    One thing I forgot to talk about was the image going around showing off what looks to be some sort of badge system. Obviously we'll have to wait and see, but at the moment it feels a lot like the "partner" system. It looks cool, and I'm glad it's there, though it feels like another half-step toward the original concept rather than a full return to it. We'll know soon enough, though!

    I feel like “half-step” was definitely the right word to use in regards to Origami King. I think it boils down to the conflict between the game the creators/developers want to make and have a passion for versus what game the fans want to see. Honestly, I think it also has to do with the genre of traditional jrpgs being mostly incompatible with Nintendo’s design philosophy. Nintendo always wants to be the leaders of innovation and create unique game experiences. The problem? Jrpgs is a relatively stagnant genre when it comes to gameplay experience. Sure, you have differences in combat “styles” between Xenoblade Chronicles, Final Fantasy, Paper Mario, etc., but the general strategy behind the battle mechanics are pretty much all the same. And it’s even more apparent when you look at games from the same series (e.g. FF1 and FF7 is basically the same battle structure with the uniqueness coming from minor things like statuses, elemental types, special moves, etc.) Then why do people love a jrpg series so much if it is relatively stagnant compared to other genres? The only thing that makes sense is that the players fall in love with the characters, the settings, basically what makes the rpg genre so amazing imo. I think that’s why we see the downward spiral of the Paper Mario series. Nintendo/game developers want to make a game with a unique experience, which is great in its own right, but I would say successful RPGs require you to make a unique story and develop a game around it. I would say the original Paper Mario itself exemplifies the RPG genre the best actually. An RPG should be a book. A book that is a page turner from cover to cover. P.S. Well, that was a lot longer than I thought it was going to be haha. Thanks if you read it all, even if it dragged on. 🙂

      @YuseiTheSynchroHero Před 3 lety +78

      "the players fall in love with the characters, the settings, basically what makes the rpg genre so amazing imo"
      Ya know... that's a good point honestly. Even the original Paper Mario nailed those down to a "T" and the story was basically rescue Princess Peach from Bowser but clearly, Peach gets more involved in helping Mario out on his adventure and Peach getting help from the little star Twink is adorable. ;0 And even amongst the generic Toads, you also have Toads with small design quirks that make them stand out. I can always remember Russ T. because of those small quirks (he's a blue Toad with reading glasses, and a dictionary in his hand and he lives in like a makeshift library lol). or Tayce T. the old lady Toad chef. lol. We even had Toads with turbans who look like they come from the Middle East. lmao. I didn't even think about that at the time but that's pretty interesting. Now, there are _only_ generic Toads. There's not even Toadette (she was in Thousand Year Door)
      But your comment is interesting. I can agree that they're all very similar with *some* differences to set each one apart gameplay wise, but the characters, stories, and settings are what really shine.

    Here's an idea that hit me recently, coins could effectively be EXP. Games like dark souls had it to where you collected currency and then used it to "buy" a level. I mostly suspect this looking at Mario's health. We see it vary weildly through the trailers, and in enough small intervals I suspect it dousent come set milestones in the game. The possibility of buying health upgrades might mean getting a coins is rather significant.

    • @nicknish
      @nicknish Před 3 lety +5

      I like the way you think but it looks like you’ll be able to get coins from many different sources in this game unlike Dark Souls which was only from combat or certain rare-ish items. DS also had many stats that dramatically changed the combat gameplay and thus forced you to make increasingly difficult and intentional decisions. This made the game much more variable and interesting.
      If coins in the new Paper Mario have scarcity, the balancing was tightly controlled, and its economy made you make decisions that dramatically change your gameplay, this could be interesting.
      But the signs and history point to Nintendo wanting to make a spin (no pun) on a shallow idea and continue to make it more accessible, rather than deepen story, challenge, gameplay, and memorable characters.

    Confetti is gained from battling, The coins seem to be the way to progress through the game, Mario is shown in different screenshot with more max HP and dealing more damage. The fear mainly comes because people think the fighting is like SS/CS but in reality, it's closer to TTYD (The attacking part, not the turning part). Partners are back, the reason the narrator says that some partners can battle is so people don't think that Folded Bowser would be battling (watch me get debunked as soon as I say that) another fear is that the partners are temporary, which is confirmed by the website, but Bobby can be seen in later parts of the game. also, the UK Nintendo shop page for Paper Mario The Origami King states that while Mario cutting streamers/ defeating enemies, Luigi will be looking for keys to The Castle, the way they worded it makes it seem that there will be intermissions with Luigi.
    Also there aren't only real-life objects as bosses, there is Gooper Blooper, Origami Peach is probably a boss and King Olly is probably the final boss, and Bowser is a powerless ally. Sounds familiar?

