- Liberalism has been the dominant political philosophy in the West for more than 200 years. Populists say liberals are too elite and are out of touch with ordinary people. Here's what you need to know about liberalism and its place in modern society.

I hope people realize that this video refers to the internationally defined ideology, not American liberalism, British liberalism, or Australian liberalism.
Electives they don't
Oooooh! Thank you for that!
Honestly(speaking as European) American really grew liberty in the world. I'm so grateful thanks to America
Took a minute, but it registered. I listen to way too much American Political squabbling.
Yeah Liberalism stands for both Liberal Societies and Liberal Economies
Yet in US, Liberalism now seems to stand only for Liberal Societies (and they only apply it to the Majority ethnic/religious group), but not for Liberal Economies
There' s a large difference between classical liberals and the new leftist liberals
Progressives
The whole "safe space" movement is over the top and in my opinion only serves to divide different groups by creating separate space for certain people. We do, however, need to realize that this country has many laws and institutions based on excluding non-whites and work towards better understanding and accommodating other races.
How many fake dichotomies can a man cram in a single sentence?
"classical liberalism" is just a new way of branding conservatism because it's too embarrassing for people with educations to align themselves with the right wing anymore.
Agent00F 😂 not at all. It's a form of libertarianism. Please don't say things without knowing about them
Make liberalism great again.

Its called the Constitution buddy you should read it.

It will never be great as long as Democrats and Republicans run America
@@jamesbarker9633 yes correct the bad thing is that the good liberals have to identify as Democrats becasue the independent party has no power

where did it come from cotton eye joe
Where did it come from Enrico Dandolo?
uhmm one thing the united states are not the first Liberal society. The Netherlands was first i'm sorry to say.
the american act of independence is almost a copy of the Dutch act of independence (acte van verlatinghe) signed July 26 1581.
yh I think the Netherlands was one the edge of capitalism and liberalism at the time, I believe the term company(for private business) was even invited there
And Britain was as well - where do you think all those liberal American ideals came from? They were from English Whigs like Locke and John Wilkes.
Everything is a remix my friend

The Dutch republic was an oligarchy
After watching it, i realized I’m a liberal, not extreme but some how liberal. I always thought I’m a moderate.
Welcome to the club.
Probably a classical liberal
Thanks guys, i’m definitely a moderate and somehow liberal. Although i don’t live in america, but i felt the gov is already not as bossy as most countries, yet americans still felt the gov is too bossy. Oh well ...
Sean Frasure because so-called "adam smith classic liberal" i.e. libertarianism is what was described in this video (insert extreme sarcasm)
Classical liberal which is pretty much a moderate these days.
I’m astonished that the Economist in it’s video about Liberalism fails to mention Adam Smith who is regarded as the father of Liberal Economy aka Capitalism.
The state still owns your land and house in some ways, they can force you to move if they «need» that area for something «more important»
The guy is actually using the correct original definition of the word "liberal" (google the French Revolution if you are confused). What he is perverting, and to an extreme degree, is the definition of the word "populism". If "populism" can be used to describe corporate-friendly policy agendas that majorities of the population oppose, and that would help rich people and hurt poor people, then it's basically a pointless word.
feel like he is referring to recent right wing populist movements. Also populist leaders don't have to make laws the people want. Populism is appealing to the average person and going against establishments it doesn't say anything about making laws more about campaigning.
(Like trump's tax cuts that helped the rich more than the poor)
They have to change the meaning of populism and dress it up as some kind of dude you’re the tool of capitalists trope because what populism really is is what liberal democracy pretends to be
@@BeaverChainsaw Trump's tax cut helped the middle class more than the rich.
We must distinguish between classical liberalism and the regressive left...

