  • Interesting to see such a large very busy public place with so many radioactive tiles. Its just the history of this location. Some of the tiles in Union Station located in Los Angeles, California are radioactive because uranium was used as a pigment for some of the glazes.
    Check out uraniumstore.com if you are looking for something to make your Geiger counter go click.

    "don't film me, i'll sue you" lmao
    so given that it's a public place and security cameras are a thing, it looks like she's got a lot of suing to do 😂

    Oh the irony of CA's Prop 56 "Hazardous Chemical" placards on every building diluting any warning it may portend, but none warning of radioactivity.

      I think that would scare too many people. Most people don't understand radiation enough to think about it radiationally.

    Beautiful work on the intro this time round. The Timelapse’s and different angles really flowed together and the initial explanation made for a great hook.

    A number of tiles must have been smashed or sawn when the tile shields were being made. The tilers may have inhaled a significant dose of radioactive dust without realizing the danger.

    Good stuff. I wonder how much radiation the union station patrol officers have been dosed with over time? Those guys tend to lean up against the walls.

    • @RadioactiveDrew
      @RadioactiveDrew  Před 2 lety +4

      Thanks man. I wondered that same thing. How much of a dose are those security guards getting from leaning up against those tiles all day for years and years. The hottest tiles in Union Station are the ones on the front of the building. On contact they put out almost 200x above background radiation and that beta radiation can penetrate clothing.

    Also had to say that I really appreciated this video on a personal level. As a kid, I spent a fair amount of time in Union station and taking trains in and out of LA. I spent a few summers out in LA. What stood out to me was it hasn't hardly changed. Looks the same as I remember it about 20 years ago. Again, great video!

    I just found your channel and binge watched all your videos. Really interesting stuff. Each of your videos kept me engaged, so thank you for that. I knew a lot of vintage stuff had radioactive elements in it, but I had no clue just to what extent. Also I was wondering, aside from CPM could you also show sieverts every now and again on your geiger counter because I'm more used to reading radiation in sieverts.

    • @RadioactiveDrew
      @RadioactiveDrew  Před 2 lety +1

      Glad you found the channel and like the videos. I’ll try and think of a way to work in dose rate with CPM. The reason why I use CPM is because it shows the total amount of particles detected. To show a somewhat accurate dose rate I need to use my gamma filter on my detector. I’ll see what I can do on some future videos.

    I often carry my pocket Geiger counter with me and it occasionally beeps on unusual elevated radiation and it once made me realize I had put one of the smoke detectors in the cabinet next to my bed as it made some low battery alert one night. It wasn’t much to worry about, but benches with tiles using Uranium in the glaze surely would have set off my Geiger counter had I been sitting there. Those clicks still represent each an electron that could have yielded a cancerous mutation or perhaps a birth defect (Beta radiation hitting sperm cells is not great) some day with some statistical chance. These Beta rays only go up to half an inch into the body but that’s still enough to cause concern when you spend many hours sitting or sleeping in such place.

    • @RadioactiveDrew
      @RadioactiveDrew  Před 2 lety

      I think the risk of sperm mutation is extremely low from this radiation. I would be much more concerned with something that puts out more gamma radiation as that can travel deep into the body.

    • @ThinkingBetter
      @ThinkingBetter Před 2 lety +2

      @@RadioactiveDrew Of course gamma radiation would be more concerning, but still, sitting on a beta source isn't what I would like to do for any longer time.

    • @RadioactiveDrew
      @RadioactiveDrew  Před 2 lety

      It does have a gamma filter. I would suspect the reading would be fairly low because there is very little gamma coming off those tiles. Maybe next time I'm down there I'll revisit this location.

    This is another great video Drew, thanks! It's actually sad that today's many crazy activists are capable of starting demonstrating and forcing the city to remove those beautiful historical tiles. I hope that never ever happens.

    • @RadioactiveDrew
      @RadioactiveDrew  Před 2 lety +1

      Would be interesting if they tried. These tiles have been in this one location for 83 years and I'm pretty certain there hasn't been any increased health risk to anyone there. I think the only people that would try and get these tiles removed would be the fear mongers, which we all know now there are a lot of. But I'm hopeful people can learn not to fear them.

    Anyone knows what could be the expected background radiation when you drive on a freeway and pass a car with someone undergoing internal radiation therapy? I passed a car this morning and my Geiger counter started beeping. Normally I get around 0.1uSV/h but something in that car caused the reading to hit around 1uSV/h. I went on the side of that car a few times and yes, it was surely from that car no doubt. The car was with a handicapped plate and I suspect the radiation is from his body. But I was perhaps 15 feet from him and had two car doors in between. I was near calling the police and it bothers me that this one is the highest reading I’ve ever seen anywhere. If someone can impact the background radiation on such distance to 10 times normal, his local radiation must be killing him. Can radiation therapy be this aggressive or should I suspect something else?

    • @mikeschulte4271
      @mikeschulte4271 Před rokem

      It shouldn’t be that high. I’m not a doctor but I watch internal radiation therapy vids and it said that it’s not a huge dose but don’t hold newborns for a long time and don’t be around babies for hours at a time but anything else should be fine

    • @Mr.Fox.92
      @Mr.Fox.92 Před měsícem +3

      Absolutely not, calling the police for that would have embarrassed everyone involved, especially yourself. Not to mention it's unnecessary at those levels, even if you were 10-15 feet away. Using the inverse square law that person would have been giving a dose of about 20-30ish uSV/h from roughly 1-2 feet away. Most likely they had a Tc-99m medical solution done at the hospital, which would match the same numbers that this channel got on a more recent video from someone who had this procedure done. Those numbers are *far too low* to be "killing" him or anyone. EDUCATE EDUCATE EDUCATE. Don't overreact...
