@@dreamscape3901 Well, "for hours" literally means nothing in this game xD While many people agree that it takes about 60 to 80 hours to complete the whole story, you can easily need 100+ hours for it depending on how strict you just focus on the main story or how much time you invest in sidequests, etc. And the combat system evolves literally at least until the 2nd half of the game - at least. So most people won't reach the completed combat system until 40 hours. And the point where the base system starts to get more interesting also needs several hours of game time, because somewhere in Chapter 2 or 3 you get to the point where your characters can equip more than one blade (its limited to 2 blades first, 3 blades takes even longer), and switching and combining various blades is what fills the "waiting" time you seem to have at the beginning of the game where you only have one blade to control.

Here is how the full combat system works
Everyone does Autoattacks, these autoattacks fill up your abbilitys(which depends on your weapontype).Using abbilitys fills up your Ultimate (up to 3 levels, you unlock level 4 by standing near to your blade). Each ultimate has a element assigned to it, if you manage to do some elemental combos you deal a massive ammount of bonus damage and give your enemy a elemental orb. Dealing damage also fills another bar that is either used to revive fallen allys, or to do a chain attack when it's full. In a chain attack every member does a level 1 ult, if that breaks a orb it continues with everyone doing a level 2 ult,if you manage to break another orb everyone deals a level 3 ult until you don't break another orb.
Well, that's atleast the basics for combat. You also have Itemslots, Blade upgrades and unlockable bladeperks with special effects.
And trust me, you really need to use everything I named once you unlocked everything, this game can be brutal

Also early on when You can't do any of the combos yet (to be honest I don't think you can take full advantage of it until around 70hrs into the game) if you time pressing your skill just after your autoattack connects then your ability bar for other skills fills up faster + there's less delay in animation (sort of nearly animation cancel which is deliberate in this game).
I agree that the game is very slow in explaining how this battling system works but once you figure it out it's VERY rewarding.

    @486693 Před 4 lety +4

There are 2 core gameplay mechanics to this iirc:
    1) The bar on the top left that you see: You are supposed to Break > Topple > Launch > Smash. So what you need to do is the equip blade to your party to try to make that happen. This allows you to stop the opponent from attacking you during this chain and also will give better loots.
    2) The bar on the top right that you see with the aqua etc: You will have those special moves that you uses when you press A, the have 4 stages, you have to chain stage 1 to 2 to 3 to 4, when you reach stage 4, this will inflict an element orb on your opponent. On the later part of the game, the more element orb you stack on the opponent, the more you can chain your special over and over. This is crucial since there is no way you can auto-attack your way to victory in the later part of the game. And you can only chain compatible element, only stage 4 element will be inflicted. So you will have to time and change your blade accordingly and watch for your allies' special to make it easier to chain all the way to stage 4.
The reason why auto-attack is there is simply because what you should be doing is to managed those 2 things mentioned earlier. What you need to do with the blade is to ensure you have different elements of blades equipped so that it is easier to chain to stage 4 and for you to do the break chain too.
I struggled in the first few chapter of the game is with the exact same reason you had. I initially thought it was boring af to have them do all the attacking for you, but there is way more to it. Pity it is only doable when you have more allies, and thus blades equipped.

I think that the battles take too long and in the first hours of the game there is not much that keep you engaged during battles.
I feel also that Rex is too generic compared to Shulk or even other characters in the same game.
The English VO could be better. Lots better.
I do understand that the game takes too long to open up and that the tutorials are ruining the experience for some and are a bit to intrusive.
But.. the story is really awesome, the graphics and the art direction is incredible and spot on in most cases. The music is also fantastic and really get you going. There is sooo much content and many things to explore. I did finish the game and I loved it in the end. Some parts of the game made me quit playing for weeks until I finally rolled up my sleeves and got past that part. It happened a few times during my play through.
I guess everything boil down to how much patience you have. If the long battles (even with lower level enemies) makes you yawn, if you aren't willing too learn the complex battlesystem that will take hours and hours to understand, if at all, since it's presented to you in small increments and what a faster experience you should....
      ...play the DLC Torna instead!
Or press the power off button.
Even YS The lacrimosa of Dana is a better option then. I did like Xenoblade 2 better in the end though even though I did enjoy YS fast pace action and exciting story very much.

I agree, the combat takes a long time to open up fully, but once it does it's really engaging. 53 hours is at bare minimum half of the game (though I'm at 60 and only on chapter 4. Mainly because I really took my time and have quite a few rare blades and am just playing around with them to find the ones I like the most). I would say the game really becomes amazing during chapter 3, which isn't great pacing, I'll agree, but there's like 200 hours of content if you want to do everything it has to offer, so it's not that bad.

