4-20mA Analog Scaling with y=mx+b Slope Intercept Explained

We are going to explain the y=mx+b slope intercept formula as it relates to scaling 4-20mA signals. PLC inputs rarely scale values directly to a 4-20mA signal. Additionally the 4mA live zero confuses many people when trying to plug a raw analog input into the slope intercept equation of y=mx+b. So we are going to explain what the y, m, x, and b mean. At GM we have our "4-20" devices setup as 3.5 ma - 20.5 ma. The reason being is that various faults with the input can be sent to the PLC as either a 3.5 ma or a 20.5 ma signal. Of course if your input device doesn't provide this feature then it's pointless to accommodate for it. But it would create a fault on a sensor failure for example.
