4:52 That's a shit call. Glove down in front of base, runner slides lead foot directly into it, catcher holds onto ball.. a no doubt OUT and a suspicious umpire. 😐
BEN PLAYSS on my baseball team I got nailed i the stomach by a foul tip and then the very next day I got hit in the nuts by a foul tip the ball went right under my cup
I agree I was a catcher since I was a kid all the way to college... As a catcher you also need to know when to do it... But it was the risk of the most beautiful place to be a ball player... The most complete... You have to be a tough guy with good reflexes, being agile, forget about fear to the ball, and willing to take a hit. Baseball is life rest just details
Great to see "Charlie Hustle" Pete Rose on the video twice.. Still my favorite player.. Watched him many times in person play and met several x when i was a kid. Thx
Exactly. There's a clear difference between having to knock a catcher out of your way who's blocking your path , and intentionally hitting them as hard as possible to knock the ball out of their hands with no regard for their safety or flat out trying to injure them.
Knock the ball loose..real baseball. First highlight posey gets hurt..knee jerk modern baseball..let’s make a rule. If u like hard nosed baseball watch games prior to today’s sissy game
Kyle Grunert u can slam catcher all day if he’s in front of plate but!!!! U cannot bring arms up and barrel through, Cannot lower shoulder . It’s just as dangerous for the runner as catcher but catcher is stationary taking most of the blow
@@core4gaming479 lol what you want the runner to have his arms behind his back. its human reaction when youre about to take a hit your arms go up. literally wouldnt hurt the catcher to move to the side a little bit like the catcher at the end of this video.

@@alexisschoen2608 I saw a play in football, when I was a kid, that nearly brought tears to my eyes, it was so... sportsmanlike. The receiver caught the ball in the end zone, but JUST when he touched the ground, the safety slammed into him, going the other way. After they crashed together, they just stood there facing one another and the defender reached out and shook the receiver's hand. Like, "Sorry man, I couldn't stop. Good catch."
Absolutely the one at 0:45 that punch was uncalled for it is not like they intentionally run into them i mean if you are blocling the plate only one way its gonna go
Vladimir Guerrero though. From the rightfield corner throws the runner out. What an arm. One of these best arms I’ve seen. Old school fans like my father would say Roberto Clemente best outflield arm of alltime.
yeah throwing someone out from the outfield is one of the most impressive things in baseball. Outfielders never get the credit but have so much work to do in just a couple seconds.
When they first announced a few years ago that they were taking collisions at the plate out of the game, as a fan I was highly disappointed. But watching a few different videos (including this one) on collisions, I could understand why they did it. Sure it was fun to see when it happened but the players health is definitely way more important.
this is the right take. yeah it was a fun part of the game...but these are 200+ lb. pro athletes...one going at full speed literally to cause a collision strong enough to knock the ball out of a guy's hands.
JustJoshin' *again. Baseball used to be as much of a “mans man” sport as football but the rules they’re making now are just sissifying the game. I remember back in the 90s when I was growing up baseball was HUGE. And honestly my favorite sport. Still is, but since there has been less contact IMO baseball has been kind of dead.
Best one... David Ross giving the catcher a pat on the butt. "Good job bud". I was a catcher for 10 years... if you knock the ball free... good for you. If you hold on... I'll throw the ball back to the pitcher and that's the end of it. No ego... it's a part of the game. (It WAS Anyway....) still sad they did away worth bowling over the catcher...
Steve Yeager of the Dodgers got ran over several times in the 70's. The most memorable one is when Dave Parker nailed him in Pittsburgh and he held onto the ball.
I think is the catcher is covering the plate then he put himself in that position but I also think that you shouldn't go out of your way to blow up said catcher
I was a catcher for 15 years. I didn’t mind collisions when the runner came in with a shoulder to my body. Hell, I found it fun and added a bit of excitement. When a runner put in an elbow, punch or targeted my head it was fuckin on.
If the catcher has the ball, he can do whatever to tag the runner If the catcher is in the way of the runner, runner can do whatever to get to the plate.
Two catchers who were tough at the plate were Rick Dempsey who took a collision with Bo Jackson and Ed Ott , a former high school wrestling champion, who other teams thought was too rough.
Curious… this seems risky. I would hate to be out for the season, with an injury, and still be out. Why have it ok at home plate but not at second base? Is it worth the risk? What am I missing?
I always enjoyed the physical aspect of baseball; collisions at home plate chief among them. However, modern day players are bigger, stronger, and faster. The amount of force impacting a stationary target (the catcher), is clearly too much for even the best of athletes. Probably for the best that a rule change was made, but I do miss the “ good old days.”
I remember when I was in a collision at home plate. I was like 11? 12? Around that area...I was catcher and I was surprised at the outcome. There was this huge girl running at me like a ram. I almost shit myself. I had the glove at my chest and I bodied up. I really don't know what happened but she ended up face down crying and I only took a few steps back. She couldn't play after that. I wasn't as big as her but all I got was a bruise on my shoulder. Also, yes she was out.
I think the contact is more entertaining, but most of those runners are just attempting to hurt the catcher. I think the rule is a good thing and will help protect them.
Zechariah Landstrom I know, that's why I said the new rule is good. Catchers will be out of the way giving the runner a clear path to homeplate which will protect both players. Have you ever slid into a catcher when he was blocking homeplate? It doesn't feel good.
Zechariah Landstrom If the throw is good enough to get the runner out, shouldn't the catcher be able to field the ball and tag the runner without being in the direct path of the runner? The runner is pretty much focused on scoring, so the catcher just needs to field the ball slightly in front of or slightly behind the baseline to avoid a collision with the baserunner.
The side or avoid has been in high school and college baseball for years, and it’s working well in pro ball. But in a perverse sense, there was always a collision I wanted to see. Mike Scioscia, a catcher who never avoided a collision or dropped a ball in a collision an Bo Jackson running over Scioscia. Just a thought but I’m sure it would have been better than the Jackson-Bosworth collision.

The new rule is good. Do you see these catchers getting railed at home plate? They have no chance to protect themselves. They’re looking to find the ball and then make the tag while the runner is getting full speed with only 1 task, to crush the catcher. It’s not safe
so football or mma is safe? baseball now only has brawls to make it anywhere near as exciting. If you want safe, watch golf. And no one was forcing catchers to block the plate, it was their own choice.
wiremessiah but it's not their own choice. If they don't block the plate they lose their job for letting in runs. If it were me I'd block the plate too because if you don't you're letting down your whole team. I'm saying the new rule is there to make sure that catchers don't have to be a crash test dummy for players coming to home plate to score a run. I mean you watched the video right? Those catchers didn't have a fat chance in hell to protect themselves from those freight trains coming straight at them
