CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Viper (Tom Skerritt) tells Maverick (Tom Cruise) the truth about his father's death in combat; Maverick considers his future.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Devil-may-care navy pilot Pete Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is sent to Miramar Naval Air Station for advanced training. Here he vies with Tom Kasansky (Val Kilmer) for the coveted "Top Gun" award. When not so occupied, Mitchell carries on a romance with civilian consultant Charlotte Blackwood (Kelly McGillis). Shaken up by the death of a friend, Mitchell loses the Top Gun honor to Kasansky. Worried that he may have lost his nerve, Mitchell is given a chance to redeem himself during a tense international crisis involving a crippled US vessel and a flock of predatory enemy planes. The story wasn't new in 1986, but Top Gun scored with audiences on the strength of its visuals, especially the vertigo-inducing aerial sequences. The film made more money than any other film in 1986 and even spawned a 1989 takeoff, Hot Shots. An Academy Award went to the Giogio Moroder-Tom Whitlock song "Take My Breath Away."

I want to be like Viper when I'm near retirement: humble, demanding but a social personality who wants to pass on knowledge. That is a great character right there.
I agree 👍

Well said sir
Viper is the epitome of a leader.
The 80's: when there was no problem that couldn't be solved with more confidence
Yeah if you tell the truth......you are dead.....in the danger zone.
Trying to protect the "World Trade Center".
uncoolbeans Even now, one can gain confidence, but only if one has the resilience and inner fortitude to practice. All we have now are because of people who were confident enough to build things that we now enjoy... or take for granted if we choose. If we take things for granted, that’s it... no improvement. If we build upon what has been given us, perhaps one day our reach will not extend just to the sky, but beyond it.
Guessing that’s due to today’s version of “solving problems”: preventing any more problems from happening.
@@chadrat39 Exactly.
Casting Tom Skerritt as Viper was one of the best decisions ever made. He exudes the confidence and the aura of a professional naval aviator, and have the charisma of a well-learned elder to be the mentor Maverick required.
The scene where he scold Maverick in his office because he violated the rules of engagement is one of the best acting i ever seen in my life. That speech is just perfect.
@@nicohope4 Agreed, Viper didn't raise his voice but it was clear to both Maverick and the audience that he wasn't happy with him and that he wasn't going to put up with Mav's shenanigans.
Skerritt is a tremendous actor, thought he was good in alien & space camp as well.
Nah it’s just the mustache 😂

Thats why I think it will be his coffin that Mav stands over and salutes.
Also a decent man, moreover.
@@caseym6779 curious if you’ve seen the movie yet and what you think of that scene?
Not seen it yet

Definitely worth the watch. BETTET than the first one IMO. Very worthy sequel that was done well.
Viper was such a badass. Would love to see a prequel focusing on him and Mav's father.
Was just thinking the same thing
Or, we could learn a real lesson and stop with the prequels and sequels and just accept the characters for who they are in the movie. If we want stories and backstories, let's live our own lives. There's plenty to experience and share in the real world.
Agreed
@@Thomas-dw1nb It's Hollywood. With the success of this film. Netflix would probably green light a mini series based on Mavericks father.
@@Thomas-dw1nb Yeah, watching a two hour prequel movie would really put a damper on our ability to go experience things in our own lives...
Trivia bit: Tom Cruise is now older in real life than Tom Skerritt's Viper was in the original Top Gun.

And your point
as a child, I paid attention to all the dogfights and maverick.....as an adult, I pay closer attention to Viper's words of wisdom....
Me too. I totally understand. I was 14 when this movie came out in 1986. Definitely a new perspective when you revisit it as an adult.
....same. Viper reminds me of my pop
Tom Skerrit is the best actor to play a naval officer. He reminds me of many COs I’ve served under.
You were blessed. I usually get the guy who was buzzed in the tower.
He was excellent in this role.

