I once watched two guys shooting skeet with double barrel, cap locks . Has to be the slowest round of skeet ever ! It was fun to watch though ! They did hit a few a peace !
I think the stress of doing the whole video live is causing you to feel you have to rush your shots. If you relax and take your time and edit out the reloading it might be easier on you. You have a great channel and I learn alot. Semper Fi

Used to go to friendship every year - usually 3-4 times - bill large was my mentor rip - when he passed I kinda quit - shoot .22lr. Factory and heavy bench now - still have a .36 flinter built from scratch but never shot - it’s great to c u on here showing us old folks u can teach an old dog new tricks 👍

Brian is an awesome builder. I’ve got several of his accoutrements, including several powder measures. I’m trying to get one of his guns and one of his 18th century folding knives. He’s a genius.
I have used greased patches for decades. My favorite is mutton tallow but that is hard to come by so I stretch it out with 1/3 to 50% lard. If I can't get the tallow I'll use straight lard but haven't run into that problem yet. I use a generous portion, saturating a long strip of pillow ticking with the melted lube, squeezing out the excess ,& rolling up the strip to cut to size during loading.
(This next step is crucial especially if you're shooting numerous shots like in a match.)
Keep a cleaning patch on your loading rod. Use the same patch till it finally gives up then replace it. This wipes the bore as you load maintaining a constant bore condition where it really counts in front of the ball for consistent accuracy. If you wipe between shots before loading you're pushing a good deal of the fouling down possibly clogging your ignition passage. I can shoot all day long with this procedure without any cleaning. I used to shoot 2 cases of powder a year for about 15 years. I use somewhat less the past ten years or so & most of that was with the same 54 caliber custom Hawken rifle with 90 grains Goex of 2F . I think that's a lot of shooting by anyone's measure. That load & technique produces ragged hole 5 shot groups a @ 50 yards If I do my part. Hope this is helpful Give it a try & see how it works for you.

I can say one thing for sure and certain....you are getting fast and consistent firing with a flintlock. I know how to get it too, but I see many on You Tube who do not. Might need to explain that to them in your video.
good video Bob! I use to use swiss, it is an accurate powder, but it can be aggravating! on my 40cal gun after about 6 shots it develops a hard ring about an inch or two before the ball seats. I found that ole eynsford goex you get the best of both worlds. it is super accurate in my guns and I can shoot all I want without wiping the bore. I have swiss I will never use,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Hello. Wondering if you might give some advice. I'm 50 year old that has hunted and shot and fooled all types firearms. Always wanted a decent flintlock rifle. Had a junky one years back. For a decent kit rifle whom or what brand name would you suggest ? Mainly target and deer hunt thinking 45 cal?? Thanks
I just wonder if a thirty grain load may have solved the shooting high issue. But as you said, you want a load that will work up to coyote size varmints, so what you are doing with the sight pictures works. Good video and I like that rifle.
Yes, I’ve got to do a bit of load development on the rifle. Shoots great as I loaded it but It’ll get a bit of fiddling with in the coming weeks. I usually shoot a smaller load in a .36. 25-30g for squirrel and Jack did sight it in with a smaller charge. We’ll see. Thanks US!

Have you ever thought of getting a a spotting glass.It would save you a lot of running.
The first thing is reading your shot patches. Too thin will be spotty contact. Too thick, it burns out the center. Then, use the starting load after you have the correct ball and patch. Then, increase 5 grains until max load. Pick the best load for what you're doing. Deer hunting, you want to trade a little accuracy for some more speed. Squirrels, you need more accuracy.
Just ordered a inline but kind of wishing i had ordered a flint lock kit. Maybe I'll order a kit after I get comfortable with the inline. For some reason I thought flintlock was more complicated and slower from trigger to boom.
They can be slower but a well timed one is very fast.

Not really Gordon, the nice thing about doing it this way, aside from slipping the patching up the strap as it gets short is that you can just tuck it in the bag if you're going to, say, sit under a squirrel tree for a few hours, where there's the possibility of it laying on the ground. I often start out the day, loading and then tucking the end in the bag, letting it hang out for shooting from the pouch at the range or hunting, like for squirrels, where I need to reload often. Thanks! I like a .36 if my target may be any larger varmint up to a Coyote, but for very small game only, the .32 is pretty hard to beat! Getting those tiny little balls loaded is the only downside if you're a fumblefingers!

