  • Fairly or not, the United Kingdom has a mixed reputation for its food. But one British street food staple that is beloved the world over is fish and chips. You basically can't go wrong with a big basket of fried fish, fried potatoes, perhaps some mushy peas, a glug of malt vinegar, and a malty pint.
And though the most authentic fish and chips definitely come from vendors in the U.K., quite a few American eateries have done a very good job of recreating this pub favorite. Who does it best stateside? These are the absolute best fish and chips in the U.S.

Run by a Korean family, they're a little on the slow side (each order made fresh) and they are little expensive, but OMG it's delicious. You can get several different sides like mushrooms, zucchini and green beans, all tempura battered, and they offer several different types of seafood such as crab, lobster and squid. All housed in an ex-Arby's just a block east of the Arco on Broadway and Kempf (Skyline), south side of the street. 🐟 😋

I live in Minnesota and I don't eat fish or seafood from restaurants because I don't trust it, being that we're smack dab in the middle of the country rather than being near an ocean. I'm afraid everything is old and rotten but somehow gussied up so we can't see how old or bad it actually is (like what has been done with beef). I've seen those videos of what it looks like when someone from a restaurant or a grocery chain is buying tons of fish. That fish was sitting around in bins for well over a week while these buyers walked around choosing from up to weeklong crates of fish in a warehouse - per the narrator of the video

Chicago for pizza and dogs, New York for white pizza and dogs again, Benson, Arizona, actually a cafe there for some of the best steak I've ever eaten. Connecticut for their Subs or Hoagies, Florida for raw oysters and crab, Baltimore for crab cake ( Old Bay Restaurant), etc. Places that do it right and the same way since forever. SEATTLE: Yall actually didn't visit these places... I don't doubt Pacific Inn Pub is at least good - but many of those places don't last. Heck - I was a fry cook at "Skippers Fish and Chowder House" in Ballard in the 80's. Almost as good as Ivar's but cheaper and "All you can eat." They didn't last; technically there's one or two stores left. Ivar Haglund is "Ivar's" founder, a well known and respected man in Seattle. Albeit he's passed sometime ago. He founded Ivar's in 1938 and its still going strong! I suspect that 'people in seattle' which seem to be transplants now-a-days and probably from the east coast and don't quite care for "Our PNW Fish & Chips" which means: "Ivar's" With Ivar's there's the "Basic Fish & Chips" from any of his restaurants and then there's Ivar's Salmon House sitting upon Lake Union. A bit upscale but well worth it. But then again - there are the great "Clam Strips" at Ivar's (Manila Clams). Not heavily battered deep fried clam strips! Ya gotta try them! I've transplanted myself down in LA. Went to Boston, Jersey, West Virginia and a quite few other places to 'investigate 'east coast' fish & chips' - ALL of them didn't "Puff" - and that was a key at Skippers. See? I actually cut and battered the fish at Skippers every morning I worked. At Ivar's - Alaskan True COD unless you get the Alaskan Salmon or the Alaskan Halibut!!! See - when you cook the fish - if the coating/batter starts to puff - you know for sure that the batter made a perfect seal and the fish inside is getting steamed perfectly. I haven't seen fish puffed up like that in 40 years. It was a thing in Seattle - to go to the waterfront and grab some clam and chips or fish and chips and just 'mosey about.' As Ivar used to advertise: "Keep Clam!"
