- It's rained at last so I head to the River Coquet in my campervan and spend three days fly fishing for salmon and seatrout in Northumberland. Will I finally break my duck and land a migratory fish on my own? Maybe if I lubricate fortune and satisfy the river spirits with sacred offerings then there might something special in the water for me this time.

Nice video dude, watched it on ferry back from Islay. Has wetted the apatite for season ahead. Tightlines
Many thanks, I'm out for my first cast of the year tomorrow so it all begins again.
These are great videos, well done on that catch - can feel the adrenaline coming through the film!! What’s beauty - one I’m sure you’ll remember for a long long time.
Many thanks, it's true that I nearly wet myself with excitment! The strange thing is that I had a really distinct feeling that a special fish was coming when I made the cast. It turns out that it wasn't a seatrout but an enormous brown. I will never forget it.
Well done m8 that was a cracking sea trout that looks a cracking wee river looking forward to more of your videos
Many thanks Martin, I am looking forward to making more.
That first fish looks to be a superb brown trout, not a sea trout, but it is difficult to say not seeing it in the flesh, so to speak. What a fish, though! Usually, when a sea trout gets to that size, they don't have the red spots.
You did the correct thing a lot of rookies forget in their initial hooking of a good size salmon or sea trout, and that is getting the line on that reel and playing the fish from the reel. It's crucial. What you didn't do quite so well, perhaps, without being critical and more for giving some tips, is allowing your rod to dip almost perpendicular to the water for the first 5 minutes...always try and keep a good 45 degree plus angle when playing a strong fish. Also, hold the fish fully in the water when getting it to recover, here, the whole back of the fish and the top of the gills were still out the water. I find holding them by the tail the best way to do this rather than cradling the fish.
However, even now in my twilight years, the excitement of a good take, a fish solidly hooked and game on, I make occasional errors. Sometimes these results in a lost fish, sometimes they don't. Equally, salmon and sea trout are masters at finding the weak link in either tackle or you, other days you can do everything right and they still make good their escape. It's all part of the sport.
Whereabouts on the Coquet is this? I always used to find it a small, slow, slimey bottomed river especially around Thropton and Rothbury. I much prefer the South Tyne for salmon, any day of the week. The higher - very exclusive and very expensive - Coquet beats seem to be a different river completely, and look gorgeous to fish. Its a river of two halves the bottom and upper reaches.
Hi, thanks for the feedback. I must admit that the adrenalin that comes with a first big fish played a big part in how I handled that trout. It was later deemed to be a giant brownie by the powers that be in my fishing club and a representative of the Environment agency. I was fortunate not to lose it but I guess my luck was in that day. I take your point about keeping all of the fish under the water to recover. Looking back at the video there are plenty of points to learn from but fortunately the fish survived my dodgy handling and swam off eventually. I have been back to visit it on a couple of occasions just to check it survived the ordeal!
All 3 fish in the video were caught on Northumberland Angler's Federation water in the middle stretches of the Coquet, downstream of Rothbury. The Coquet really does need a lift of water to fish well but when the level is right it is a hell of a game river.
Great fishing!! Superb cooking!! Well done all round!! 👋👋🎣👍
Many thanks David, two of the best things in life.
What a wonderful trout! Looks almost like a Baltic seatrout from our Swedish rivers.. Thanks for a nice video. Tight lines🏴🤩
Many thanks Jimmy.
Loverly story. Makes me want to move to Scotland. Thanks for sharing a part of your life.
Thanks a lot I am glad you enjoyed it.
Great video.Well done with your fish, that was an amazing sea trout !!
Thanks Fraser so it turns out that the powers that be at my fishing club (after consulting the environment agency) have decided it was a monster brownie and not a seatrout. Either way it's a fish I won't ever forget.
That’s a good sea trout, had lots off the Coquet over the years, I lifted one out for my brother years ago which was 20lb plus.
Cheers Kevin, I hope it's the first of many. Lost one on the Tyne last night but it certainly wasn't 20lb. More like 2!