Tom served in the Air Force. No combat.
A good pilot is compelled to always evaluate what's happened, so he can apply what he's learned. Up there we gotta push it. That's our job!
I love it
True for any pilot.
True for anyone living life.
I ain't going to blow sunshine up your ass lieutenant!
I am private pilot and what you say (the movie line) is true of all pilots. There's no such thing as the same landing ever or never the same take off. The sky conditions are always different. You learn from your mistakes and then apply the lessons learnt towards your next flight. All pilots are continually learning....
this scene actually one of my favorite in the movie. the way viper broke it down to maverick telling him the important role of a pilot and has the most risky job in the navy. also the scene where viper said "now i'm not gonna sit here and blow sunshine up your ass" and the waves constantly riding through the background is so refreshing and special.
Well said👍
Old school "hard-knock"
Yes and the way the conversation switched from "chat" to official business..."now what's on your mind"..brilliant..
Nothing says badass more than a Top Gun hat.
And the fact that Viper isn't wearing it because he wants attention or respect. It's because it's actually his and he earned it.
How bout 300 spartans...

Happy 85th Birthday Tom Skerritt
I’m here because an old friend of my dad just told me Viper reminded him of my dad, who died 39 years ago next month. My dad must have been a great guy. I didn’t get to know him well enough, but at least this clip let’s me get a sense of him.
Right on man.
Happy for you that you have this, mate. The legacy of a dad echoes long after they are gone.
Top Gun was perfect in every single aspect : music , actors , photography , story , atmosphere.
100% agree
As corny and far fetch the movie was it was fun, a blast, and enjoyment to watch multiple times.
Above all, the most perfect star of the story - F14 Tomcat. Nothing else compares. "Anytime Baby!"
Completely agree, and as great as the flying footage will be with TopGun:Maverick, I know it won’t capture all that you mentioned like the original.
@@krisoliver6202 You can never go home. People are going into Top Gun:Maverick expecting another 90 minutes of the original. They will likely be disappointed.
Tom Skerritt is underrated in this movie. This particular scene is one of my favorites
He’s not really underated
This scene is the strongest and deepest part for Maverick... True words spoken from Viper... Life lessons...
lot of people don't see there's so much more to this film than fighter jets
Viper is the perfect mentor. Honest without being patronising, a straight talker who'll tell you the truth regardless of whether you like it or not. When he talks you listen. Maverick had huge respect for him, and in Top Gun Maverick you sense a lot of Viper in the way Maverick teaches and looks out for his pilots.
The 80s. The greatest time in US history 🇺🇸

You kidding? Really? The 80s? Geez, there is SO MUCH you obviously don't know.

The surroundings, the waves in the background, the birds you hear
Just has this soft feel good vibe. Im 38 now and even as a young kid watching it. I felt it even then
Im not explaining myself well. But its just something

it’s the awesome-80’s guitar riff at the end of the scene...
@@paulzeigler1075 so frigging good mate. Fair play
I think you hit the nail on the head; there’s something in the styling with how the scene was put together with the lighting, whatever lens the camera had, the subtle background noise…it’s distinctively 80’s and yet timeless.I can’t put my finger on it, but my thought when I read your observations was this scene has a similar quality that Miami Vice had. It’s was somehow groundbreaking and set a pop culture standard that guys our age recognize from childhood with a certain nostalgia. Good post, man!
We have a trucking company. Our drivers and myself can lose confidence when an accident happens. Relatable scene, great movie.

