CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Maverick (Tom Cruise) outmaneuvers and shoots down a hostile MiG.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Devil-may-care navy pilot Pete Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is sent to Miramar Naval Air Station for advanced training. Here he vies with Tom Kasansky (Val Kilmer) for the coveted "Top Gun" award. When not so occupied, Mitchell carries on a romance with civilian consultant Charlotte Blackwood (Kelly McGillis). Shaken up by the death of a friend, Mitchell loses the Top Gun honor to Kasansky. Worried that he may have lost his nerve, Mitchell is given a chance to redeem himself during a tense international crisis involving a crippled US vessel and a flock of predatory enemy planes. The story wasn't new in 1986, but Top Gun scored with audiences on the strength of its visuals, especially the vertigo-inducing aerial sequences. The film made more money than any other film in 1986 and even spawned a 1989 takeoff, Hot Shots. An Academy Award went to the Giogio Moroder-Tom Whitlock song "Take My Breath Away."

Gotta give it to Iceman a bit, dude held his own against 5 till Maverick showed up. Thats pretty damn impressive.
Hell yeah, man! No ripping on Ice in this case. He had serious balls.
I was always an Iceman girl. Lol. Maverick was too arrogant for me. This girl i work with and I have this thing where we call each other Maverick and Iceman. Lol. "I dont like you because you're DANGEROUS!" "Thats fair." Lol.

Merlin: "You're gonna do WHAT!?" easily one of my favorite lines in the entire movie. And the fact that his eyes just go so wide is absolutely hilarious. This is truly a classic American movie. I think I've owned three or four different variations of this movie over the course of my lifetime. This was also one of the few movies that my father absolutely loved. I have very fond memories of the two of us sitting down putting on our surround sound stereo making a big bowl of popcorn and just sitting down and watching this movie.
My dad and I loved this one, too. He didn't care he had a girl. Lol. He had me watch guy movies, and thats why I like them. Lol. Im the same way with the Rocky movies. I love them because of my dad. :)
I never saw this on the big screen so it was the first movie I watch on my 200" home cinema. It's fab in 3D.
When I got my first home theater system with surround sound this was the first movie I played!
Truth.
I LOVE THAT LINE TOO! That one and... "This is your idea of fun mav?" jajajajajaja
"I'm bringing him in closer, Merlin."
You're gonna do *WHAT!?*
His gaze is priceless on that moment LOL.
Gotta love Merlin 😁
Cracks me up every time 😂

This was unusual because one of the advantages that the f14 had was it was faster in a straight line than the mig
All of these guys (Maverick, Merlin, Goose, and Iceman) had stellar careers in TV and Film after this. The true sign of an iconic film. Tony Scott doesn't get the credit that he deserves.

I find it amusing that Maverick "hits the brakes" and makes his opponent overshoot by shoving the throttle into full afterburner.

A touch of class!. Bam!. Talk to me. Smile!.
No that is how F14 did a cobra (yes, it could go past 90 degrees, but Navy never allowed angle of attack that high). It is to maintain energy in high angle of attack. He hits the brake and then goes full throttle to keep the energy up with the nose goes vertica.
thank you for that information

I always thought it was funny that Jester gave that whole speech about how pilots had become too dependent on missiles and Topgun was created to teach dogfighting, but in the final battle, none of our heroes even talk about using their guns, and Maverick talks about the problem of only having one missile left as if he'd be helpless after he fired it. Meanwhile, the MiG pilots use guns all the time, and are quite good with them.
Jon Doe Unfortunately they actually kind of messed up a little explanation when gesture was talking about how Vietnam War Pilots have become dependent on missiles. What he forgot to actually mention was the fact that there's more to dog fighting than using your guns. What gesture was actually referring to with the fact that my Vietnam dog fighting techniques were not taught to most fighter pilots. Because they believed that dog fighting was relegated to history. Top Gun was not about teaching Pilots how to utilize their guns. It's about teaching Pilots skills in dog fighting.
@@ultrajd gesture?
Back in Vietnam War the Pilots got too dependant on Missile which means they just lock and fire recklessly and thus their missiles missed a lot because they treated missiles like a guaranteed magic homing rocket that is 100% accurate
They were wrong
It took Top Gun school to make them regain their elite status as the best Dogfighters again

