Yes! I've been trying to find a video that showed how they sound different, but this is the first video I've found, that actually shows the SAME notes/tunes/sounds on both type of guitars. Very helpful for a new guitar starter like me :)
Great insight into a contrast we guitarists need to know. My experience is that classical expresses bass/melody lines with more distinction. But, bending notes and the corresponding available emotion is the realm of steel string. Your teaching is beyond good. I am an advanced player that really respects your teaching skills.
I have classical guitar and a few steel string guitars. I love them all. One big advantage of classical is that my wife lets me play it softly while we watch TV. That's another hour or more a night of practice for me. Thanks for the great video. Don't tell Willie that nylon won't jangle.
I own both a classical and a steel-strung guitar. The classical guitar I own is of better quality and build than my acoustic guitar. That said, I feel classical guitars are a lot more responsive and better for articulation and expression. The melody can really shine in a classical guitar and the bass sounds rich and deep. The music sounds a lot more balanced in a classical guitar. But I do feel that there are things you can do with an acoustic guitar (like tapping, perhaps) which aren't quite suited to the classical guitar. There are cases where the acoustic guitar shines in a way the classical guitar cannot. Both instruments have their proper place, but the classical guitar wins out for me!
Wow. I'm only a beginner but this is the best comparison I have ever seen on CZcams. Trying to decide if I want to learn classical or just continue with steel string acoustic / folk music.
@@braylonking3249 i'm agree with you! I have 10 classic guitars each one on a different tuning! And since i Saw guys like Lucas Stricagnoli, and Justin Johnson, and the Best finger style Guitar players in the world i can see that they used acoustic guitars. SO i got 3 acoustic guitars but i like more the classic guitars because i'm more used to it and don't get me wrong i love all kind of guitars, Even the 3 strings cigar box guitars, also the skateboard Slide Guitar, the one string guitar, and the shovel Guitar
Ah I love classical guitar - it’s all I play now. But I pretty much took my acoustic skills and transferred them over. I’ve learned a lot more in the way of classical but it’ll be great to get some proper ‘tuition’ from someone I admire and trust.
Great class as always, I have both kind of guitars, I’ve been playing my classical longer than I have done my acoustic or electric, mostly I like to use different instrument for different kind of music. Thanks for the clear explanation of the difference.
I've always played on a classical guitar. It sounds "warmer" and more defined. The strings last longer (depends on the brand, but I use Savarez) and are easier for the fingers. I don't like the sound of a western guitar - they sound.. dead? . I do however really love resonator guitars - specially the full bodied metal ones. They sound awesome when using a metal finger-slider! One way to get around the wear and tear on a classical guitar from using a pick or slapping it too much is buying a tap-plate (golpeador) and place it between the bridge and the soundhole.
Looking forward to this series. I've heard it said that there is a cultural difference, that, for instance, If you go into a music shop in South America, you will mainly find nylon string guitars. As it happens, I find nylon strings much easier to play fingerstyle on because the strings are further apart.
This is my two cent. For classical stuff ofcourse the classic guitar is better. I am talking about play solo arrangement of pop/rock songs, it just sound better in an acoustic guitar, because the note last longer, and you can add a lot of percussive technique to it,so the song sounds really rich and alive, and even better than play the song on piano, which impossible if you play classical guitar technique only. I practice a lot with classical guitar though. Because the string so gentle I can do 4 hours straight , while with Acoustic guitar my finger burn out after more than 1 hour of intense training.
Great video, I'm looking at a classical guitar. I think it will be a better guitar to learn finger style on. I also like the sound better. thanks for the great videos. Take care of yourself and your family.

Thank you, this helped me decide between classical and acoustic. And I appreciate that I could hear how they sound when played with fingertips as opposed to fingernails.
Thank you very much for this truly informative video. The classical sounds like a real person being emotional whereas the acoustic is not so “human”.I’ve been playing the acoustic for a while but it doesn’t feel quite right somehow, I’ll definitely try with the classical guitars.
Acoustic guitar is better for playing simpler music. the notes linger a bit longer before fading. as you said it can sound more alien... and that's a good thing if you want to create special atmospheric music. non chord tones in rhythm sound really good with steel guitar. soft, gentle stuff is better played with classical. picks work better with steel strings.
@@user-tb2jy9lu3d probably the fact that the neck is wider in the classical guitar, so chords might be a bit difficult to reach. Not all classical guitars are like that, mine for example has a more slim neck and it was perfect for a beginner like me.

Nylon sounds more harp like, but I experiment with different string types, fluorocarbon & titanium. I have several steel string acoustic using light gage, 10’s, so bending is a wee bit easier.

I love Zac Brown Band's music...but of course he plays Classical. I've always played acoustic-electric or electric. I can't decide which to get. Apparently Classical is wider on the neck. Yet I have always sucked at fretting an acoustic guitar. Yes, I 'could' fret them strength-wise. It gave me callouses on the fingertips (normal, of course) that would peel as I played. When I would go to put my contacts in every morning, the fingertip skin would be peeling on them. It looks like Classical is easier to fret, of course...and has a brighter/more peaceful tone. Has anyone ever played blues on Classical, for instance? Probably doesn't sound very good. How much more difficult is learning to adjust to the width of the neck of a Classical after playing electric and acoustic?

You could try it on a nylon string guitar, but you might have to have the nut filed so that the strings fit the slots. I'm not sure, but maybe do a quick google search. For a regular steel string acoustic, and on electric you might have to have the nut filed and see if the bridge can fit the strings slots. Also on an electric the pickup positions on how they're situated on the guitar will be accenting certain frequencies that may or may not be intended. research "upside down pickups" or jimi hendrix's sound since with his fender guitar his "bass strings" the E, A, and D strings would receive more accent on the higher frequencies (treble) whereas the G, B, and e strings would receive more accent on bass frequencies making the overall sound a bit different .