Wooohoo classical liberal here
There’s no such thing as classic liberalism, the philosophy holds still its values. Its just that many people put a bad label on it or misunderstands a different perspective so they brand it as liberal.
Deos not really, those are exactly what you say they are ,social democrats. Im a liberal but not a social democrat . Read my previous comment and you’ll see exactly what I mean when I say people misunderstand the term liberal .
@Deos no
Social Justice and identity politics are as far from liberal as possible
It's actually quite authoritarian in that sense that the individual freedom is repressed for the sake of being "correct". Although, as the social contract states, one may argue that it's needed to have some kinds of regulations of what may be said and what may result in some kind of punitive measure. The thing is that it can in some cases be hard to decide who are to fit to draw such lines.
Liberals do endorse social justice, not sure bout identity politics tho.
The civil rights movement was a social justice movement... Are you saying mlk was not a liberal?
Kyoto Flowers Common sense tells you to be a decent human being, to treat people with respect and equal, regardless of skin color/ gender.
Social justice is going to far, because it censores ideas and your daily language according to one far left ideology. Every idea should be up for debate. Censoring in the name of social justice is not moving society forward.
rewer What about feminism and white privilege? It is heavily based on identity politics in a way, as it proposes, that entire groups are being held back, or profiting because of their identity, not individual merit.
Modern liberalism is far different now than when it began.
Liberalism is a cancer
it's not... that's only the US. in Germany the liberals form the FDP - freie demokratische Partei (free democratic party) and they are against government interention, high spending and pro self determination. They want to enhance freedomes and get rid of limitations by law. In the US they would fight for gun ownership, here they fight against a movement for speed limits on the highway.
The US uses the term wrongly as mentioned in this video
"I didn't go up there to die; I went up there to live."
Up your game or else... that's actually quite a nice way of putting it..
The phrase "Equality of opportunity" can be misleading because the word "opportunity" therein can be interpreted in different ways. Some might think it is freedom to pursue whatever you want without any barrier set up by the government while others might think it’s the odds of succeeding that are not too low. One is about a right to try which only requires the lack of government intervention. The other is about a right to try with a chance to succeed which requires government intervention to an extent, which is antithetical to economic liberalism, or laissez-faire capitalism. Therefore, the more accurate term that should be used instead is “equality before the law” whereby the word “law” refers to the law which is enacted only to protect each individual from initiation of violence by other individuals.
Another important point to be noted here is the misunderstanding of how the word “liberalism” lost its original meaning in the U.S. as obviously shown in the video. To be more precise, liberalism had always meant what it means in the U.S. until the 1930’s when Franklin Roosevelt and his supporters appropriated the term and started using it to mean a very different thing. That thing is what’s known as social democracy or social liberalism in Europe. That’s why some Americans are using it as a slur for Democrats and other advocates of social democracy and, in a rarer instance, full-fledged socialism. They did not hijack the term; quite the contrary, it’s the people whom they are referring to who hijacked it many decades earlier. If you want to talk about what’s known as liberalism in other places to an American, you should use the term libertarianism or classical liberalism instead to avoid confusion and misunderstanding. In fact, the term libertarianism itself was also appropriated by modern libertarians in the U.S. to convey the classical meaning of liberalism. Originally, libertarianism referred to socialism-inspired anarchism.
I’m not even an American and I know this. You should really have done more research on what you’re talking about.
Beautifully described and dismantled the intentional misleading by the leftist narrative in this video.
Whenever I hear liberals talking about equity, it makes me mad because equity is something you earn. It's not something someone gives you. Liberalism is just a pretty name for communism. And Roosevelt was a communist.
Yes, liberals are actually rightists, not leftists. Thanks to explaining this!

As usual, this video takes an American-centric approach, presenting an American perspective on the world. It briefly touches on a few facts from Britain, includes a short quote about France, and then exclusively focuses on America. It overlooks centuries of history that involved Europeans, Asians, Middle Easterners, Africans, South and Central Americans, politicians, philosophers, and people who have experimented with liberalism, capitalism, and other political currents. Understanding these diverse perspectives is crucial for gaining a comprehensive view of our world.

Is it too hard to understand that liberalism is different in every country? a UK liberal is different from a US liberal or Canadian liberal. This video makes no sense.
+Alex Huang So you're telling me that not every liberal believes in liberty and equality? No, they do believe in equality, justice and liberty.
PJGSJ No, EVERYONE believes in equality, justice, and liberty. Every country just has a different status quo for each. Grouping liberalism around the world together as one idea makes no sense. Someone can be a liberal in one country, but be considered conservative in another.
Americans misuse the term 'liberal'.
Alex Huang Not everyone believes in equality (I do). Also, I completely disagree with you. That's like saying the word athelete is different in Canada than it is in India, because one plays hockey and the other plays cricket. They are both athletes, applying themselves in different contexts, but still athletes. If you know what the true root of the definition of 'liberal' is in politics, then it will travel with that person wherever they go because other countries' interpretations of it doesn't redefine it's meaning fundamentally, it only applies it in it's own unique context. That's what this video is covering, the root of what it means to be a liberal, where it started, how it's seen now, where it needs to go, etc.
+YorickReturns Ok I agree with that Americans use the term liberal to refer to people on the left, even socialists but I'm pretty sure that they don't know how to use political labelings.
Nicely explained.