13:40 the problem is that you didnt even try to undestand the combat system, that's why you keep losing at the end. If Im not wrong, at that point of the game you, should be able to control your arts and know how they work, if you see on the bottom of each art there's a property they have, at that point you should know that the Anchor Shot makes the enemy drop an HP potion which is essential at the begenning of the game. I can bet you whatever you want that you dont even know what an art is.
And from there, the combat system just keep evolving adding specials, enemy weaknesses, driver combos, blade combos, chain attacks, and all of that gets crucial to win and get more experience and stuffs in the battle.
But hey what I need to accept is that the game is not doing well its job because no matter how difficult the combar system is or not, someone should be able to understand it easly.
At the end I keep saying the same to you, it is an underrated game because they werent able to explain easly the combar system.
You know what? maybe you should start with the expansion, they make the combat system simpler because of the same thing.

I just beat the game in the last few weeks, and overall I enjoyed Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
Even though our main opinions are different but I strongly agree with a lot of things you point out in the review that reminds me how I felt in the early game.
For the combat system, I also got killed by the Shark boss with 2 hits and do not really know what to do. (Cannot think about a logical and stable way even now), and experienced being 1-hit by high level monsters while I'm doing other quests.
With the slow paced auto-attack together with high HP enemies everywhere, it honestly gets boring and frustrating.
Another thing I would like to add is that certain places or terrains are poorly designed, the enemy can easily push you down the cliff or your teammates just jump off and killed themselves, which really irritates me during the whole game play.
But just like everyone said, the combat experience changes a lot when you have enough blades on your team and got introduced to all the combos (Driver, Blade, Fusion, and Chain attack), as well as unlocking driver and blade skills.

Combat in the game developed as you play. Eventually you will be chaining together elemental attacks to break the opponents guard. Certain elemental attacks do more damage, the farther you get down the tree the more damage they do. Once you end the tree an orb will generate and attacking the enemy using elements strong against the orb can break the defense and enter a team attack. So no you didn't give it a chance if chapter three was as far as you got. 53 hours is way to long to be only on chapter 3 and level 17. Have mercy on us all and just look up a guide.
Edit: the last sentence was far to harsh. Genuinely try playing using a guide when you get lost so you can experience the game. If you are lost and frustrated the entire time your not going to enjoy a game. No matter the good your judgment will be clouded with frustration. Love the content anyways keep it up.

If you guys wanna play waifu grind fest go do that. But telling someone who gave the game a second chance "he didn't get far enough" is an excuse. Giving 53 hours to a game is giving that game a chance, I was wrong. However, I do think there was more that could have been done in order to give the game it's best chance.
I want to type an essay, but I'll just be straight.
I wasn't trying to demand anything, I did suggest things to do and give my opinion on the things he did do.
Yes you can sit and watch the auto attacks kill enemies for the first 15 hours, it doesn't force you to do that, but you can. It is true that the combat doesn't open up for a very long time.
Telling people not to express their opinions because they are biased is a really bad argument. Opinions are inherently biased. Both of your comments are made up of entirely biased statements, so why can't my comments be?
I think people should try and temper their bias, something that I didn't do very well two years ago and I admit that. I also admit my opinions have bias.
What I believe I was trying to say is that he did not experience enough of the came to reach a informed opinion on the game as a whole. That's fine. From a average player's perspective 53 hour is giving the game a chance, but the point in the game that he had reached wasn't enough from an evaluators perspective in order to make any general statements about the game.
Also whether or not you like/enjoy something is largely based on what you are looking for when you go into it. I enjoyed the world design, music, and story. The combat was eh, but that wasn't the main reason I enjoyed the game.
Gaming am I right. Merry Christmas, or whatever holiday you do or don't celebrate.

It starts off easy to get you used to the system, but as the game evolves and you get new things and fight new enemies, the combat is much, much more difficult that REQUIRES not just attention, but knowledge behind what you are doing. But when you pull off a huge combo and kill enemies once viewed as impossible to kill, the reward is astounding.

Around 14:00 you asked if you were playing the combat wrong, and I was in the same boat as you for a pretty long time. Rex auto attacks, and each attack fills the cooldown gauge for your arts. The best way to attack in combat is to press the button for an art right after an auto attack, which is called “art cancelling” basically it does more damage and builds your blade combo (A button special). The combat in late game revolves around building up your blade combos, setting elemental orbs on your enemy (done by blade combos), and chain attacking to burst those elemental orbs to do crazy damage. Sorry for the long explanation, but the combat does become a lot more fun, interesting, and difficult after chapter 4/5 with the skills you’re able to unlock. Glad you tried the game again for us

