The History of Disneyland - Our Latest and Greatest Dream

- By the middle of 1955, Walt Disney had achieved his dream. Almost. He'd dreamed about his park for decades, experimented with building model towns and displays, he'd assembled an unparalleled team of creative minds to work on it, spent years negotiating television contracts to get funding, and started construction a year ago.
And with a week left until the Opening Day celebration televised live on ABC, the park was still unfinished. As the crews, and even Walt himself, rushed to finish building, painting, decorating, planting, and polishing the park, Walt celebrated his 30th wedding anniversary. He threw a party, which acted as a sort of soft opening for his new park, but no one showed up at the appointed time. So he stood at the front gate, nervously pacing and chain-smoking, thinking about the last year.
In this seven part series, we explore the experiences that shaped Walt Disney's desire to build his own magical world, and how he eventually came to realize that dream.

I never realized how hard Walt Disney worked to make his park happen. He was a trooper and hung in there. Wish he had lasted longer to see how much his parks have been enjoyed by so many around the world!
Yeah, his early death is probably a good warning against chain-smoking. But then the modern company wants to pretend like he didn’t smoke, and literally photoshop pictures of him to remove the cigarette 🙄
It is very nice to see how things are fought, but the important thing is to see that it was worth it. His creator surely enjoyed it but, undoubtedly, the following generations have done it more!
great episode as always ! it's really cool getting to hear about the park previews since a lot of people only cover the actual park opening
If there's one thing I've learned in listening and talking to the people who work for these parks, it's that those soft openings and previews are extremely important to iron out kinks and to fix problems. And, spoilers, but the next episode will show how even with those in place, it sometimes can be a bit of a disaster.
