CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Maverick (Tom Cruise) and Goose (Anthony Edwards) have a close encounter with an enemy MiG.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Devil-may-care navy pilot Pete Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is sent to Miramar Naval Air Station for advanced training. Here he vies with Tom Kasansky (Val Kilmer) for the coveted "Top Gun" award. When not so occupied, Mitchell carries on a romance with civilian consultant Charlotte Blackwood (Kelly McGillis). Shaken up by the death of a friend, Mitchell loses the Top Gun honor to Kasansky. Worried that he may have lost his nerve, Mitchell is given a chance to redeem himself during a tense international crisis involving a crippled US vessel and a flock of predatory enemy planes. The story wasn't new in 1986, but Top Gun scored with audiences on the strength of its visuals, especially the vertigo-inducing aerial sequences. The film made more money than any other film in 1986 and even spawned a 1989 takeoff, Hot Shots. An Academy Award went to the Giogio Moroder-Tom Whitlock song "Take My Breath Away."

Goose has seen enough of Maverick's schtick that he knows to bring a polaroid camera any time they're in the air.
Actually a camera was usually always on board to take photos during intercepts for Intel purposes
So irl there was a real intercept of two Libya mig 25s over the Gulf of Sidra. In the real intercept one f14 pilot went parallel with the mig 25 and flipped him off. There’s a really famous photo of a white Libyan mig with a green circle on it that was taken by the RIO during the intercept. It was quite common for RIOs to bridge cameras. There’s also a funny picture of a RIO with a f14 magazine too
...that is an excellent point...minor technological incongruity noticed...

The flying scenes in this movie have aged really well, this movie was was way ahead of its time
Those are real planes flying, how could it age? The only "cgi" was the inverted cockpit scene, and that was just splicing.
@@Effect-Without-Cause The editing and shots themselves can age. You can tell that they were flying at really low speeds to get these scenes, which would normally ruin the look But this movie was edited well and the shot sequences made it feel intense and realistic, so it holds up.
well, the other scene mentions that it was a "4G negative dive" the flying clearly does not show this maneuvre. But still, I get what you are saying...the sequel will put this film to shame though, regarding the flying scenes.
Was was
It pays to have the real deal flying the jets. They hired a bunch of Navy boys to both consult them on what was possible and fly the jets during the exterior scenes.
Trivia bits:
The F-14 pilot who "flipped the bird" at the MiG pilot was Scott Altman of VF-51, who eventually became a NASA astronaut flying as pilot on two missions and as commander on two more missions.
The pilot that gets "flipped off" by Maverick and Goose is Admiral Robert Willard, the lead flight choreographer for the film. He was Commander of the United States Pacific Fleet (2007-2009) before transferring to United States Pacific Command.
Willard appears in a history Channel documentary of the farewell of the Tomcat
@@tacticalpossum7090 Not sure if you're being facetious, but yes, this film used air footage, albeit along with some splicing techniques. And no, those planes were never really within, oh probably 50 feet of one another. Some trickery used, but the footage is of actual jets in flight.
Admiral Robert Willard also had to answer a Congressman's question on whether or not Guam will capsized (Not joking)
cripplehawk you mean the USS Guam?
Talk about one heck of an opportunity, being able to flip off an admiral :D

Just watched Maverick a few days ago, and it was awesome. It's actually painstaking to watch this movie after you've watched the sequel.
Yeah. They really went the extra mile with it. In this one it looks like they mounted cameras on the outside of the jet, while in the sequel, they actually built cameras into the cockpits to film the actors.
Dude the movies are 36 years apart. WTF do you expect.

Great days to have been alive when that film came out .
I get a kick out of Maverick and Goose's banter and I laugh so much when they're inverted and flip off those guys that freaked out Cougar.
It's funny how people don't realize that for most of the movie, the Russian MiGs and American F-14's were not directly hostile to each other. The plot is set during the Cold War, when there were heavy military and political tensions between the U.S. and Russia but no full declaration of war was ever made.
The events of the movie itself are fictional, but the reason that intimidation and fear tactics - such as missile locks and Maverick's stunt here - is because both sides were working on a RoE that specified that they weren't to fire unless fired upon. The entirety of the Cold War was like this - a lot of threats with very little actual combat.
The final dogfight has Russian MiGs engaging U.S. aircraft first because, as the CAG reports, a disabled U.S. ship drifted into Russian territory and the MiGs were sent to intercept it on the assumption that it was a warship exhibiting hostile intent and breaking the ceasefire.
Matt Leis And, of course, the Russian "MiGs" aren't actually MiGs but F-5 Tiger II's.
Cold War was a shit for third world. USA and USSR supporting military dictatorships to avoid the advance of the other side, sending weapons to countries in danger of civil war... even now so many countries still have to deal with effects of that time. =P
Craig H. A more important and useful point than everything in the above comment.
Matt Leis There was actual fighting between NATO forces and the Soviet Union. NATO won most of the battles and then things were so heated that NATO decided to back off a bit and so did the Soviet Union.

This scene has been done in real life. Not this scene in particular, but a recreation of this scene. It was astonishing how good the photo was too.
I’ve never seen the original top gun movie. So going into this video I knew that Maverick would be going upside down, but I never thought he would give the other pilot the MIDDLE FINGER while doing so. That scent me into hysterics lol.
Back in the Cold War, they apparently used to do this kind of thing all the time, on both sides. Flipping the bird, mooning each other, silly signs, you name it.
LOL! Pilots MOONED each other?! I would have loved to see how that was possible in a cockpit.
@@robertlombardo8437
I'd imagine it was the guys on the Tu-95 Bear bombers who'd have the most opportunity, as the cabins on those were big enough to get up and move around in, they'd try sneaking past air defenses in Alaska and they'd be shepherded back into international airspace by fighters.
The two seaters with observers/EWO's apparently could, as the guy in back wasn't flying the plane and thus had some wiggle roon to unbuckle.
Takes a little digging, but you can usually find the stories in pilot's forums or elsewhere online. Take them with a grain of salt, but I'd argue a good bit of them are true.