    Some thoughts:
    -The game overall looks like a middle ground between classic Paper Mario and Sticker Star/Color Splash. So they aren’t all the way there to greatness but it’s a good start. Nintendo seems to be learning.
    -My guess is the partners work as summons in battle. Like instead of Mario attacking he can call a party member to do the attack that turn.
    -Coins instead of XP is potentially salvageable depending on what you can spend coins on. Note that a lot of RPGs like Dark Souls mix XP and currency into a single thing. We know Mario’s health increases throughout the game. Maybe you need to use money to upgrade Mario, and battles could be the most profitable way to make more money even if you use up some weapon durability during battle.
    -Personally I think the “thing” bosses are a fun idea, especially since we’ve seen other bosses are in the game too. And I’m more sympathetic to it because the villain of the game is the “Origami King”. So it makes sense his top minions would play with the paper or arts and crafts theme. It would be silly if they were working for Bowser or something.
    -Also the pathing mechanic for bosses might seem strange at first, but it’s actually necessary. The game’s normal battle system is based around grouping together large numbers of weak enemies for AoE attacks. So bosses that are 1 v 1 fights need something different.
    -Some other videos and screenshots show that the Origami partner can transform into a giant turtle monster, so maybe she can do some powerful summon moves.
    -Apparently Bobby has amnesia. That explains why he initially just identified himself as “Bob-omb”, and it implies that we might get some interesting character development for him.

      @benjaminmarson4622 Před 3 lety +21

      The "Partners as summons" Idea is also was I initially thought, but looking at bobby's attack, it wouldn't make much sense to have it use up Mario's turn. When Bobby attacks in the trailer, he hits one enemy for damage that Mario could have done with a regular attack, so doing that instead of using Mario's turn wouldn't make much sense. Maybe it's a thing where you can call on your partner once per battle, just to add a little bit of damage.
      I agree that the "Thing" Bosses are a fun idea, as long as:
      1. They are creative in their attacks (Like using colored pencils as missiles, or maybe in the tape boss we see the roll of tape leave the dispenser as a final form)
      2. They have personality, like you see them trying to thwart Mario as he gets to the boss, like how in one shot we see Mario getting attacked by some colored pencils. Maybe in the region with the tape boss, we see regions blocked off by tape.
      I also agree that coins could be used as a replacement for XP as long as:
      1. There are useful things to spend coins on, like health upgrades or time extensions
      2. Battles are the best way to get coins (Looking at you RoShamBo temples)

      @@03bgood Well, I think there's a good way to do a "thing" boss and a bad thing. The rubber band man is a "thing" boss, but there is something to his design. He's kind of creepy, the loose rubber bands on his head act as hair almost, and he generally looks like an actual character rather than the thing he represents. But the tape is literally just a roll of tape. Aside from possibly having dialogue, it doesn't feel like a character at all, not even a design.
      For SMRPG, sure there were bosses like the sword, but even he had eyes and they cleverly used the guard of the sword to look like arms. And even if you think the design is a little uninspired, there are literally dozens of bosses in that game that have a far more interesting design. A roll of tape is literally just a roll of tape, I am having difficulty even calling it a design. The creative ones seem to be the ones who designed the encounter itself, as they had to find ways to allow a roll of tape to attack someone.
      To be fair, we haven't seen the game in its entirety, but I can't help but feel skeptical since Nintendo decided these were the best bosses to show off the game with. Maybe they are just the first three bosses, but...the first few major bosses of Paper Mario (N64) were the Koopa bros, Tutenkoopa and Tubba Blubba, all very different characters with varied designs. The first 3 of TTYD were Hooktail (whom I've always thought used the Paper aesthetic well without looking out of place), Magnus Von Grapple and Macho Grubba. I don't know, I suppose I simply prefer this style of boss to a roll of tape and a case of color pencils. Like Arlo said, could they not have a guy that uses colored pencils in his attacks? I don't know...

TTYD would be way better than trying to inch closer to it while copying sticker star.
      Like I've been fine with gimmick games for a long time, I'm one of those guys who likes pretty much all the Kingdom Hearts spinoffs because they actually know how to make good games or at least consistent game design. I’m definitely in the camp of “I don’t particularly like where this is going,” because I just want more of the old style of N64 and TTYD. But I admit that there are some interesting concepts here-I think this is the kind of game I would be super into if it *weren’t* in the same franchise that spawned TTYD.
    One thing I want to add to the discussion is that while it’s nice to see damage numbers again, I didn’t actually see any HP counters except for Mario’s and I think a boss health bar. Having some context as to how much damage you’re actually doing with each attack is great, but without context for how much HP enemies have, it might not help much. (You can argue that many JRPG’s don’t show you health bars much either, and that’s true-but with a turn-based action/strategy game like this is being marketed as, I think there needs to be more context to make those damage numbers actually work in their intended way.
    Also, my guess is that the Shiny boots and such will be consumables that you pay coins to use somehow. It’s not my ideal, but it would essentially be a super-minimalist version of the FP system. More coins = better and stronger attacks, but instead of separate gauges for FP, badges, etc, you’d just use the same currency you use anywhere to buy them on the fly in battle. (Or out of battle at an item shop, like a degrading resource) Again, not ideal in my eyes, but serviceable.

