    The gameplay is repetitive once you start going through multiple chapters very quickly in the same way all games are repetitive. There is a certain pattern to the way the chapters are structured, just like every fortnite game has a pattern to the way you go about it; just like every Mario level has a pattern in the way you interact with the environment; and just like every other game is built to incorporate its own style of gameplay. The problem that people have I think is that they’re skipping the dialogue entirely because they don’t seem to understand that while the combat is superb in this game, the game itself is a story-focused game. If you spend the time to read the cut scenes and dialogue in the chapters, then that’s where you will start to see the unique aspects of each character, story and chapter.

    When I was playing the game, I always thought that the repetitive use of “Your Excellency” was super intentional. Lianna called the archbishop father, and called Ophilia her sister. Ophilia called Lianna her sister, but not the archbishop her father. Then, at the very end of the first chapter, when Archbishop Josef gets sicker, she calls him “Father”. Super awesome character development! Don’t know why people didn’t see that!

    A lot of people throw around terms like "grindfest" without even knowing exactly what that is.
    I think those people who think you need to grind to progress say that because they expected to pick one character and go straight to the end of their story. If you don't want to go around and finish other's chapters then yes, you will have to grind a lot. Playing each different chapter and leveling up from that is NOT GRINDING. Grinding is staying in some place leveling up without moving anywhere in the game.
    The other possibility would be that they are terrible and want to brute force through without using strategy in battle. Which is pretty common for the new generation of gamers.

    • @leogi7

But final fantasy and fire emblem were huge when I was growing up, played all of final fantasy 1 and 8, and played some other jrpgs at the time. I think if you’re 20+ you have more fascination with turn based story games.

      @kamuihyo Před 5 lety +4

    • @alexperaza9475
      @alexperaza9475 Před 5 lety +10

      I agree. To me, the fact that their stories don't intersect is a strength of the game not a weakness. It frees you up to play through the chapters in any order or combination of characters that you want. That's what makes the game special to me.
      That being said, sure, if they make a sequel that integrates the party chat into the cut scenes for example, then I guess that might be better? At the same time, I feel like the game is encouraging you to use your imagination about how these characters are interacting within each other's chapters rather then telling you "now this character does this and then this other character does this" etc.

    I had to laugh at Dunkey's video. Not because it was funny, because he said it takes too long to kill enemies. If anyone wants to know a good combo to start with. Tessa+Therion+H'aanit. Tessa can learn an ability to donate bp to H'aanit for H'aanit to use a max boosted Arrowstorm oh her first turn. Therion fits in becuse he can steal sp and donate it to H'aanit as well as steal a +80sp accessory from an npc early on, which is important because H'aanit's Arrowstorm costs 24sp. Using this method you will obliterate pretty much every pack of mobs early on, while traveling the map to collect your other characters.

    The only big boss battle I had problems with were the gods that you fight in order to unlock the advanced job classes. Each one has a specific theme with the way they are designed to fight and it makes the battles that much more enjoyable when you find that one combination of characters and classes that finally puts them down. I still haven't finished all the characters yet, so I probably set myself up for easy mode when it comes to finishing the different character arcs.

  • @sampascoe4387
    @sampascoe4387 Před 5 lety +3

    A good way to solve the character interaction issue would be to have them in little mini "teams" and pairs or a group of characters are involved with one persons story at any given time, and it intersects with all 7 others stories in different ways. It's hard to explain, but the best example of this I could think of is Sonic Adventure. Think about how a large chunk of Sonic's story (spoiler alert) revolved around tracking down Amy in the Egg Carrier, and (spoilers, once again) how Big and E-102 Gamma influenced each other's stories pretty substantially by Gamma capturing Froggy and Big trying to get him back. I don't know man, this was a pretty big thing to mess up, since I (and many, MANY others) usually play RPGs for the story.

    • @SherlockHyde

      I think one of the issues is that they were expecting the story to be told more like some of the games it's an homage to (seiken densetsu 3, the saga games, live-a-live, saga frontier) instead of it being a more episodic affair, which is fine and the game does it well, but if you're expecting everything to connect in a grand narrative, is kind of disappointing.

      Is because of the premise, if you told to people there are 8 playable characters which you can recruit or entirelly ignore they must end thinking the posibilities behind them, being character dynamics one of them. Besides is very odd to have a party where no one influences the other. If the game was set in something like chapters centering a character each wouldn´t be a issue, but the game is set to be played so you found them in your adventure, and having them in your party, also hearing their own story... I just a missed oportunity.

    I slowly starting to like this game, I finally finish the story of one of the characters, and I would also like to address some of the complaints show here:
    1.The lack of a main story: This is still an issue to me, LiveALive did something similar to Octopath Traveler many decades ago but it was still able to link all of it 7 stories and create an overall plot by end of the game. I don't have too much to add about it, besides the fact that I notice that there a evil organization behind the events happening in all 8 stories and that the lore of the world also establish some connections.
    2.Grinding in game: Grinding in this game is very easy and fast. My party is Tressa (thief), Cyrus (dancer), Ophelia (apothecary) and H'annit (warrior), and waves of enemies in 2-3 turns, after breaking the enemy, one spell of Cyrus is all I need to clear a random encounter. Also, if the player doesn't want to deal with random encounters, the mage and cleric classes have skills that lower the encounter rate and pretty much guarantee that the player will be able to flee a battle, respectably.
    3.Repetitive dialog: This issue never existed. This was the point in Dunkey's review that he lost me, and it baffles me people can realize that Ophelia use of the word Excellency is due to the hierarchy in the institution she belongs. This is the same as saying that a king being reference in a book as his Majesty is bad writing.