throttle response in a fighter isn't instant. He throttled up and air braked at the same time, as well as pulling up. That way he bled speed and got behind, and by that time the throttle had finally got up to the level, which meant he instantly counteracted any stall caused by his speed loss. Indeed, well done Hollywood for the attention to detail.
Tim Robbins flailing around makes this scene so much better
Those Soviet Mig Fighters were just keeping their territories because US ship and Fighters came in their territories without any notifications. But their country was not rich as mush as US pilots so they could not take good flights like F-14 Tomcats ,so they had to overcome the bad situations but they couldn't . It's so sad story. Soviet pilots' children lost their father But many movie audiences did shout for joy to Tom Cruise.
And they also say same things " Justice always win ". Let's imagine that if we are in a those soviet pilots' situation . It would be a really fucking situation.
"On the count of three, break hard right." Starts counting down to one. Hate that.
Whose here now after watching top gun 2!! Absolutely amazing
Maverick :I'm bringin him in closer
Merlin
Merlin: Your gonna do !!!WHAT!!! 😆😆😆
Even though his role in here was a small one, Tim Robbins as Merlin has one of the best lines of the film, "You're gonna do WHAT?!!!"
The look in his eyes is hilarious too.
Talk to me!?. Did you hear about that fly bye?.
Am I the only one who tears up when this plays? Not tears of sadness. Rare “man tears”
cont-2) the reason ro forward the throttle (when he "hit the brakes" and let him fly right by) is because by slowing the aircraft initially (to let the guy catch up) you want to add power as you pitch up. Not only to prevent further airspeed decay causing an aerodynamic stall, but F14s have a history of compressor stalls during low speed, high AOA manuvers.
Its a basic variation of a high yo-yo.
1:25 one of my favorite lines

Hah, looks like Goose came back
guys...quit complaining about how unrealistic it is or what. i mean, srsly who cares! im a hardcore military plane fan but i dont give a shit about any of that because the action itself is awesome! learn to accept what is given to you instead on nitpicking on the details...geez
Like how the same middle is used to shoot down bogies lol
The Navy only let them shoot two missiles. They had so many different cameras angles on those two missile shots.
To do the Pugachev's Cobra, the maneuver Mav did, you need to throttle up so your altitude does not drop and so a total stall doesn't occur.
Angle of Attack.
@@catscradlegaming3319 *Angle
@@schwazman1 Whoops I always get them mixed up. Thanks!
Yeah bt to pull off a cobra, you need your plane to be able to maneuver at AoA's of up to 120°, the Tomcat could do maybe 80°. The F-14 was definitely not cobra capable.
That wasn't a Pugachev Cobra, though - it was a "dumping speed" maneuver. For it to be a true Cobra he'd have had to be able to drop his nose. The only thing he can do after he "hits the brakes" is let the stall pull him down and hope his nose points towards the target. If the remaining MiGs had been on the ball he'd have been an easy Fox 2 kill.
This video single handedly convinced me to join the army.

You'd better reconsider and join the air force
@@marcussavina2726 it was the volley ball scene. I decided then and there that the army was better suited to me.

F-14 Tomcat is a legend...
It's an incredible feet of engineering. I fly it in DCS and it's one of my favorites to fly.

This movie was so unrealistic it's great to watch
Those trainer planes are still flying years after the tomcat has been retired. 👍

It's time for an update of this movie with F-22's and 35's.
Yeh f22 raptors are so badass!!!
fuck the F-35 and drones
***** F-35's are amazing. Very fast, can manuver great, and is also a vtol.
John'sCobras The only problem with those 35s and 22s are too damn expensive to deploy. Would you risk 337 million dollars with super high tech equipment onboard to drop a bomb on a 500 thousand dollars target,When you can just use the cheaper existing ones(30 million dollars) to do the same job? =/
Cjephunneh It only sounds nice in paper. But in reality the first strike will always be a small group of men on the ground guilding cruise missiles.
Just a few experts know that scene is based on the real events of the Gulf of Sidra incident from 1981 and the Operation Attain Document on March 23, 1986
It's called a failure.
its my favorite reaction in a movie still to this day.
For all you non-aeronautical engineers, non-pilots, non-aircraft mechanics etc out there:
The manouvre the F-14 is performing is the cobra manouvre. The same as the MiG-29 and Su-27 can perform. And yes, the F-14 is probably the only other aircraft that can perform such a manouvre.
But in order to stay in the air you need to apply full afterburner, because you introduce a lot of drag during the cobra manouvre. So the scene is correct.
Regards
Uhh nope, to pull off a cobra, you'd need to be able to maneuver the aircraft at AoA's of 120°, the Tomcat could do only about 80°, and on top of that, there are no recorded cases of any model of Tomcat ever pulling off a cobra. What Mav pulls off in the movie is just a high yo-yo.
"On the count of 3, break hard right.....3...2...1....Break right!.." Should have been 1...2...3... Just sayin
Scott Gentilcore Maverick is the ultimate Troll.
Sometimes the military count like that start
Slamming the throttle forward on an F14 reduces power, it's backwards to what most planes use. It was set up this way so that the throttle couldn't accidentally fall back during launches from a carrier and reduce thrust. If you watch the movie again you might notice that when he aborts his landing at the start of the movie to go get cougar he pulls the throttle back to increase thrust. Hollywood knows what he's doing.
cannot put it any better! so true mate!
Those " Migs " are the F-16. You could not fool anyone.
I freaking love this movie!
My first dogfight in Battlefield 3 made me think of this movie.