I've never hunted squirrels with black powder. Always used my grandfathers 22 with shorts. Works great for a rifle built around 1934.
Since I’m just a month or two out from my .36 TVM Iron PA being finished what would you consider the MINIMUM charge to use?
For squirrels or targets about 20-25y I’d start with 15g 3f or 20g 2f and go up to perhaps 50g for 50y targets or varmint hunting. There should be a tightest group on the low end and one on the high end. 👍🏻
Do you have a .45 caliber flint lock and if so do you like the .45 caliber ??
I do and I love it. It's not as flat shooting as a .40 but hits the gong harder. Great all around caliber.
Ever try maxi ball? I shoot a 32 cal. Got both roundball and maxi ball molds.

Squirrels are in trouble now. Squirrel doesn't come in until Sept. up here. That lube appears to be pretty good. You didn't wipe once and it looked like she loaded easy.

Somewhere between 15 and 40g depending on what your doing. Paper at 20 yards and squirrels can be really low and longer range and varmint type hunting can go as high as 40g or so. There will be a lower and higher grain charge in there somewhere that will give you the best accuracy.

Hey James, I haven’t for some time. I’ve done a few and it eases loading a bit but I’ve had it hurt the accuracy of one gun so I stopped. I’d say done right it is probably not a bad thing to do but you have to be careful to do it perfectly.
I've been putting off shooting my pedersoli pennsylvania .45 cal. Because I can't buy ffff in illinois (ready to go for it )
3f is fine too for priming. It won't be as fast but we're talking thousandths of a second so you're good!

I am from Western North Carolina the old ones told us to put a piece of wasp or hornet nest between the patch and the powder for better shooting
Wasp nest and folded green leaves were commonly used in the period. I’ve shot lots of it and find it a lot of fun to do things the way or ancestors did. You don’t get the higher pressures of wads but it works fine. Great comment. Thanks!

I used to build rifles.Got a lot of help from the late Ron Ehlert from Duck Water TN. and bought a rifle from another fellow in TN. but I am having a senior moment so I can't recall.
When cleaning the barrel, do you take it off the stock? I've done this with my Lyman since I owned it.
I do Bob. Not each time but fairly regularly. I made a video of how I do it with a pinned longrifle.

I've always taken my Lyman barrel out to clean it so that water stayed away from the wood. It's a lot easier than your squirrel rifle to do that.
I'm getting more and more excited about getting back into the powder hobby again.

Hitting the ball with the starter, does that deform the ball?
DocLaw It does a bit yes. I lost my .36 starter, so I improvised. Seemed to work fine but the groups may have been tighter with a proper starter. I’d be more worried about the effects out past 50y. Not much effect at squirrel distance. Thanks!

Simplify brother you're shooting good. But my question is running back and forth the way you do you're raising your heart rate not good when you're sighting in I suggest a purple binoculars keep that heart rate down you learn that in the Marine Corps just like I did I love your CZcams page
Great video, very entertaining and informative, I just hope you miss when shooting a squirrel 🐿, they are so much fun to see. I do see hunting as a survival skill but killing for fun is cruel. Squirrels tend to forget around 10% of the nuts that they bury and is estimated that squirrels plant millions of trees each year in North America alone, they are nature’s true foresters. I wonder how many trees do their executioners plant 🌱 each year?

Everything I raise or harvest and don’t buy from the meat market is another animal not crammed together, medicated, and suffering on corporate slaughter farms. I wonder how many folks buy zero meat from animal slavers? I think those of us who are conscientious in our way have a responsibility to pass that on how we can. Thanks for doing so in your way. You were getting a little jittery boss. Shot 4, you were rushing. Outsiders perspective being what it is. Don't rush just cause you got a crowd. If you don't want to show the loading, can always cut it in editing later. I honestly understand the reasons why not and why to show it. Having shot guns like this competition, it's easy to get the rush going.
Your form is good, but yea from shot 3 on, you were rushing. Keep up the good content. But do relax when your shooting. Your there for the fun, so enjoy it. Not a race boss.
Pat Putnam You’re exactly right. I’m always surprised how difficult it can be to do the video and everything else on some days when my brain isn’t functioning at 100%.
I’ve got to find a happy medium with showing the loading process. When I cut one out I get feedback from the guys who want to see it all and when I show it all some guys remind me if I cut it all I could’ve gotten three times the number of shots in. I may start rotating those styles of editing. I’m not sure. Thanks for the feedback.
