  • I saw this guy making the "Impossible Joint", and decided to try it myself. This is one of the highest joints I have ever made, and it was really hard to get a tight fit. However, it's not impossible!

This has to be the hardest joint I've ever made. It was very difficult to get a nice, tight fit!

Just watched your workbench video and was impressed with the amount of thought and detail out into it, made me smile seeing the same workbench at the start.

Are, regardless of how close you are to the lines, you proved what you set out to prove and that was to make the impossible joint. I also liked the techniques you used, and using coping saws to make gage marks so you could finish and clean with a chisel. I’m looking forward to making the joint! One more thought, you confirmed that we all have to develop our own technique and tricks leveraging what others have shown us. Many thanks.

Is your little circle logo a “tribute” to the samurai carpenter. Whether intentional or not, made me chuckle.

Good on you for giving it a go, but you've not helped yourself, Are, by choosing oak. However, it was your marking out and chisel skills which left the result looking the way it did. As a matter of principle, you don't go anywhere near your setting out lines until all of the remainder of the waste has been removed. You started in them, which is just plain wrong. You could also learn the trick of putting a coloured wax crayon mark on one piece (usually the male) before a dry fit, and this will mark the tight spots on the other piece.
Watch Dorian Bracht and see how much time and care goes into his marking out, (with a knife, not pencil) and note his choice of timber.
