    This film is such a double edged sword for me. The conservation effort is fantastic, no doubt, and as a fisherman myself I know that the people most engaged in fish population preservation are those who wish to collect the benefits of those populations. However it feels so hollow for rich westerners from nations that have effectively destroyed their own salmon populations to fly into a pristine wilderness and lecture the plebs about how great it is. They could put the money and effort they spend on fishing abroad into preservation of domestic fisheries, but they don´t. Why? Because our rivers in the Nordics for example are controlled by huge energy companies that have totally decimated salmon populations. That´s a difficult battle to win, so if you have the means you might as well escape to rivers that your living standard hasn´t ruined yet.
    Which brings me to the other issue with this film, the way the "poachers", as you call them, are treated. Salmon runs have fed people since the beginning of time, and regulation for the benefit of westerners is ruining a traditional lifestyle that would actually be completely sustainable without the ruination that western societies have bestowed upon their own rivers. Unless the poachers in this video are netting the entire river delta they would probably have less of an effect on salmon population than any of the classy and proper C&R gentlemen are having by just living in countries with hydro power. Apparently poaching incidents are very rare, so even the C&R stress on the fish population in this specific river could actually be greater than the poaching stress.
    All that being said, this was a great and inspiring film. I just wish people would realize that there is no need to fly to foreign lands to have great salmon fishing. We could have similar fishing much closer to home if we just made a bit of an effort and got our priorities straight. Even if I had the opportunity to fly to Russia for some amazing fishing I probably wouldn´t, because it would mostly serve as a depressing reminder of how badly salmonids are doing where I live.

    • @vikipoyta
      @vikipoyta Před 3 lety +1

      Hopefully as India develops conservation will become a higher priority. The unfortunate truth is that caring about nature is a privilege only afforded to those who have already attained a comfortable living standard. This is a catch 22 since development also often leads to extra pressures on fish populations. Hopefully you can learn from the mistakes we´ve made in the western world, but I fear that since your human population is so much higher it´s going to be a difficult battle. Are there any efforts that you know of being directed towards preservation of fish?

    Love it . Hats off to you guys. The best salmon fishing video I found on you tube.
    Please keep it that way. There is hope for the rest of the world. Conservation is the science that we must share and spread throughout the world. Whatever works to save the species can help them thrive . We keep hearing about overfishing. We’re here we have a pristine river and a growing population of salmon. It’s not gonna be easy but I think it can be duplicated throughout the world .We need to clean up our rivers. This is a great conservation model. And we can learn from it. So good to see these great size Atlantic salmon that we only hear about it. Great to hear him say he took in a 50 pound or that most of the big fish get away. Thanks for Sharing. all salmon should be caught and released till there numbers come back..
    Fairplay to you Russia.

      Add a huge decrease in commercial fishing, habitat restoration that was caused by logging and urban sprawl, dam removal, and dam modification where dam removal isn’t possible. These are what is really needed. Rod and reel releases would help, but not much. Yet none of these solve the issue of the vanishing ocean food sources that salmonoids need. We know volcanic eruptions cause massive food booms. So maybe we could sequester car pollution from carbon capture plants to aid the planktons.

      In the UK we can’t even protect our borders never mind the salmon !! I’m talking about 500 plus immigrants that come over on boats this Easter weekend, 5000 so far this year and it’s only the 2nd of April and there has only been 14 days when it’s been calm enough in the English Channel for the illegal immigrants to cross , our country has gone down the toilet, we used to have amazing fishing on the river Spey and the river Dee but abstraction from the rivers and west coast fish farming with parasites and netting hundreds of seals that should be shot aswel and since 2023 our salmon became a protected species, and what are our government doing here absolutely nothing as it’s all about big business, fish farming and allowing the immigrants in to do the jobs that our lazy on sick people that won’t work because we have a benefit system that gets abused, we used to call it Great Britain now we need big change and reform Nick Farage is the man we need to get in power either as a leader for reform UK 🇬🇧 or the conservatives, anyway I tip my hat to Russia 🇷🇺 you have a amazing leader in president Putin and he’s a real man who loves his motherland and people and it’s rich history not like our bunch of melts like Richie sunak and khan as mayor , we have become a joke , anyway I’m off for two weeks fishing on the ray and Spey at the end of this month it might just fish well this spring!! And to think, it only took 2 men, weighing a total of 425 lb. to overcome a fish weighing 15 lb.

    A typical behavior of the rich toffee-nosed "not to be easily impressed" , after all it's only a fish in a river someplace far away from their warm brews.

    Fishing for rich old guys only. . . places like this make me sick they keep the public out in the name of "conservation" but the true nature is profit.

      They are managing the resource with the fish and ecosystem in mind not people, something that needs to happen more. You see what can happen when we are taken out of the equation as much as possible and its nothing but incredible

      26Coaster you are spot on. Its about the money because it keeps out the meat eaters that just want to take loads of fish home! Go look at Scotland and England and how they manage the atlantic salmon. Not very well because of the commercial fisheries and meat eating fishermen. "IF" people where less greedy we would see more of these fish in cheaper places to catch one. Only remote places still have good numbers of fish. Just came from Alaska and I have seen the difference between what California full of commercial and meat eaters has to offer and what Alaska in remote places has to offer! Big diff! Its not necessarily take people out of the equation but take the greedy A holes out of the equation! We need to conserve as much as possible!

      but you don't understand, fish spawn faster than we can eat, sure its not good to take craploads of fish away, but that's what the rules and regulations are for.

      justin21491 How do you pay for preservation without them? The ones who are ready to pay are also the ones who hold the qualities you are looking for. The ones who give so much to enjoy the nature and are there not just for the food. You need to think over your comment I think.

    The United States should be doing the same as Russia is doing for their rivers, catch & release for all rivers throughout the world.

    Those with wealth and power have destroyed salmon and sea trout in most of Europe with there fish farms and pens. Walking over spawning ground which cause the biggest loses in river. people who been fishing rivers long before the rich and powerful got interested and took over, now call these people poachers and blame them for the loses in numbers in fish stock, there was no loses in numbers before. Think about it when was salmon fishing started and how long before that locals had been fishing the rivers for food and to sell.