That looks more like a Northrop F-5 than a MiG.
You'd be right. It's portraying a fictional MiG-28.
Wow. Looks beautiful good in HD, has aged well.
Had Mav not pulled that maneuver , the world would have been plunged into war. Plenty of people like to bag Hollywood, but often forget what they do behind the scenes.Americans are so great
LOL The MIG-28s have a real arcadey looking flight stick
You idiot is Northrop F-5
He shot the same missile twice, that's what gave him the upper hand. As for those dastardly MIGs, thay don't look like they used to.
I just noticed that the "enemy" cockpit scenes were filmed using the RIO seat of an F14 as a prop.
"Mustang this is Voodoo 3, remaining MiG's are buggin out."
I love what I call the "command base hurrah".
Topgun is my favorite movie
Missile is still going around
You're gonna do WHAT?😂
The thing that I find unrealistic about this movie is that in real life the F-14s were likely equipped with flares and chaffs to distract missiles. Yet we never see them being used here.
i think its because the plot was stupid lol
i think its because the plot was stupid lol
+Deep dark47 it made trillions
+Thesnakerox So where the MIGs...all of them.. and the Tomcats are also equiped with Sparrow missiles (25-30miles) and Phoenix (100 miles) missiles so Maverick could literally had started firing on the MIGs while he aproached the dogfight..
Also the MIGs here were suposed to carry exocet missiles (an invisible variant i guess.. or maybe a new secret variant wich is like a Sidewinder missile?) and they would be total pigs in the air carrying such a heavy missile (ooor maybe only 2 MIGs were carrying exocets and when their 4 escorts where shot down they ejected the exocets to run away faster.. )
also those are not MIGs they are F5s
I'm pretty sure the film used 2 missile shots. One was an AIM-7 fired at a drone. I know this for sure, because I was the one who shot it. I was on a missile shoot for VF-114 with the camera aircraft flying nearby. If you slow the footage down, you can see that it is in fact a Sparrow shot. Not only does it look like a Sparrow, but it drops as it is released from the hard point inboard of the Sidewinder. (And yes, it hit the drone....it was a previously scheduled training mission that they took the opportunity to film) Later, the missile fired is obviously a Sidewinder. Again, in addition to being obvious, visually, it "slides" down the rail upon which it is mounted when launched, which is characteristic of the AIM-9.
That's sick bro
it was a shot indeed.
Thats great ! I was just thinking ... did they fire a sparrow at gun range?
Yeah, Navy only allowed 2 shots. They used the same two shots in the whole movie even using mirror images to make it look like being fired from other side.
Poor Pugachev´s Cobra maneuver....lol!
lol... Mav says "on the count of 3, break right" and proceeds to countdown FROM 3 :D
Topgun (86) Final dogfight : Still Awesome fight!
Topgun Maverick Final Dogfight: 2 times More EPIC!! 💥💥
Mig didn't go into burner. Watch it again.
Our pilots used that in mock combat against F4s in Florida in the 60's and 70's. They drop like a rock right in front of them. Use speed brake and flaps for a second. Pop them back in and come right up on their 6.
That explosion though.

Apparently in this universe Chaffs and Flares haven't been invented yet.
At the distance shown, the MAW wouldn't have enough time to detect the missile and chaff/flares would be useless.
