How to Create Custom Embroidery Patches with Velcro - Machine Embroidery Tutorial

  • Creating custom embroidery patches using our embroidery design files could not be easier! During our Patches Made Easy webinar we had a few attendees ask if they could add hook and loop (commonly referred to by its brand name, velcro) to the back of their patches instead of the traditional laminated backing. In this video, we're going to show you how to create custom embroidery patches with velcro!
Creating a custom hook and loop (velcro) embroidery patches is a little different than creating a regular patch. The special type of backing allows the patch to easily be applied and removed from its placement. Hook and Loop backing is commonly known by the brand names Velcro and DuraGrip. There are two different sides, one with tiny hooks and the other has small loops that attach to each other. Creating custom velcro patches is a great way to make your machine embroidered patch more versatile, allowing you to add them to hats, backpacks & so sew much more!
With our DIY simulated Merrow Border Machine Embroidery Patches, the process is incredibly simple to apply either side directly onto the patch. As John shows in the video while setting up your logo and lettering for the patch all you need to do is duplicate the “tack-down” stitch and put it in sequence right before it finishes the patch with the simulated Merrow Border.
Follow along with this video learn how to easily edit the design file in the software to create custom embroidered velcro patches. This is a genius way to create a temporary and reusable bond, that won't cause damage to either side of the fabric.

As the hook and loop fabric is stable I would cut it to size before taping to the back of the hoop. If possible using a soldering iron to seal the edge of the hook and loop fabric. Hook and loop tape is tough on scissors, so you could easily dull the blades of your embroidery scissors if you made a few of these patches.
