- Still jonesing for some fruits de mer, Charlet visits The Arbroath Smokie Man, aka Iain Spink, in the sleepy fishing village of Auchmithie. Here, she obviously learns how to make the famed-and insanely delicious-Abroath Smokie. Then it's onto Oban, the fishing capital of Scotland, to meet yet another passionate man of the seas, John Ogden, at his humble Green Shack seafood hut. After gorging on loads of his legendary prawn and crab sandwiches, it's time to get a handle on the growing turf war between the two local chippies-Oban Fish and Chip shop and Nories-who have been forever competing for the coveted "Best Fish and Chips in the World” title. It's a serious business.

Everything about this was bizarre. From the unexplained slurping of the ice cream at the beginning. To the angry fish monger. To the man lying about where he gets his fish. To the clearly mentally disturbed man struggling to eat the deep fried pizza at the end. And I loved every minute of it.

I’ve tasted that smoked fish and can confirm it is fantastic. You can’t buy it in any supermarket chain. Bit of brown bread and some butter, too..... The way the fish is cooked makes it really healthy and oily fish is intrinsically very good for you. I’m starving, now!

I admire the fact that the host offered to help, a number of times, with prepping up the oven/smoker and the fish.
Over 3 years on and this is still one of Vice’s best series. Charlet is such a great host, the personalities on the show were fantastic, and the food was just great comfort food. We need more Charlet!!!

However, ironically, most of the individuals who NEED subtitles actually do not care much about anything even remotely enlightening

This is such a great episode; I lived in Scotland for many years and the Fish and Chips there is simply the best, especially on the Eastern side of the country. I loved my time in Scotland and this made me really nostalgic.
This was an emotional trip, what the hell. At first it seemed innocent and tame and suddenly it got very real. Good shit! :D

I normally buy ready to eat smoked mackerel from the supermarkets in the UK. And they taste fantastic. Obviously, not as good or authentic as doing it yourself like in this video. But it tastes good. Wish I could try some that are made from scratch, even catch the fresh fish myself also.
Charlet reminds me of when I worked on a research ship in the Arctic and it was full of young scientists and they all kind of looked like her, same bob cut, skinny and when they were working for the first month or so, they acted like Charlet, posh and quite......then when they had completed their research, we still had like 3 weeks at sea..... AND THEY WENT MENTAL!!!
As soon as the started drinking they just went insane, all these quite, mousy science girls just turned into animals. I'm an electrical engineer and have never been on a ship like this. It was Amazing 🙂

Just finished having a fish supper at Oban Fish & Chips and my god it was good! You could see them preparing and bettering whole fresh cod fillets as you waited all cooked to order. Chips were proper thick chunks and really light and pillowy. They had the perfect middle between not too greasy that it’s an oil slick but not too dry.
I’m only here for two nights I haven’t had time to try Norie’s but since this has been filmed Gordon Ramsey, Gino DiCampo and Fred from First Dates had visited and got photos behind the counter after an apparently excellent meal and the place was absolutely packed!
Thank u for sharing with us your wonderful dining experience at oban fish and chips. I really hope that 1 fine day after the covid is totally gone i am able to travel to Scotland to try oban fish and chips.

Superb fun. I loved the section on Oban. I stayed there many times a few years ago when my sister in law lived there. Visited the Green Shack almost every day and ate in the Oban Fish Restaurant. Best Fish and Chips ever.
