    Just on 3 phase charging. A few people have mentioned that it doesn’t have it, but the importer has assured us it has. Not sure who to believe! So tread with caution.
    UPDATE 25 July 2023: BYD contacted us with the following statement regarding charging.
    "BYD ATTO 3, BYD Dolphin and BYD Seal in Australia and New Zealand can achieve single-phase charging power of 7 kW (AC)"
    "BYD Electric Vehicle models available in Europe are equipped with three-phase charging power of 11kW (AC)"

    • @HyenaRspec
      @HyenaRspec Před rokem +7

      Even if it does have 3 phase there's not much point if the onboard charger maxes out at 7kw - that can be delivered on single phase 32A. Or if it's like the Tesla UMC it may plug into a 3 phase socket but still only draw from a single phase.

      I've seen people mention that only one of the three Mennekes AC charging pins are actually connected, therefore definitely single phase - and that's not necessarily a bad thing for the bulk of people.

    • @mondotv4216
      @mondotv4216 Před rokem +2

      I'm almost certain that originally they said the Atto 3 was coming with 11kW onboard charger but that appears to be another thing the importer has quietly changed.

    • @mondotv4216
      @mondotv4216 Před rokem +4

      So they've been advertising 3 phase charging all along (checked the wayback machine). By definition a 3 phase AC EV charger is either 11kW or 22kW. Instead they've equipped the Atto 3 with an onboard 7kW single phase charger. Another example of deceptive business practices from EVDirect. Of course a 7kW charger will work with a 3 phase EVSE but that is NOT 3 phase charging. If it was 3 phase 7kW it would be limited to 10amps a phase and would only deliver 2.4kW on a single phase charger.

    There’s actually a 3rd top tether point hidden underneath the fabric in the boot if you feel for it. No idea why it effectively needs to be cut out of the fabric but it’s actually there. Only thing missing from the review was mention of the mess of the rollout as far as warranty, servicing and now delivering of cars. But the car itself seems great. Nothing else comes close at this price point for an EV. Parents are picking one up and I was genuinely surprised when I checked it out in person. Prefer my Tesla but it’s good that cheaper EV options are coming. Great review Paul.

So, because we don't know for sure, we would have to all buy a heavy 32 x 3 amp cable so we could charge at home on 1 phase ( at 32 amps) yet allow us to draw 3 x 10 amps from a public charger. After thinking about this review, the BYD sounds almost perfect as our second car. Most journeys less than 250k can charge off our 12kw solar system with a timer, not used every day. Then I remembered we keep our cars for around 10 years and nearly every lithium battery we have, has failed around 3 years. The 10kwh battery linked to our solar, the Dyson vacuum, my Makita power tools, our phones and pads. My laptop did however last 8 years. So assuming the warranty is 6 years, and I cannot find the exact details, the second battery will be ready to drop dead around the warranty expires and we will be up for big dollars assuming BYD is still around.

    NFC is near field communication. You get two standard key fobs, and an NFC card (tap card). If you open by tapping the NFC on the mirror you have 10 mins to push the start button inside, otherwise if you open with key fob, the key fob must be 'in range' inside the cabin for you to push the start button. When the smartphone app is released I believe you'll also be able to tap your phone on the NFC reader instead of the card (to be confirmed).
    3 Phase AC? - No I don't think so. The Mennekes Type 2 (AC) plug standard is capable of 3-phase, but I believe in the Atto 3 uses only one of the 3 pins across the middle (there is one for each phase) - the others are blanks. Single phase home charging is perfectly fine for almost everyone - either with a standard 10amp 240v outlet or a 7kW wall adaptor. For long trips go the full DC rapid charging (45 mins to fully charge while you have a lunch break).

At first I drove it in "Ecco" mode and it was both really lacking in power and the suspension was terrible, it just bounced around all over the place. I then switched it to "Sport" mode and it was a revelation, it became quite powerful and it really firmed up the suspension. I then discovered in settings that I could adjust steering and regen to "Sport" and "High" and it made it even better, a really nice sports car. I was really sorry to give it back.

