    I've looked at the Kattee bags and apparently I have the same exactly design but from a different company. All I can see about my bag, in particular, is that it didn't last me a year. Though I had not treated fairly in some situations, the quality wasn't great. At first glance it looked and smell great almost too good to be true but when the brass metal started to worn out and break off, that's when I realized it wasn't worth what I originally invested in. It's a good thing I didn't spend over $500 on my first bag but I've appreciated your videos (the one with Saddle Back and Maxwell Scott) that allowed me to be more informed of my purchasing decisions.

    Hello, Antonio. Great video, a year ago i started as a professor, so I went and peak up the most beatifull leather briefcase I could find (didn't know the first thing about leather, but after watching your video I think it is top grain). This briefcase had this matte finish that I really liked, but with the daily use it started to shine (specially the back side that rubs against my sport jacket). Is there a way to bring back the matte finish???

    Hi Antonio, thanks for another informative video.
    How do you feel about shoulder strap? Here is the thing:
    I live in the city with no car, and I am used to carry a backpack all the time (black nylon, relatively sleek), but I feel like it is not a great thing to bring to a job interview. Briefcase seems to look more professional, but without a shoulderstrap it is both uncomfortable to carry (with laptop inside) and likely to be soiled or left somewhere (when I put it down).
    Shoulder strap might solve this, but it seems it might damage the jacket over time and looks less professional.
    What do you recommend? Are there some padded shoulderstraps around that look acceptable? Is it acceptable to have longer strap across the chest (more practical) or just a short one across one shoulder? Should I remove the strap for more formal occasions?

      C'mon Antonio, Kattee has really poor quality products, even if it is full grain. That's why you pay $50 for a bag. In the last year or so I figured out I better buy the best there is than buy cheap and replace it in one year. Check Saddleback. I prefer to pay 500 bucks and have it for the rest of my life (if I take care of the leather of course).

    In terms of full grain, or even bridle leather, I would recommend two American companies 1) Pad and Quill for quality construction and materials, and a great design that straddles formal and casual, or 2) Lotuff for top-of-the-line professionals - executives, experienced lawyers, tenured professors, etc, not overly stuffy style but absolutely sharp and distinguished.

    • @sorabji1
      @sorabji1 Před 8 lety +1

      +sorabji1 An important note about Lotuff - order directly from their website, not from Amazon. The "Lotuff" products on Amazon are cheap genuine leather, and made in China, I'm not even sure if they're from the real Lotuff company. The briefcases I'm talking about are handmade in New England and available on the official Lotuff website, pricey high-end, but gorgeous products.

    One thing you left out is the different tanning processes- Chrome tan and vegetable tan. Chromium tanning uses minerals and salts to extract the water and stuff. Chrome tanning costs less to make, comes in more colors, and is more resistant to water. Veg tanning is a traditional, but longer process and therefore costs more to do, and comes in less colors, and isn't as water resistant. However, veg tan patinas/ages better, and breaks in more naturally- also, it has that awesome leathery smell.
    Not a huge thing in my opinion, but just something that differentiates lower cost vs. higher cost bags. Great video!

      I had the same problem before. Although Antonio supports matching briefcase colour with shoe colour, it honestly doesn't matter. Some would even argue that matching your briefcase with your belt and shoes looks almost too coordinated. The important thing is that you like using your briefcase and it meets your needs.

    My girlfriend bought me a 620 dollar Bosca Stringer Leather bag for my birthday. It looked great on the picture online and all the "family business communication" plus the 100% customer satisfaction / money back guarantee convinced her to buy it and import it to Europe. I have used it for 1 day, attaching the bag to my trolley (as the Stringer bag is specially designed for) and the true quality of the Bosca Stinger bag reveiled itself. It gave horrible scratches all over showing that the paint (!) is razor thin and very superficial on these bags, hence comes of with the slightest use. Underneath the paint is cheap split in half leather skin of light colour. Obviously not "made in Italy" as these fakers imply. Asking 620 dollars for such a product is outrageaous. And of course: no money back!!! (we sent it back after they initially promised uis money back and than they came back on their dicision implying we had 'maltreated tha bag' - yes well, using it for a day is maltreating) Never felt so inclined to undertake action as now and reveal this company for what it is. I live above a shoe repair shop that also repairs leather goods (5th generation, talking about family businesses...) and the man couldn't believe when I told him what we paid and said it's probably made in China and spray painted, not worth more than 50 bucks. So it only looks good on the webshop pictures. Save yourself from a lot of trouble and stay away from Bosca!!

