Lee here... Wow how great was this? It was SO much fun watching you both enjoy my selections.
I know you typically prefer one band marathons but I REALLY wanted you to hear that Lighthouse song. I knew it would be right up your alley! It's the only song I know by them.
When Nick thought it was Uriah Heep and was surprised to hear trumpets, I immediately thought of their track "Salisbury." It's a very long piece, I'm sure you would like it. They use horns and it has lots of jazzy parts.
I really thought I may see some tears during Come Away Melinda, but since it was your first time listening you may not have focused on the lyrics. To me it's a very sad and emotional song, coupled with the beautiful music and the wonderful build, it's perfect. Yes, it reminds me of the Moody Blues as well!
Since Nick referenced "Hair," have you seen the movie? Omg it's so GOOD! I've seen it on stage twice too. Lots of classics came from that soundtrack, Aquarius, Let the Sun Shine In, Easy to be Hard, Good Morning Starshine.
I agree, Lex, I wish Circus was a longer track as well, I can't help but start it over once it ends, it's just so good.
Nick, I never thought about King Diamond screaming like David Byron but that was a good comparison. The last time I saw King Diamond live, he was playing Uriah Heep before the show through the loudspeakers so it makes sense to me. BTW did you see Mercyful Fate is back together for a tour? I haven't checked if they're coming here yet but I've never seen them, though I've seen The King 4 or 5 times.
Uriah Heep did have 2 singers during this time frame, but Beautiful Dream was all Byron. They guy had a very versatile voice! Ironically the other singer, Ken Hensley, sounded a lot like David Byron in the middle registers and I did not realize for a long time the difference between the two. Hensley had some great solo work as well.
As a side note, Hensley played that amazing slide guitar on Tears In My Eyes which you reacted to in a prior marathon for me.
Again, I'm SO happy you enjoyed all of these. I was slightly worried that Lex may not appreciate the screaming in Beautiful Dream, but then I remembered the reaction to Deep Purple's Child in Time and decided to take a chance.
Thanks so much for this opportunity, I REALLY enjoyed this! ❤️

The MoodyBlues type of Symphonic Rock was the early style of prog rock or art rock, before they started fusing rock with jazz etc. I think the band that started the seventies style of prog rock was Colosseum.

URIAH HEEP..ONE OF THE MOST UNDERRATED BANDS EVER.I WAS IN MY TEENS IN THE 70'S AND WORE THE GROOVES OUT..KEEP EM' COMIN' MY ROCKY MTN FRIENDS..P.S..LIGHTHOUSE IS LIKE CHICAGO,BLOOD SWEAT AND TEARS AND THE BAND CHASE.. CHASE IS A GREAT HORN DRIVEN BAND FROM THE 70'S.

    • @rajaz4054
      @rajaz4054 Před 5 měsíci

Chase had four trumpets only, as horns go, and one of them was leader Bill Chase. It's a shame he and other members died in a plane crash on August 9, 1974, putting an end to the band after three albums, Chase (1971), Ennea (1972) and Pure Music (1974).
There are two other horn rock bands that fit into this genre. One is a British band called IF. This band was a bit different because where other horn rock bands have trumpet, trombone, and sax players, IF only had two sax players. One of them also doubled on flute. The first four albums are IF (1970), IF 2 (1970), IF 3 (1971) and IF 4 (1972) This album was released with a slightly different track list in America under the name Waterfall. The original lineup was on all four albums.
The other band is Malo (Spanish for "bad").. Think "Santana meets Chicago". In fact, ,the guitarist on the first four albums was Jorge Santana, who is Carlos Santana's younger brother. The first four albums are Malo (1972). Dos (1972), Evolution (1973) and Acencion Day (1974). The band is best known for "Suavecito", which is on their first album.

As you know I'm a great ' Yes' man, but before I discovered them The Heep were my favourite band. David Byron was perhaps the greatest rock singer on the planet. Their best 3 albums are Look at Yourself, Demons and Wizards and The Magician's Birthday. But you two are infectious keep up your good work. Only David as the lead singer.

Can't say enough about the apex of Uriah Heep, the LP's Look at Yourself, Demons and Wizards, and The Magicians Birthday are all stellar. Nick nailed the Lighthouse comparison to Chicago, another band in a similar genre was Blood Sweat and Tears.

