the marble on top of his mess.
@@fd3871he said the walls were done first and then he did the floor. And he said “ I did” not “ I had it done”.. so maybe he tried his hand at it..
@@richeyrich2203They’re probably attached with duct tape
@@richeyrich2203 not sure we can trust a man who uses mastic as an adhesive in a wet area 🤣
The lower back thing sucks big time. All I can say, as someone who's struggled with that, is unconventional workouts are your friend. My last run in with muscle spasms down there ended after I tagged along with my wife to one of her barre classes out of curiosity (think yoga crossed with karma sutra lol). I'm pretty fit so it wasn't a work out in the strict sense...but I immediately isolated exactly where my tension/inflamation was actually coming from, which physical therapy, my doctor, and MRI etc had totally failed to do. I had it beaten back in about 2 weeks from exactly then, and only because I actually knew what I had to focus on. My ins co really probably should have sent that bougie all girls work out class a check lol.
Lower back issues. I'm 65 and your a spring chicken. Working with my son also, it's great teaching him but I'm still dad.😂 He's a teenager
I used to work for a tile guy for many years and we’d have to pre slop with dry pack and put rubber pans down then float it with mud.. We wouldn’t use fiberglass ones..
A great mold treatment is RMR-86 Pro Instant Mold Stain & Mildew Stain Remover
@ 0:06 when you know it's a total gut job.
@ 0:30 when you are 100% sure it's a total gut job.
The info and materials are out there, why,,,just why??? Such a nice home too.
Best way to prevent back issues is to work on your abs, which are stabilising.
Water will evaoprate from the trap in a sink or shower that hasn't been used for a significant amount of time, and that would allow sewer gases to enter the dwelling.
Rich guy was just trying to have some fun. He’s got three other showers so no big deal.
He was trying to save his money and that's why he is rich.
In all the YT videos I've seen, I have never seen the use of mastic for shower pans.😮
Buzz was Great!!!!!!
I don't understand why people use thinset to adhere strips of sheet membrane around the edges and corners, knowing that thinset wicks water right under the membrane. I prefer using liquid membrane to hold the strips and then another coat over the sheet membrane.
😂 mans said liquid nails 😂😂😂😂 ohhh yea that’s what ya want to grout your shower floor with doken liquid nailers! 😂
Everything has to come out
But the guy at Home Depot said to use mastic and that he uses mastic in showers all the time....
Are you implying in the video that all sheet membranes will leak at the seams eventually, even if they are applied correctly?
Mastic cures behind porcelain. Just never supposed to go over 18” on any tile with mastic. I would use mastic all day long on a porcelain tile backsplash.
20K yikes....wish they paid that down here in FL.
Buzz did a good job.
As soon as I saw the white, I knew it was mastic 🤦🏽♀️
I'm still not convinced of these fabric pans. I'll stick to the solid rubber membrane. Do it right and never touch it again.
I do estimate for a Customer for 3 bathrooms laundry and entry lake 100 sf 1 custom pan for 19,000 and she said is expensive I live in Colorado just labor and Materials
He may not have a -trap. It looks like a slab foundation, not sure and he may not have wanted to properly dig out concrete so that way pipe may grade 1/4” per foot. Gases from sewage is also dangerous to health. He may have also placed mastic on walls. Those walls need to be removed.
WOW @ intro b roll.
Wow
Got to ask, has any homeowner ever called you out for a repair, you do your inspection and then they tell you it's your fault and to pay for all of it?
I'm sure that's a big reason for the video. There's no denying what it looked like upfront and he explained on video before he started that he would have to take up some of it to see what was going on. The homeowner acknowledged it and shook hands.
They must have messed up the cut for the valve too…they used a remodel plate to cover something
Man I bought the kerdi system because I learned about it here a few years ago. Now I'm scared to death to install it lol. You seem to have really flip flopped on those systems.
Oh no not the yellow stuff !? 😮 Mr Han pissin n shittin in Shiawah! 😮
Can you give bluemax a water proof test?
Stabbed marble was the thing that hurt. The rest of it wouldn't be that much of a big deal to replace
Actually not the worst DIY job. The guy had all of the elements there (aside from the mastic), he just fell short on the execution. Ive seen cement board "mud beds" nailed through shower pan membranes on multiple tear outs.
You wouldn't happen to be located in socal would you?
He’s in northern Cal. Sacramento??
not the best sales man
but an amazing tile guy
i’ve learned alot from you but you got to close this clients down he was so ready to buy but you weren’t so confident
They should just honestly stop selling mastic. So many mistakes out there with improper use. I don’t even use mastic for backsplashes lol (my go to is Laticrete Tri-lite or Mapei Pro-lite mortar).
It looks like he laid the floor tile on a pile of toothpaste
Watch out for your back bro, make sure it’s not a herniated disc, if you work it too bad it can become prolapsed and tear, and that pain will make the manliest man scream like a little girl. Just know if you start getting a pain / tug in your leg, it’s your back and you should go to the doctor. When it’s too bad you need emergency surgery, so be careful.
12 Days? I know it’s a lot of work but I was thinking 4 days tops ….1 day for tear out and 2 days for tile and pan and 1 day for fine touches. Am I crazy?
12 days is about right, he will also have to do mold remediation, and possibly replace wall studs or the bottom plate.
You must be watching too much HGTV….
That yellow stuff you're looking at is PVC glue by the looks of it
Sorry abs glue
I really don’t know why mastic is still made and used. Why not just use thinset……makes more sense imo
You were so gung ho about RSS, I started using their stuff and I used it in my second floor showers as well as about 8 other homes. Now I’m worried trust I screwed up.
I can smell it.
