Soo glad you liked this. For a more ballad side of Heep you will adore "Rain" and "Sunrise". Also anything really. I loved all of the Byron albums, that was MY Heep. I met Lee Kerslake in 79 in a club. Cool dude. I spoke to him about the 76 gig and he agreed it was a good 'un. Very nice guy. Instantly familiar to me. He was a bit taken aback that a disco dolly girl knew who he was and was into the band. The 70s were awesome.

Nailed it. "Rock Opera" was what I was going to comment on before I finished watching Justin's reaction. Both Demons & Wizards and The Magician's Birthday were in my top 20 favorite albums in my teens, with my preference being Demons. Rehearing it now, I'm struck by how much it reminds me of the Broadway soundtracks for Jesus Christ Superstar, and Hair in sonic presentation. Rock Opera, indeed.
The production of this album for 1972 was insane.

Thain's bass riffing is on fire in this song. Mick's guitar parts is clever and nimble and Kerslake just smashes. Hensley takes a bit of a back seat and lets them play while adding a subtle, solid, smooth organ part with some beautiful little flourishes. This song alludes to David Byron's namesake and his vocals, and the band's backing vocals, are stunning.

I think that--amongst all these perfect songs--the next song, the last on side A, is my favourite on this side. I can't quite put my finger on why, but it's happy one minute and sad the next, and goes through so many changes and variations and takes its sweet time doing so...maybe that's it. But then side B kicks off with Rainbow Demon, which is my favourite track by Heep full stop.

Afternoon, Justin. Dave from London, just off to get my teeth fixed (You're Sittin' In A Dentist's Chair, And They've Got Music For You There). I agree this is is a great song - dramatic melody, the driving bass, flashy guitar, great harmonies. So why did I prefer other rock bands back in the 70s? Because there were so many great bands around then, I had limited funds for albums, and David Byron was not a favourite vocalist of mine.

I really appreciate your reaction. I've felt for a long time Uriah Heep doesn't get the recognition they deserve. They have 24 studio albums with the most recent being released in 2018. Much like King Crimson going through multiple personell changes with Robert Fripp being the mainstay, Mick Box has been the Captain steering the ship Uriah Heep, who I feel is as a guitarist, is overlooked and undervalued. Thanks for listening to one of my favorite albums of my mid teenage years.

Went through my hard Rock phase quickly as a 70s teen but Heep is one of top few I still love esp the 72 albums. The drama, storytelling, theatrical and visceral nature of their music takes you on a musical and lyrical journey similar to pure Prog. Each member had a very unique quality.. Most hard Rock I simply grew out of. ProgRock and Jazz Fusion destroyed my interest in the genre and the Metal that came after did nothing for me. Heep and LZ are the two that still hold true and stayed dear to me nostalgically

Maybe because their albums sounded less balanced than those of Purple, Zepp or the Sabbs, but I've always considered the Heepsters as the fourth major band that helped mould the future of Rock music. "Best" is hard to pin down. On its day it's the best song. On a Rainbow Demon, day, though, Rainbow Demon might be slightly "better". And the album ends with a little opera or something like that, which is hard to compare to the shorter songs. (On its day the long song is the one.)

Heep have their own place in rock history and I've seen them live 4 or 5 times though I wouldn't include them amongst my favourites. It's interesting that you find this one of their best, JP (I'd go for the proggier stuff like July Morning or Salisbury, or even the catchy hits like Easy Livin' or Gypsy) It certainly has most of the Heep trademarks (quasi-operatic vocals, driving guitar and cool organ work) but doesn't catch fire for me - melody line is a bit uninspired.

Hmmm…for me this is good, but nowhere near their best. D&W is a very consistent album, and as it did so well they kept churning out similar albums till Byron was sacked, but nothing is as frenetic as Look at Yourself, or quite has the majesty of July Morning. It’s commercial and the edges have been rubbed off though. They had such a dense sound. I wish Box and Byron’s songwriting contributions hadn’t diminished so dramatically. As good as Ken Hensley’s are they tend to get a bit samey as album follows album.
Great group though. Shame their management flogged them to death. With more sympathetic handling they might have been even better and bigger.

Some say they’re a poor man’s DP, so it’s no surprise their sound here COULD be labelled ‘Stereotypical’.
A “Mini Epic” label would suit it - 4mins : 15 seconds, crammed with impressive instrumentation and yet from my perspective it suffers simply because it’s Uriah Heep.
    Why?
My childhood memories of seeing their mirrored statued cobwebbed tanked album covers alongside all the others; Sabotage, Vol 4, and Burn to name just 3 made an impact,
but no, their songs from Wonderland and Look At Yourself for example, simply escape me 45 years later.
The Heep prejudice/apathy increased after witnessing an early TOTP appearance which reached level 11 on the Spinal Tap “Were they Serious?/ Did rock culture do that to society ?” Mode of Reflection.
Mind you, i liked this song. All the components were expertly executed and I was shocked - pleasantly surprised at the integrated cohesive groove.
Well maybe not Groove. More of a bombastic thud. Plod. A fire drill. A Eurovision semi final. A mock exam. A kareoke blind date / cheese & wine evening. A cabaret scampi in a basket amateur dramatics run-through in the village hall.
    No. That’s Simply unfair.
I’ve been led to believe that The Heep are Now Hip & down with the Kids.
I’m sure with JP-led visits to Look at Yourself and very ‘eavy very ‘umble,
your channel will allow me to reminisce, rediscover and reevaluate their Stylistics and Songs.
Bring it on! Listen without Prejudice Vol 42.
    Diolch!
Alternatively, let’s extend a nice warm welcome to a “first time ever to be recommended here’ 70s band - namely, Montrose and the essential , “Space Station No.5” - a Tap classic if ever there was one.
Thanks for accommodating the unwinding of my brain. I shall now listen to it again, cat on lap and yesterday’s Gnocci in microwave.....
Alternatively, try the 1973 Budgie LP “ Never Turn Your Back on a Friend” - complete with Roger Dean gatefold sleeve. Cream of the Crop? u betcha!
Second listen: no, it’s the choirboy quiverin vocals and harmonies that are puttin me off. Ian Gillan on prescripted tonic medicinals? Please No More. West End Schmaltz meets Fame (i wanna live forever) cod-rock opera!! Thanks for helpin me sort my brain out. I almost succumbed there.

Now, it’s easier to hear it, with streaming and reactions, I can see what others like about it and see what I didn’t then and what doesn’t bother me as much. Still does but not as much… It’s like, if there was a dramatic knob to turn in the control room, they pegged it. I prefer finessed drama.