Economic liberalism shall not be confused with political liberalism.
I would argue that BREXIT was a function of liberalism. 1) Liberals will predominantly prefer decentralized governance over centralized governance. 2) Liberals will predominantly oppose the redistribution of economic resources. 3) The EU is over-regulated, which limits equal opportunities and caters special interests.
We must ask if it was wise to trade the aristocratic class for the mercantile class.
I wonder if the economist is self aware enough, to realize they're based in a country whose government has abandoned the principle of free speech. Paying lip service to the principal, yet prosecuting "Grossly offensive" speech as a criminal offense.

Liberalism will eventually become as bland as conservativism was during the 70s . And conservativism will become the new liberalism.
Individual freedom and a free market are true benefits. Most "first world liberals" now insist that every one think like them. That is most illiberal. Institutions like the EU should. not be sacrosanct. Diversity means you care more about the color palette than you do about the artist or art.

Unregulated Market Liberalism gave us the GFC, rising inequality and low wages growth. The electorate in Western democracies has written it off as a model for economic growth. As a result the left is returning to economic socialism (Corbyn,Sanders), and the right is turning to nationalism and protectionism(Orban, Trump, Le Pen).

These are very important to understand liberalism
I think this word could be divided in two:
Market liberalism (conservative in social affairs, but liberal in market ones) = right wing
Social liberalism (literalism practiced in social affairs, intervention in market) = left wing
I think that, as all that is human, nothing is simple, as this word who's meaning is changing. This division might be usefull.
classical liberalism is both though, but without the other. Essentially, Classical liberalism is both for social freedoms and economic freedoms. The common denominator being freedom. These days the emphasize is mostly on economic freedoms, as many has been taken away (as well as a few given) in most western countries.
As an example an individual true to classical liberalism could have no problem with, say a transsexual person having a sex change, but would argue against such a procedure being subsidized. The same individual could also criticize the same person for their life choices, but yet at the same time be willing to die for their right to criticize them in a similar manner.
It's possible to be pro-free market and socially libertarian. However, one cannot be a liberal if they are socially conservative.

@@blushihtzu Long way to go, time will tell
@@blushihtzu Bernie is not seeking to take the means of production away from a capitalist class and give it to a working class, he just wants people to not have to go bankrupt because they broke their leg.
Socialism is the abolishment of classes. Bernie is not advocating policy-wise for this. Bernie was at most campaigning for rich people to actually pay the amount they used to in America, so that public services can be much better, and there are better social programs to help people out when they are financially struggling.
Did you know before Regan came into power, the top 10% used to be taxed around 60%? Unless I am wrong people now spend like 14%, and if that, in tax. I could be entirely wrong though, I'm not from America.

Liberalism ✊🏼
Liberalism, as most things, has stages.
Not caring what race, nationality, orientation or income bracket someone belongs in is good liberalism.
Not caring that your child goes trough genders like Taylor Swift goes trough boyfriends is a bad form of liberalism.
"does that mean you shouldnt instill him with good moral values"
No one should parent based on your moral values. They should parent based on their own moral values. You're losing the culture war. Get over it.
Gr8 Incarnate well it does. Because you want them to be good people once they are adult. And if you are way too liberal as a parent they might not get he proper guiding.
Being too strict can be worse than being too lenient. Don’t you have to find a balance? And also, obviously you feel strongly about your social beliefs but so do those who disagree with you, and they are parents too, and they also have the right to raise their kids as they see fit and teach whatever value system they want. You’re not going to be able to enforce your parenting habits; you’ll just have to wait until liberals become conservatives. That’s not happening. Society is moving left as time goes on and the human race matures.
Mitch Clark thats why I said what I said in my Taylor Swift comment. I think thats bad form of liberalism.
I dont care about blacks, whites and fucking purples. I dont care about gays and lesbians, I dont care about rich or poor. But if someone goes to sleep as a man and wakes up (thinking he is) a woman is where I draw a line.
And Im not even a conservative, regarding social and cultural issues I am liberal. But at the same time I dont think switching gender is as trivial in every day life as being gay or giving women the right to vote or work a proper job.
Enabling the switching of genders complicates everyone's everyday life (especially around people who arent even male or female but an airplane or something) because of the pronouns and mate searching.
Dating in 10 years:
- Hey you are nice, are you are real female?
-Why, yes I am!
-So you will be able to get pregnant with me in the future?
-Not really.

-No, its just that I was born in male body.
-Didnt I just ask you a minute ago if you are a real female?
-I AM TOTALLY A REAL FEMALE YOU BIGOT!!!

Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit.