YESSSS the long awaited moment has come ... welcome back my friends with your show that hopefully never ends ... or at least not in the next years .... ok, now I'll listen .... never heard of Lighthouse, but liked it with the horns and everything. Come away Melinda is actually more untypical for Uriah Heep, since it's very quiet without keyboard, which is a major part of Heep's sound. Other than that it's not written by Uriah Heep and fun fact is, that another british band, UFO, had this song on their first album as well, not as nice sung, because David Byron was an outstanding singer with his clear voice and I love his english pronounciation ... but UFO has an astonishing end to the song. Continuing with Bird of prey - this is THE Uriah Heep sound which you could on the first albums. Circus goes back to the softer side .... beautiful song, but I still like the rockers better ... but don't say titles ... waiting for the next marathons. So this was a great start of the return of Nicknlex❤🤟WE'VE MISSED YOU TOO LONG

    • @rajaz4054
      @rajaz4054 Před 5 měsíci

Actually, "Come Away Melinda" does have a keyboard. It's a Mellotron, an instrument where each key on the keyboard triggers a tape that is connected to a roll with springs. When you play a note, the tape moves up to the top of the roll and when it reaches the top, it doesn't play anymore. It has an 8-second time limit. When you release the key, the tape quickly returns to the bottom of the roll, It can be made to sound like a flute, strings, or brass. The Moody Blues used it a lot between 1967-1972. King Crimson used it a lot on the first four albums between 1969-1971; Tony Banks used it for the introduction to "Watcher Of The Skies" The Beatles used it on "Strawberry Fields Forever".
I can't put the link here, so just look up the video "Mike Pinder describes how the Mellotron works".

Well that was a lot of fun guys! While I was very aware of Uriah Heep in the early 70's, I never got into them. I don't know why, I suppose I was too busy with all the other great bands of the day. As you said Nick, there was so much music coming out every week and I never managed to spend quality time with them. This, then, was so nice to listen to, and I had forgotten all about David Byron's dramatic vocals. Thanks for a very tasty selection from what I'm sure was a very large discography! Horn driven bands like Lighthouse and Chicago aren't really my thing, but thanks a lot for the great Uriah Heep music. A cool pre-Spain video!!!

Hi Guys ! So glad you waited till you got home before posting this. Just knowing you are much happier makes this video even more enjoyable. This is so good with Uriah Heep. A great choice of tracks. The 1st time I heard "Come Away Melinda" I could have sworn blind it was Ian Gillan on vocals. I was already fully aware Uriah Heep were heavily influenced by Deep Purple, using the same Hammond organ and of course David Byron's screams like Gillan, but that track was so like Gillan, I even told friends ..in the 70's ... What if Gillan knew, and appeared as a guest vocalist on one track and never let on ? ... It was Byron, but hey ..I was a teenager, and a very big Deep Purple fan, so knew Gillans vocals so well...yet Byrons vocals fooled me. Also notice in 1973 as well as Deep Purple changing their line up, they introduced a synth sound, very dominant with their album "Burn" ....and low and behold ... so did Uriah Heep at the same time, even with the same tones. Good eh ? Great rock band and "Uriah Heep Live 1973" album is really something to check out as well.. Thankyou both for this great marathon. Loved it ! Byeee Jim X

I have all 10 Uriah Heep albums that were released from 1970 to 1976. Those were the years original lead vocalist David Byron was in the band. There's Uriah Heep (1970), Salisbury (1971), Look At Yourself (1971), Demons And Wizards (1972), The Magician's Birthday (1972), Uriah Heep Live (1973), Sweet Freedom (1973), Wonderworld (1974), Return To Fantasy (1975), and High And Mighty (1976). Out of all those albums, my favorite track is "Wake Up (Set Your Sights)" from the debut album. Check that one out first and then the title track from Salisbury, which is their longest song and has an orchestra backing them up.
Uriah Heep was best known in the US for 1972's "Easy Livin" from Demons And Wizards and 1973's "Stealin" from Sweet Freedom..
As for Lighthouse, I have all eight studio albums from 1969 to 1974. They are Lighthouse (1969), Suite Feeling (1969), Peacing It All Together (1970), One Fine Morning (1971), Thoughts Of Movin' On (1971), Sunny Days (1972), Can You Feel It (1973) and Good Day (1974). The first three albums were with vocalist Victor "Pinky" Dauvin, the next three were with Bob McBride, and the last two were split between drummer Skip Prokop and guitarist Ralph Cole. One Fine Morning was their most successful album.
Lighthouse had a 1996 reunion album called Song Of The Ages, but I only liked the title track and didn't care for the rest of that album. So I don't have that one. I don't have Live At Carnegie Hall from 1972 either.
One thing that makes Lighthouse different from other horn rock bands is they not only had a horn section, they also had a string section. They had up to 13 members and it was often difficult to get the whole band on stage.

Which is part of another marathon idea, also on "Part I" No. 12. called "Blow Your Horn", so Lexi I KNOW will really love it (including a "band" Nick will finally expose to the "Familia" and Lexi!).
Well the Heep Marathon was awesome, and still need to buy most of their earlier catalogue to hear the deeper tracks.
I suggest 3 from "Look At Yourself" (1971) released later in the year after Salisbury. My favorite UH song; "July Morning", "Look At Yourself" and "Shadows of Grief". This album was a HUGE step forward for the band, a very solid album and great compositions.
Its quite amazing that Uriah Heep has "24" Studio albums under their belt and are still going (albeit with a vastly different lineup from the classic 70's albums).