      You didnt know the hp of enemies in the old games until you scanned them. If you fight an enemy twice you'll know their general hp value from when you defeated them the first time. Like if you hit a goomba twice and it foes after you do 12 damage twice then you know its health is 13-24

    • @addisonrahn7984
      @addisonrahn7984 Před 3 lety

      Splooge McDuck I do get that, it’s just that one of the issues I have with that system is that it means you can’t tell for *sure* what an enemy’s HP is in most cases without getting lucky. You just get ranges, which makes a low-damage number system like Paper Mario used to have less tactical and more guess-based.
      For example, I always liked having tattles on most enemies. I didn’t *need* them, but it helps you optimize your attacks. Especially if the system uses a consumable resource for higher-damage attacks, it would be helpful to know if you’re using overkill without a bunch of guesswork or mental gymnastics.
      JRPG’s use a similar system to what you’re describing, but if often works well because the specific damage numbers you deal aren’t particularly important-you’re only really worried about damage ranges. Especially when you get to high levels in a game like Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger, and are doing attacks worth 9,000-9,999 damage each, whether you missed 10 points on an RNG roll is largely irrelevant.
      But knowing a goomba has exactly 10 HP, for example, can help you optimize your battles more when your damage numbers are lower, since you can plan for exactly how much damage you need to do more easily. By extension of the system in Color Splash, you could tell that a jump with full paint would instantly kill X enemy, but it’s all just guesswork unless you really grind out data for yourself. Adding damage numbers helps that immensely (and puts in more in the camp of classic JRPG battle damage systems), but still leaves a lot of guesswork that could be avoided with a rattle system. (Which may even be in the game and we just don’t know it.)

    Kind of what I hope for in regards to the coins is that you can BUY health and attack upgrades, so your currency effectively is your EXP system. If those upgrades are ridiculously expensive, like thousands or later tens of thousands of coins, then it adds an element of strategy and resource management in terms of whether you want longterm power or some short-term item boosts.

      @@parkerdinhwilliams15 Writing off this game as "Just stupid paper gimmicks" without even giving it a smidgen of a chance to do anything creative with them is abandoning the franchise that you loved.
      Everything that turned you and many others off this game ("Thing" bosses, and the paper theme) all of those can be done correctly, they just haven't in the past. The paper theme was used as a replacement for a story and the things served as a way to make boss fights uninteresting. But this time is different, the paper theme isn't the story this time around, replace 'folded' with 'brainwashed', and 'ribbons' with 'chains' and the story hardly changes, the same goes for the 'thing' bosses, if you look closely, you see Mario being attacked by the colored pencils in other parts of the chapter, if the bosses are a menacing force and try to impede your progress throughout the chapter then that would be an idea even the originals didn't even do.
      These characters even have the chance to be even better than TTYD personality-wise, I never grew extremely fond of any partner in TTYD because of the fact that most of them stop being characters once they joined you. Once the partners became part of your party, outside of some chapter-specific dialogue with Gombella, Koops, and Flurrie, they stop being interesting personality-wise, they just stop having dialogue once you're done with their chapter (Outside of some stock story-related lines that all basically say the same thing). Because TTYD allows you to have any partner out at any time, that basically makes it impossible for there to be character-specific story-related dialogue, thus making their character not really have any meaning past their chapter. This is why I like how this game is going to have section-specific partners, it gives us more opportunities to get to know them better. In TTYD, it feels like they were interesting when I first met them, but then they quickly took a backseat to other partners/characters. (Goombella and Vivian are the two exceptions to this, Goombella because she has tattle and her out-of-battle ability, and Vivian because we get to know her far before she joins us) It's a situation where less is more, having less characters means the ones we do have are more interesting and more developed, I don't know about you, but I would much rather get to know 1/2 characters at a time, while having them interact with each other, over 6 characters, each for only a small segment, and the only interaction they have is with the main character that doesn't speak.
      (I've played all the Paper Mario games, and 64 is one of my favorite games, the reason I don't bring 64 up in this is because TTYD as far better partners character-wise, everything I've said about TTYD applies to all of 64's partners)

    Possible theory for the EXP conundrum:
    Confetti (and maybe coins too?) is used to repair the flashier and stronger attacks, and buy new ones. Combining attacks can do things to the attack (I'll leave that for you lot to speculate). Coins can be used to upgrade your attacks and buy HP hearts. Each region has a "town" of its own with a HP heart in a shop, which costs a hefty amount of coins. Enemies will drop coins (As we saw), but also drop confetti. Confetti is used to patch up spots, but also used to throw (As seen on the boat scene), it too, which can be used to interact with the world in ways.
    If it goes like that, then battles could defo be good to get into, because confetti would only be from battles, and you will want to be repairing your stronger attacks for later battles (and patching up holes if you so wish), plus for interacting with the world (I have no idea on this front but I'm sure someone can try and help)
