Very cool HB. Glad to hear the videos have been helpful. The reason I started the channel was exactly because a guy like you wouldn’t have a source for how to go about shooting these guns. If you have any questions along the way just ask. Thanks and enjoy. You made a great choice in the .32 SMR. Just an extra bit of info, if you want you can do what I did and buy an extra barrel in, say, .45 cal and swap it out in just a few minutes giving you two guns in one. 👍🏻

@@BlackPowderTV Love the looks of your Kibler SMR . I have one coming in .40 in the next week or so. I've a question about the finish. All wood is different, I know, but how did you get the light almost honey color with the black end grain contrast using aqua fortis? So beautiful. It seems to usually turn out more of a shade of red from what I've seen. Thanks!

Beautiful rifle can’t wait to get mine! I ordered a 36. I have some other flintlock rifles Pennsylvania styles was wondering why many of the Southern Rifles are built using the smaller caliber. As time goes by they seem to get heavier. Those smaller cal flintlocks must be a joy to shoot being so slender. Despite knowing better I’m thinking I’ll let my wife try it; motive behind that there may be an opportunity for another.

Jim will also build one "in the white" if you want one are not ready for a kit, comes fully built and ready to shoot you just do a tiny bit of sanding, stain the stock and do what ever you want (if anything to the barrel) and you are ready to go. I was lucky enough to have Jim completely make and finish mine. it is our family "heirloom" rifle to be passed along from generation to generation. if you are ready for a fine flintlock without huge cost but want the finest material look at these.

Wow that thing is beautiful. As a guy that’s never built a kit and is of average mechanical skill, would you say that kit would be something the average guy could do? Makes me nervous to drop a grand and possibly be disappointed haha. Always wanted a beautiful rifle like that though. Really enjoying this channel!

    Couple of questions.
    1) I’ve seen the video on shooting a southern rifle about where you place the buttstock. Is it still comfortable to shoot and would a larger caliber, says 50
still be comfortable with the stock held against the top of the bicep?
    2) any idea the gun maker’s philosophy on using this design?
    Thanks

The buttplate was designed that way because a certain type of European offhand competition was popular in the south pre Civil War and the stance that went with that style was crossbody which is difficult to mount on your shoulder. It is a very stable way to shoot smaller caliber offhand which was ideal for the small game hunting that was a staple in the south. This type of buttplate and shooting was also popular in Ohio and Kentucky as can be seen in their buttplate styles in the period. .50 cal is the largest caliber I’d want to shoot this way. .45 is fine, .32-40 is perfect. Something like .58 would likely hurt.

Beautiful wood, almost golden in the light areas. How did you make the lines in the cheek piece?

Russell Brill Thanks! It took me 50 hours or so to finish mine. Lots of small stuff. Go to the American Longrifles Forum and share some pics when you finish it!

All of my rifles are bigger bore (58-62), thinking I need something a bit smaller now, but large enough I can still use it for deer if I want. Been looking at the Kibler SMR, just trying to decide between 40 or 45. Hope you are doing well.

Doing good. For deer I’d stick with .45 minimum. It’s plenty but I think a .40 might bone deflect too much. 👍🏻

That is one very pretty rifle..... Do those sight shades make a difference? I would imagine if the light was from one side it would be useful....

They work very well, especially at an uncovered range when you get a glare on the front blade and on a squirrel gun when most of my shots are more vertical and the glare will be different each shot. It’s not a huge difference but my groups are tighter on a sunny day in those scenarios. 👍🏻

Really like the steel patina. How is this done?

I either use Laurel Mountain Forge Browning solution or a Fast Bluing and rub it back to grey each application with maroon scotchbrite until it gets to where I like the look. You can also use something like Kibler’s Longrifles brass black but it’s not as tough a patina. 👍🏻 If you use the browning solution you can let it go longer each application to get slight pitting. I used the LMF browning on this gun.