Not a bad chef either, last time ii fished coquet was when I was 15 I am now 78 time to go back, best video I've seen for ages we done on all fronts.
Many thanks, glad you enjoyed it. The Coquet is still as good a river as any. Hope you make back for a cast.
Just subscribed ...loving your adventures. I have yet to cast a fly ,been many times on hols round Northumberland ...must try soon 😊
We are spoilt here for the quality of our rivers so you will have plenty of choice if you do make it onto the water.
Great video and glad the effort payed off. That seatrout was a cracker aswell!
Cheers Sean, I'm glad fishing is hard. The millions of hours of untangling knots and crawling through the jungle make the rare moments of success all the more satisfying.
Tight lines
Outstanding video!!!!
Many thanks Earl👍
Quite an experience, these videos would make an excellent movie for us anglers to watch. What an adventurous life style you have, in pursuit of the salmon.....🙂👍
Thanks, I won't ever forget that big trout, it was a real magic moment on the river. Definitely got the adrenalin flowing.
Great work dude. Tight lines. Great videos. Dump your net and get a large rubberised one. You’ll enjoy your catch for longer and they’ll get a decent rest while you get a good long look
Many thanks. I'm in the market for a new net just need to decide on the perfect model for my needs. I like the idea of being able to admire my catches for longer!
I can’t believe i watched a 1hr youtube video, I’m slowly going through all your videos, definitely my favourite you tube channel now, I could see you on TV as the modern day Jack Hargreaves Good Luck to you 👍
Good for you you obviously have a formidable attention span.
Yes I like it. I'd love to be the modern day Jack Hargreaves, I would even take up smoking a pipe.
I'm glad your enjoying the videos but the further you delve into my back catalogue be warned the duller it will get. Life is short afterall and time is precious 👍
Well you made a bit of pigs ear of that big brownie ,, you need a better net ..rubber mesh and wider...nice fish .
Yes I did.
Cool video. Your pup is very pretty.
Thanks, yes she is a beauty.
Well done, keep at it, you are doing a great job, took me a fair few years to catch my 1st fly caught salmon, but after that they came thick an fast, 🎣
Thanks Joel, I certainly will keep at it as it's so much fun. I've got a couple of days booked on the Tyne this week but my mind is already on next season and spring fish.
Thanks for coming along for the ride.
Wow that looked like a huge brownie.
The more l look at that fish l am convinced it is a very large Brown Trout
That was the concensus of opinion of most people.
Great video. You did well, the Coquet is a difficult little river.
Many thanks, glad you enjoyed it👍
Yes it was a sea trout. If the spots go beyond the lateral line it will be a sea trout, also get hold of the tale, if you can pick it up by the tail it's a salmon. If it folds over in your hand it will be a sea trout. A cracking fish though, well done.
Thanks for the pointers, it was decided eventually by fishing club officials and someone from the environment agency that it was a brown trout.
I've been rooting for you, and great to see you catch some fish! FYI: to resuscitate a fish, always hold the entire fish under the water, with the nose of the fish facing upstream. When they are ready to go, you will know it. If you hold them facing side current or downstream, they can actually drown. Cheers.
Thanks, yes I have hopefully improved in my fish handling since then. I think I was in shock because I'd actually eventually caught a fish!
@@abakerslife I'm at the same place right now, so I understand. Day after day with no steelhead. So happy for you and love your videos.
Really enjoyed the video, reminded me of my first Salmon, it was like job done and I wasn't bothered about fishing after. Nice to see you made a wonderful meal with the fish too. Never try to get a double or treble out with your fingers, I had a nasty experience of having one hook buried in my thumb with the fish wildly thrashing about on the other!! Always use forceps.
Sound advice thanks. Gladnyou enjoyed it.
Lovely fish mate little tip for you when releasing the fish make sure the fish fully submerged under the water well done beautiful sea trout
Thanks for the tip, hopefully I'm a little better at fish handling now. The consensus was eventually that it was actually a big brownie and looking back the red spots are very visible on the fishes side. At the time it came as a bit of a surprise that |I'd actually eventually hooked a fish.