Nick and Lex, all of your choices were very good. Some would say this was a sampling of their heyday. But this period only covers their first six albums - Very 'eavy, Very 'umble, Salisbury, Look at Yourself, Demons and Wizards, and Sweet Freedom. There are 24 studio albums and about 20 Live albums so you have a lot of catching up to do. If you continue with the first six albums might I suggest Lady in Black (a ballad), Salisbury (a 16 minute prog rock masterpiece), Look at Your Self, Tears in my Eyes.

Since Uriah Heep was one of the first 5 LPs of my brother, it's for me music of the beginning of my musical education. Now I'm wondering what you think about Uriah Heep .... there are so many great songs

@@franckthibault2521 I started right away next morning, diving into the "Heep catalogue" and for sure you can't go wrong with the Demons&Wizards album (containing easy livin) - all killer, no filler - maybe their best. Of the Look at yourself album you should know the title track, July morning and Shadows of grief ... more to come 🤘 Having started in the 70s, my musical journey is a little different, but I like A-HA, the beginnings of Bon Jovi, before he started turned me off; I was surely one of the first germans, knowing Guns N Roses ... and Rush is for sure in my Top 10 bands. Linkin Park and Rise against is more my son's music and I'm astonished, that you have Jinjer in your list. They are a band, you just have to adore, there's so much to tell about them ... maybe a subject for future music discussions ...👍

@@rajaz4054 Yes that Mellotron string sound has something to do with it, and the arrangement style, but mostly it's because of the background vocals, which are very much like the Moodys. At least that's when I got definite Moody Blues vibes.

Nick n Lex, When it comes to Uriah Heep and their full catalog of material, this was more like a sprint. As a fan for 50+ years, believe me, they were far ahead of their time. You guys noted that they could cover almost any genre and do it well. The Rock & Roll medley off of the 1973 live album is proof; they covered a few fifty's era classics. Please do not ignore the music after Byron. I could try to detail my favorites out of 25 albums, but the list would be too long. The current lineup with Bernie Shaw on vocals is equally as good as the '70's version, but obviously different. Just sample some of the songs off Living the Dream, or Wake the Sleeper, or Sea of Light (Roger Dean cover btw). You won't be disappointed. The recommendations below are all good too, so enjoy.

Always happy to see the lesser known songs here - it´s a nice selection, showing different styles - Come Away Milinda is actually a cover, but totaly diffrent than the folk song it´s based on. Many tried this one in the late 60s eary 70s - From Judy Collins to UFO, but the only one that catpures this melancholy sadness of the lyrics for me, is the Heep version - Read them, it´s not just a "nice" song, it´s actually the oposit... Bird of Prey is a great track, played live for years after. And while many consider Look at Your Self, Demons and Wizards & Magicans Birthday as the 3 Great Heep Records, for me, Sweet Freedom belongs in this list - No weak track an that one... Beautiful Dream has John Wetton of King Crimson and Asia on Bass... Critics hated that on but it was as far as i know their best selling record in the UK ... Great Album too... The more dominant heavy Bass on the first 2 Track was Paul Newton, Founder Member of Heep who left after the 3rd record. On Circus it´s Gary Thain Playing - a much mor technical Bass player and by many considered as their best - sadly past away much too young. For more Heep variations, go on further the Timeline - "The Hanging Tree" with John Lawton on Vocals, Maybee "It Ain´t Easy" A great track from the universaly hated Conquest record with John Slowman singing. "Sell Your Soul" from the Metal Record Aboming "Misstress of All Time", a great acustic track from the 90s with Bernie Show and "Between Two Worlds" from Sonic Origami - A track the than active Lineup dedicated to their first Singer David Byron.

I have clear rankings when bands have more than 1 singer : Deep Purple with Ian Gillan, Black Sabbath with Ozzy, Rainbow with Dio, AC/DC with Bon Scott, Priest with Rob Halford, Maiden with Bruce and so on ... The new singer of Uriah Heep was John Lawton, before with german band Lucifers friend, to which you reacted before. Regarding Bird Of Prey, there is an older version that was included on the U.S version of the band's debut album (simply titled Uriah Heep here) which had a different track listing from the U.K. release, Very Eavy Very Umble. It's actually a better version too, but for some reason they re-recorded it for the U.K. version of their second album, Salisbury--which also has a different track listing from the U.S. release. After the first two albums all subsequent Uriah Heep releases had identical song lineups in the U.S. and U.K. Here's a link to the original Bird Of Prey.... czcams.com/video/sO_QHTbYkUc/video.html