    Nice comments -- but mostly off point.
    A brief/attache case is for business. So business considerations MUST predominate.
    (If you take a $1,000 case on the subway, you deserve what happens to you.)
    MOST important is presentation at work and in meetings.
    Do you want an attache case (opens like a clam, needs to be flat, is hard-sided), or
    do you want a brief case (stands on the floor, can be accessed from the top, and is soft-sided).
    The structure of your meetings and the nature of your communication to client/co-workers is key.
    You never want to appear clumsy, or fumbling for papers or files.
    Personally, I like brief cases. Attache cases take up too much room on table, and look stupid on the floor.
    Brief cases allow you to reach down for added papers/docs/contracts etc gracefully. Attaches almost require you to bring out all the papers you might use, even when you might not use most.
    Also, you may only need a high quality portfolio. Holds a few papers, and is small, not clumsy.
    That is mostly what I use now - a nice full grain portfolio
    BTW -- "faux" is pronounced "foe".

      The argument has been made that Saddleback is too casual because it has hardware (D rings, etc.) and looks somewhat rugged. I disagree. I had two trials back to back and in both cases, I had my Saddleback Leather briefcase. In the first suit, opposing counsel had a carbon Saddleback Leather messenger bag while in the other case the co-defendant's lawyer had a tobacco Saddleback Leather classic briefcase.

      Saddleback makes good stuff, but there are many other options out there that are as good or better. As you get into the higher end, you should also be considering if you want chrome tanned leather (Saddleback and others) or vegetable tanned leather. If you are trying to find something in this price range, you owe it to yourself to learn a little more about leather, and at least consider other options. I'm a fan of Satchel & Page, but they are just one other option among the many.

    I would recommend hothgard stibbon for classy style or ruitertassen for b casual, but they are for your european viewers... they offer a good bang for the buck.. in us of a, custom hide seems like a pretty nice company... of course saddleback and buffalo jackson are great for a rugged style, but if you don't want the adventure look, ch is the way, everything else seems pretty expensive.

      They're good, I love the Tomacelli, but in that line of price you can get the same level of quality (or even better) of a jp marcellino with hrothgar stibbon.
      He has a degree in what he does, his leather comes from a very traditional place and takes a whole year to make.. in the end the price is way cheaper than a MS, you can ask him customizations as well.
      When it comes to bridle leather briefcases that top money uses, forget the luxury brands, he is the real deal.
      He is not much know around, people often prefer Henry Tomkins as a artisan, but he is awesome and I hope people get to know him and his work.

  • @therealblurrybarber
    @therealblurrybarber Před 2 lety

    I wish a hide cost $100. I buy by the half hide or side. For good quality you're going to pay at least 200-300 per side. Shell cordovan is even more expensive. You would be lucky to get 2 out of a side. So cost of materials for one bag is going to hit at about $150 to $200 plus. Plus the amount of time it takes to hand make and hand stitch (hand stitching is very important) a bag or briefcase can reach upwards of 20-30-40 plus hours depending on how refined you're going. Not to mention overhead, marketing, etc. This is why these high end briefcases are so expensive. I promise we aren't making a killing on it.

    Hey Antonio! I was curious to know if the leather of your briefcase has to match your shoes? Since belts and shoes have to match, does this rule apply to briefcases also?

    • @RealMenRealStyle
      @RealMenRealStyle  Před 8 lety

      +Luis Robles It’s not necessary that the color of the briefcase should match your belt and shoes. It’s okay to have a classic tan shoes and tan belt and dark chocolate bag.