Combat explanation from someone who has many hours put into this game: So yes you do start off with auto attacks as a base, but their main utility is for arts recharge and chaining, you should by no means be trying to take down enemies with auto attacks alone. Arts are what you use most frequently during combat. Many of them have additional effects to speed up the flow of combat and they have a short cool down time after use which can be shortened through various means. One of the main aspects of arts, and combat in general, is the break>topple>launch>smash chain. By coordinating with your other party members you can immobilize the enemy for a variable amount of time. While topple, launch, or smash are active your specials deal increased damage and also refill the timers for the chain. Completing the chain with smash will get you additional items and money. Specials are charged by using arts, so the faster your arts recharge the faster you can use your specials. By using certain “paths” of specials you build up orbs. Orbs are essentially a means of extending chain attacks. Chains attacks are the main thing you’re shooting for in a battle, they dramatically increase the damage you deal and the exp you earn and they can finish off even a high level enemy very quickly if used well. Prior to a chain attack, if you build up orbs, you can destroy them during the attack. Destroying an orb provides a bonus to you damage output and enables you to use more powerful specials in the next round of the attack. It’s a lot to take in initially, but there’s a natural progression to it that makes it easier over time. Held items and affinity chart rewards also make combat noticeably faster. The main flow of a battle should go from a few auto attacks, into arts, and then onto specials. If a chain attack is really necessary you can use one but for most battles they’re more a salt in the wound kind of deal. Also, if you feel it’s taking too long to charge specials, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD CHECK THE AFFINITY CHART. Arts chain is an ability that lets you chain arts right off of each other and it makes charging specials much easier. It doesn’t take too long to get, but if you aren’t looking for it you might miss it. I felt compelled to make this because I, like many others in these comments, was almost driven away from this game by this review, and let me tell you, that would’ve been a real shame since it’s one of my all time favorites at this point. If you’re into jrpgs, I’d ask you to watch a halfway competent review of this game because Wood, despite what his “53 hour playtime” may imply, did not give this game a decent chance.

THE THING IS: the game only really opens up after like 10-15 hours (of commited play) because only then you get to do full combos, team attacks, switch blades for even more combo's, actually having to take into account the enemy's elements etc. (And this is only talking about combat, not even talking about craaazy amounts of upgradability yet)
So PLEASE WOOD, after 15 hours when the game really opens up.... I'M SURE YOU WILL LIKE IT TOO.

That being said, once you get past chapter 3 (maybe even 4), the game finally starts to get more fluid; or at least I noticed I could start getting those level 3 combos and chain attacks much more easily. The story gets a lot better as well, but I guess I’m just a seasoned JRPG guy at this point. By the end of the game, it went from being one of my “meh” Switch games to being one of my favorites. Fortunately Wood, I'm a veteran at this game and have put about 60 hours in now. First thing I see wrong: the way you commit to combat. Remember, every character and it's blade will feature Driver Arts. You saw on Rex Anchor Shot, Double Spinning Edge, and Sword Bash. True combat about Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (especially successful combat) is to identify which Driver Arts your character has with its Blade and use them by their description.
Let's take the 3 I mentioned: Anchor Shot can be used in any physical position around the enemy and when used (especially when upgraded) it can do 2 things for you: 1. It can spawn health potions around you. First smaller health potions but as you upgrade it can net you larger health potions. Use this skill often to help heal your party. The 2nd thing this art does is setup the combat cycle of Break, Topple, Launch and Smash. In a party of Rex, Nia and Tora for example you have Nia use one of her arts to start the Break. Then you use Anchor Shot to Topple. Tora has a launch attack and then once you get a Blade named Roc later on you Smash. The Smash gives you all kinds of goodie drops and completing this cycle does a colossal amount of damage to your opponent.
Next Double Spinning Edge and Sword Bash. These are strictly combat arts but to use each one you need be in a certain position around the enemy for max damage. Double Spinning Edge requires you to be at a position of your enemy's left or right flank. Sword Bash requires you be directly behind the enemy before use. The whole trick that some people don't see with Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (and the first one which is getting a remake in May and Xenoblade Chronicles X) is that (if memory serves) all 3 require a combat style where you're constantly moving around the enemy and striking with certain arts at certain strategic positions for max damage and effect. Auto-attacking will not get you very far in the game alone and some would see this game at a glance and think that's all there is. Truth is...it isn't. Also when you get Blades there are Blade Arts you can charge up by properly following the Attack mechanics and using the charge tree to use Blade Arts which can really bring the pain...or heal...or defense to your party. That's what I wanted to share and until next time I am out!

  • @CanadianAdim
    @CanadianAdim Před 4 lety

Alright so I see any people make the mistake of not using any pouch items at all. You can pick up pouch items from the beginning at argentum to speed up combat throughout the entire game. For an example narcipear jelly from the sweets shop boost art cooldown so you can charge your specials fast. You have to do a level one special then a level 2 and then a third to apply a elemental orb like in torna, that you can still break and extend your chain attack increasing your damage multiplier. Leveling up affinity tree's for blades and drivers are very useful to get good combat abilities for example each driver have a passive ability they get that will let them start each battle with their art's fully charged. When you move you cancel your auto attack animation and when you stop it immediately starts again using that you can cancel the longer parts of the animation to immediately start the fast animation again to speed up art gain.
Certain quests won't have a tracker due to some requiring resources you can (They don't list any good places to find them just the titan it's on not to great).