Great video and cracking sea trout!
Many thanks, it was decided eventually to be a brownie! Just enjoyed watching you catch a lovely fresh fish on the Dee.
If that was a Brownie it was absolutely huge. It looked around 6-8lb in fact much as I'd love to catch a salmon catching a wild brown of that size is even more difficult I think. Superb video.
excellent!
Brilliant
Pretty sure the rod can handle a fairly heavy fly, it's more a mather of wich line you are using. For the heavy flies choose a skagit type line and i think u will be just fine. I use a 11'4 #7 here in norway and have no problems with weighted flies with a skagit line on.
Still rem my first on fly at 11 now 43 iv had hundreds.tight lines pal
Cheers mate, I guess you never forget the really important things in life.
Well done
Cheers
Monster brownie
Hi yeah but I didn't realise at the time because of the shock of finally catching.
Definitely a Sea tout or a big brownie.
It was decided by the powers that be at my fishing club to be a brown.
On second look it must be a sea trout. No red spots.
It was decided by the head baliff and someone from the EA that it was a brownie. It did actually have big red spots but I think i was so surprised that I'd actually caught it that it didn't sink in at the time. I wish I'd had my wits about me and weighed it as it would have gone down as the biggest brown trout caught on the river in living memory. Doh!
Not sure if this is etiquette but is this a NAF water?
Looks like a big brownie??
It was, I just didn't realise at the time because I was in shock after finally catching a fish.
Where abouts on the coquet was that?
It was all over Northumberland Anglers Federation water.
Did you not see the fish head and tail at 3:59 on the left side of the screen?
Hi Jim, I didn't at the time but I was curious so I had a look. To my eye it looks like a brownie.
All Salmon should be returned to the river, £1000 pound fine if caught taking wild salmon from a river.
Bot
I’m new to this game and still a virgin so any help would be appreciated.
Clearly I am no expert but my advice would be to only fish when there has been a decent lift in water. The Coquet is a hard river and doesn't give up it's jewels easily. I wasted far too much time last year when conditions just weren't right and it got very frustrating. You will have a good chance of a fish on any of the federation water at the moment as at this time of year fish will be spread right through the system. Getting down to the fish is key I think so make sure your fly is fishing near the bottom by using a sink tip/polyleader. The only way to find success consistently is to put the time in and try and get out and fish every rise in water if you can. Sometimes it feels like it's never going to happen but keep putting your fly in the water when the river is right and it will come. When you do get hold of your first fish the sense of achievement will be worth all of the effort.
Good luck 🤞
To he'll with the fishing, what's your address so I may join you in lunch or dinner? 😊😅😊😊😅😅
It is true that I am definitely a better cook than angler!
You need to either handline or play off the reel mate. Stop grabbing the line, use the reel.
Thanks for the feedback but that's a pretty old video from when I was as green as a can of spinach. In fact they were my first migratory fish. I'd like to think I've learned a lot since then.
You need to go visit a tackle shop and invest in a gye net . That's a trout net .
Yeah I got another net eventually. Keep losing them.
@@abakerslife watched the video last night where you showed the new net. Yes a lot better , no one ever lost a fish because their net was too big. I'm a baker myself so I know your predicament for making fishing time. But keep it up the rivers your fishing look great .
@@MrFoxshooter Thanks again, nice to hear from a fellow dough wrangler.
Nice video but.....your unhooking skills are a bit er.....to be desired lol
Thanks but we were all beginner's once. I'd like to think that with a few fish under my belt since then that they are improving exponentially.
More bollocks and wrong tactics. He never learns......get a girlie!
My mate davey used to catch 60 salmon a year at the very same place. Sad what has happened to our rivers
There are still anglers catching those numbers today. Salmon are having a tough time and the glory days may be behind us but it's not all doom and gloom. Here in the north east we have it better than most other areas especially the west coast rivers.