I might go one further and claim Top Gun (1986) the greatest movie ever created in the history of cinema.
I never get tired of Top Gun, and Viper was the anchor for the whole movie. The best scenes are Viper.
It’s a small scene but actually one of my favourite in the whole movie. Every young man needs a Commander Mike Metcalf, call sign Viper, in his life.
Viper was the coolest character in the movie. I want to look that way in that age.....
Just wear a top gun hat & grow a mustache like that & you’ll be set
@@chrishandsome4267 and....having a house in Florida, flying fighter-jets and having probably 7 cars in the garage :)
the fighter jets are not critical...but my arcade collection in the basement wouldn't hurt :)
NO CGI in this scene, the director waited for the right exact sunset to shoot this scene, today this would all be green screen
CGI of sunset back in 1986 wouldn't be believable at all, maybe even impossible. And Hollywood started using green screens back in 70's.
Tip
Did you hear the true story of Tony Scott wanting to get the perfect angle (sun in the background) for the iconic opening scene, particularly when one of the jets lands on the aircraft carrier? The military had done their job and couldn't continue to cruise in the carrier, unless the producers paid thousands of dollars more for reimbursement. Tony forked up over $10,000 of his own money so they would keep cruising for another 15 minutes and get many of those awesome shots.
All F14 scenes were actually real
The capture can be on location. We use the Da Vinci color correction at work to adjust for lighting.
This was a beautiful scene. Heartwarming and respectful. Can’t ask for more.

Viper is the guy who leads from the front! I came from naval aviation and being onboard USS JOHN F KENNEDY CV-67 . These aviators and Weapons Systems Officers are the cream of the crop! Together with their Marine
/ AirForce counterparts they deserve the proficiency bonuses as their skills do not come off the street everyday! It takes a ton of academic and other security qualifications along with Class 1 A Flight Physical to qualify. The pride of me seeing these men and women cannot be measured. They are the nation's best and they make us proud everyday along with all other in different jobs. A aircraft carrier is a floating city. We do more before 5a.mm.than what most people do all day! Ooorah! Go Navy! Fly Navy! Kudos to Top Gun fliers!
I was on the JFK 89-92. Did Top Gun help influence me to join the Navy? Ha, yeah a little :) Was happy to get assigned to an aircraft carrier. Sad to see JFK in sad shape in Philly Navy yard.
I believe Maverick's dad saved Viper's life, which is why Viper partly feels like he has to give Maverick the best chance possible to reach his potential
I recently used Vipers advise of, 'A good pilot is compelled to always evaluate what's happened, so he can apply what he's learned.' With a few word changes for my students during a lecture on strength training athletes. They loved it, regardless of whether they got the reference or not.
That speech to me felt like it wasn't literally just for fighter pilots, but toward everyday life.
It's not just the literal context of the saying, but the main message behind those words.
We make mistakes.
We learn.
We grow.
And as we do...
We become wiser and understand.

The cinematography is great but I’ve seen better

I so hoped to see Viper in Top Gun Maverick. He was so effortlessly cool. Every inch the seasoned aviator that exuded calm competence and authority with no drama, he had the most awesome presence about him.
Arguably the best scene of the movie

Viper is basically telling Maverick that gooses death was not his fault.
"Up there we gotta push it. That's our job"
I always enjoyed Viper's words of wisdom in the first Top Gun. I really wish he returned in Top Gun Maverick, since Tom Skerritt is still around. Top Gun Maverick still is a masterpiece though.
Man, to see that fight... F4 Phantoms, MiG 17s, hell yeah. Duke Mitchell is the man.
May have been a few 21’s too
Viper is wrong, F-4 Phantoms never flew off the USS Oriskany like he says in the movie. The USS Oriskany exclusively deployed single seat F-8 Crusaders because F-4’s were too heavy for its flight deck.
The name of Duke Mitchell was actually a nod to Randy “Duke” Cunningham, who flew the F-4J Phantom II on Connie. Shot down 3 MIG-21’s in May ‘72, plus 2 more from a few months earlier. 5 in all. All with missiles
@@goldenshark3182Viper is right about the VF Squadron 51 having flown with F-4 Phantoms II, was at the beginning of 70, both that participated in the end of the Vietnam War and in 1978 the Navy began replacing the F4 by F-14 A in the VF51 Squadron, but the F-4 was not embarked on the Oriskany , the ship had embarked 2 squadrons of F-8 Crusader 2 Squadrons from A-4 Skyhawk and later 2 A-7 Corsair squadrons.