    Since you did a follow up, I'll do a follow up too.
    Got about 14 hours logged which isn't much in the grand scheme of things. BUT the stories for each character open up a lot after the 1st chapter, and they become so much more cool in my eyes. Tressa's story is my favorite so far. Her chapter 2 was awesome.
    The grinding to get the characters up is still a problem, especially if you start with a core 4 and wanna swap em out. I tried with Alfyn mostly, and I just couldn't do it. I didnt want to dedicate the time or resources. Which is fine. I liked the 4 characters I chose.
    So both my main issues kinda got resolved I guess? BUT the problem of having the characters interact is a little weird. It got to the point where I was thinking to myself, "do these characters actually interact with each other?" Then I hit the chapter 2 sequences, and the travel banter hit. Reminded me a lot of Fire Emblem Awakening the way they did it. So that also got resolved kind of.
    Still an awesome, good looking, and fun to play game. Gets better as you go.

There has been a game that has done much of the very same thing many years ago.. it was called Saga frontier. Multiple characters who all have their own uniques stories that are not affected by others stories, unique battle system and over arching world where you can explore even after the games end. To be honest octopath traveller isn’t really new, different or ground breaking at all for squares line up franchises. It’s just a saga series game with a different name and given proper marketing and released at a time where it can’t be overshadowed

      Octopath is clearly a spiritual successor to the SaGa series. In fact it most closely resembles Romancing SaGa 3. Out of all the reviews Ive seen only one has even mentioned the series and that would be HappyConsoleGamer.

    • @SherlockHyde
      @SherlockHyde Před 5 lety +2

      And before SaGa Frontier there was a game that never made it stateside, Live-A-Live, that had multiple main characters that had their own story. Of course, eventually after their stories finished, there was a major reason for them to join up, but until then they don't even inhabit the same genre of story or world. You have everything from a caveman trying to protect his girlfriend to a psychic giant robot pilot fighting monsters and stuff.
      Seiken Densetsu 3, which came out in '95, also had a system where there were 6 potential main protagonists, and at the start of the game you chose 3 of them to be your party for the rest of the game. The first character you picked was the primary hero, and the characters you didn't pick would just show up occasionally when it was narratively relevant. There were even 3 different main antagonists to connect 3 pairs of characters.

    I believe that they should’ve done the story like Secret of Mana 2 (Seiken Densetsu 3) where the character’s stories intertwine which allows them to interact, but that game is an action RPG, so it would be a bit harder to do that

    I actually like that the stories don’t get bogged in long, long exposition and every party member has to comment on the current situation. It makes JRPGs a slog. I liked playing Chrono Trigger but there were times I wanted to skip the chit chat and keep moving. Octopath is the first JRPG I love playing. Chrono I really liked, but started playing it last year so I don’t have rose-colored memories like I will with Octopath. I also feel Octopath has better combat than Chrono, and dare I say it...slightly better music (and even if chrono were orchestrated it would be hard to beat octos soundtrack.)

      1) I am an (arrogant) masterthief, the most skilled in the world and people know me, and im also very skilled in combat.
      2) A rich mansion owner sets up insane guards etc to secretely lure in thieves that assume they have large treasure
      3) ofc i go there and reach the "treasure"...its one blue dragonstone out of 4, the others are missing
      4) the butler appears and beats me and puts a lock on my arm
      5) the owner explains to me they lured a skilled thief on purpose so the thief can find the other remaining 3 stones, the butler found the blue one already, and if i find them, they will remove the "shameful" lock on my arm
      WHAT KIND OF STUPID STORY IS THIS???
      1) If the butler already could get one and he is as skilled as i am, then let him go get the others?
      2) why do i care about a stupid band on my arm so much, that i travel half the world for their stupid stones??
      3) why do i just not remove it myself, and im a masterthief, it should be easy to remove it...ffs...or at least steal the method to open it from the butler
      4) who stops me from just stealing the stones for myself, surely they are worth more than the burden of having the lock on my arm...
      5) why do they waste so much money on guards (half an army!!), instead of just buying their way into the stones...or straight up buy the talent after a competition, no need for shady stuff
      6) why am i being submissive to them, and actually travelling half the world, exposing myself to all this danger, without payment or reward, instead of overthrowing them?

    Thanks for the video, @BeatEmUps! I didn’t think I needed a “clarification review” or “response review”, but it was just what I need. Haven’t bought the game because I was kinda on the fence with some of the issues you brought up.
    I think the problem some people are having is that they are not really into JRPGs, RPGs or into turned based games; they bought it for hype reasons and didn’t realize what they’re getting into. I’m not a fan of the genre but having played the demo (and having grown up playing Pokémon and Paper Mario 64) I completely fell in love with the premise of the game.