    I’ve ordered the extended range model last week. Really liked it. I should be getting it end of march next year. First I was worried about the distributor, servicing and the brand itself. The more research I did the more liked the brand. However not so much about evdirect. Somethings have been improved like the servicing but my main concern is about warranty, it is kinda not making any sense at the moment. I find it very confusing. Once that gets sorted out I’ll go ahead with the order and purchase the car if not I’ll get my deposit back and move on. I have couple of months to see if evdirect improves anything. I’ve test driven it and it feels like a normal car except the humming noise you get at low speeds to warn pedestrians which I found was very loud and intrusive but apparently it’s very easy to turn it off. The test car had 4000+ kms on it and there were no rattles or any other weird noise. The car had a lot of space for its size too! I hope evdirect make their facts clearer so I can go ahead with the order. Also great review!

The unanimous view of swappers is the stiffer sidewall reduces the wallowy ride and also improves handling and refuces stopping distance. Most swappers have gone wirh 235/50 R18 which is the size fitted by byd in other markets. Byd fit continental in Europe but similar reports of significant improvements from other brands too.

    Paul I am picking up my Atto 3 in a couple of weeks and have been researching this car for over 6 months. There is little to nothing I don't know about this car. I enjoyed most of your review but there are a few expressions you use too frequently particularly when reviewing this and other affordable cars. What does " .. well its not terrible!" mean? How close to terrible do you mean? " .. better than expected". Does this mean it is actually good, pretty good, good but not great? ".. actually not that bad" I could make a similar comment. I am not trying to be pedantic but at times such descriptions can give false impressions. I have never driven a car over a lengthy sine wave surface before yet alone at 130km/hr. After doing this test on a specially designed road surface you announce that the suspension is "sloppy" which could be a problem on open country roads. This I believe should be of interest very, very few real world drivers. I could go on about comments made by yourself and other reviewers about the Atlas tyres but until a proper review of these highly regarded tyres (in China) and comparisons made about trye qualities that are important to the vast majority of drivers, let people make up their own mind about them without putting a preconceived idea into their heads. Other than that, a good review and well done.

    • @CarExpertAus
      @CarExpertAus  Před rokem +1

      The tyres are terrible (based on testing all of our cars at this test track - never encountered a tyre that bad…well Ford’s KO2s are bad in the wet, but they’re an off-road tyre).
      On the sine waves - like I said in the review, if you’re a city slicker the cheap and cheerful tyres and suspension will be fine. You’ll encounter sine waves like that on virtually any country road - my last set was on the major road between Adelaide and Melbourne. If you’ve ever overtaken, or driven in the NT you’re also likely to exceed 110. But like I said - if you live in the city, the sloppy ride and poor tyres will be fine.

    Hi Paul, I think Dirac Live in the infotainment screen has to do with digital room correction and presets accordingly and not the brand of the soundsystem.

      I think you’re right! Then it looks like the speakers are unbranded. I couldn’t see any other brands on them.

    I believe the NFC on the side mirrors are so you can use your phone to open the car as you would if you were paying using your phone without having your keys on you.

    I saw one of their EV vans on the road the other day. Any chance of a review?

    3:03 the NFC function on the Chinese domestic market BYD allows you to lock and unlock the car by tapping your cell phone on your side mirror where the NFC logo is. But only supported on Android operating system phones, not sure why, also not sure if it's available on Australian market BYD cars.

      Because iPhones lock their NFC features for Apple's official partners only (BMW only so far). But bluetooth & internet connection works well on my iPhone for my BYD Han. Never really brought my keys with me at all.

    The NFC is for the NFC cards that come with the car, so you can tap the card on the side mirror to unlock and lock the car.

    Agree 100% that having "Build Your Dreams" on the back of your car is super daggy. If I ever bought a BYD car (it would be the forthcoming Seal, not a boring looking compact SUV) the first thing I would do is get some fishing wire and remove it.

    Paul, you described the Atto 3 as being 'light years ahead' of the MG ZS Ev yet Carexpert scored the Atto 3 an 8 and the MG an 8.5. I'm a little confused. Can you please clarify? Thanks.

      I think there should be NFC card as big as a credit card coming with the vehicle. It can be used to open the door.

    You have normal credit card size card key, can use it to tap the NFC spot to open and drive the car without the actual key. The dealer said in future update, you can use mobile app to start car as well
