    I picked up a Ludlum model 3 with a 44-9 hand tool. I figure this is best for detecting radiation on clothes and surfaces. Etc. I also picked up a PUDIEL NR-950. This was an impulse buy that I kind of regret. I really want/need a dosimeter. Was considering the ludlum model 25 but I’m so lost with how many devices are out there. Tech is so good now. But I’m scared to get something too “digital” incase we get hit with emp that knocks out our tech. I could keep in a faraday bag. Any help would be superbly appreciated

      Ludlum makes some very solid detectors. I have a Model 12 and 14C both with 44-9 probes. They work very well. As far as a bag to shield sensitive electronics I did do a video featuring this dry bag that also has an EMP resistant material built in. Can't say for sure it would totally work...but I know if you dump your phone into the bag and close it, the signal is blocked. Here's the video czcams.com/video/66dsEciX734/video.html

    1.5 million counts? How dangerous is that holding in your hand?

  • @LenKusov
    @LenKusov Před 14 hodinami

    Radiation does, in fact, help with inflammation. Lots of peer-reviewed studies on it, the general consensus is that as long as it's from a contained source and isn't actually being INGESTED the hormesis theory does hold true, the main issue with radon spas is all the daughter products and lead that inevitably end up in your system. Some countries STILL use nasopharyngeal irradiation to treat severe sinus inflammation, stuff works. Some of the more recent studies came out during COVID when they noticed symptom improvements in patients that got CT scans or chest X-Rays vs patients that didn't, cause the inflammation cascade's a big reason for long-term bad outcomes. There's also the fact it's a heavy noble gas, like xenon, and those ALSO have analgesic properties so the somewhat-immediate relief from it makes it a lot more noticeable. The vast majority of bad health outcomes related to radon or radiation exposure are either continuous occupational exposure over years, or ingesting of things that are bone or organ seekers, and would still be a major issue even if it WASN'T radioactive - see also, phosphorous and fluorine compounds that do similar things despite being non-radioactive. That's really the big problem with radioisotopes and pollution, and why it's absolutely criminal that oil companies can still use their well brine to salt roads in the winter or control dust in the summer - that stuff is absolutely chock full of radium dissolved in solution, I can pick up on my CDV-700 which brands of frozen corn came from Ohio vs Indiana/Illinois fields cause of the bioaccumulation from dust-suppressing farm roads.

    • @RadioactiveDrew
      @RadioactiveDrew Před 12 hodinami

      What kind of count rates are you getting on those roads with the CDV-700?

    • @LenKusov
      @LenKusov Před 3 hodinami

      @@RadioactiveDrew IDK I don't live in Ohio, the corn's about 3x background level but non-Ohio-grown corn brands are background. It ain't much until you consider how most of what's actually in there is Radium, not just radon daughters, so it bioaccumulates and doesn't really leave. There's been articles about this stuff going back a decade or more, the WORST is old oil/brine piping that's so bad it's got neutron activation of the steel, scrapyards won't even take old oilfield pipes cause the steel mills have survey meters nowadays. Coal tailings and especially ash ponds are pretty hot too, the NRC made my dad wear a film badge in the mid 80's at Dutch Gap power station cause of how much uranium and radium are in coal, their plant put out MORE radioactive contaminants than the nuclear plant downriver.

    • @RadioactiveDrew
      @RadioactiveDrew Před 23 hodinami

      All three criteria would be helpful in knowing if a tile is going to be radioactive or not. Usually the red / orange tiles are going to be the most active. But I have seen some exceptions to that. I have an old ash tray that has a black glaze and its just as active as a red / orange piece.

  • @jytube2468

    With the spectrum technique samples, why do different materials emit different types of radiation? I understand that they will likely emit some amount of alpha beta and gamma but just curious as to why some samples emit more of one type than the other? Like polonium is a heavy alpha emitter? Cool video btw! :) Also would you do a video showing your own collection of radioactive stuff you’ve found?

    • @RadioactiveDrew
      @RadioactiveDrew Před 23 hodinami

      I'm planning on showing some of the more interesting pieces in my collection...once I have the time. Different isotopes decay by different emissions based on their binding force. It seems that's the reason why heavier isotopes decay through alpha decay (uranium, thorium). During that decay depending on the stability of the atom a gamma ray or beta particle can happen as a secondary emission. I would like to cover this topic and find a way to present it. Its still something I'm learning about, I find it extremely fascinating.

    I can’t believe how much I learned from this video! I would like to know where you got the Geoelectronics radiation detection screen, and would uranium ore and lower gamma energy isotopes be strong enough to make the screen glow? Also, with beta emitters in contact with metals how much bremsstrahlung radiation would be given off? It must be very little as I never see any mention of this. I would think it would be very low energy on the gamma spectrum, if you could detect it at all, but I don’t know.

You would need a smokin hot piece of uranium ore for that glow to show up. Radium watch hands, americium button out of a regular smoke detector...there are pretty good sources to use. The source needs to be almost in contact with the screen for the best results.

      @azc7785 I hope they figure out something with the sea. I’ve been going there for the last 15 years and it has changed quite a bit. If the water level gets low enough they are going to start seeing those aircraft sitting at the bottom of the sea.

      @@RadioactiveDrew they’ve added hay stacks on the dried up beds along with other projects in trying to minimize the toxic dust… there’s more info on the Salton Sea management Program website. But so far no permanent solutions,unfortunately! Yes,on top of the toxic dust concern there’s the nuclear waste sitting under the lake to worry about too… I guess we’ll find out if you come back down to see and hopefully it’ll bring awareness👏

    210Po due to its pathetically short half-life is one of my least favorite radionuclides, nothing against it but I’m not a fan of collecting radionuclides with short half-lives for obvious reasons even though polonium as an element is quite interesting 😔😔

    The biggest problem is they are run by a bunch of pansies trying to place environmental issues on certain things in order to make more money via fines and the tax payers yet they push newer tech that is actually no better. Thus replacing one evil with 2 additional evils. It’s much like their issues with mercury. We had a very small mercury spill at a local junior high school and they shut the school down for 4 weeks while they performed a clean up of the entire school. We played with mercury when I was little and so did my parents and grandparents yet we have no issues beyond anyone else. Then again we didn’t eat tide pods either!

    Why is it being shown in both 70mm and digital? I think it’s awesome the theater kept their 70mm projector as well as in 100% working order. I’m a child of the 80’s having been born in the 70’s and miss seeing movies on film projectors. There was just a magic to it, a real theater vibe and experience and something that I really miss. It’s much like music from that time as well. I prefer the sound of cassette tape and records and the analog way of recording it as I found it warmer and less perfect and more human. I agree with you take on the movie. I actually mentioned the Demon core and a few other the other near miss situations as well as the tests they conducted to my wife during and after the movie. They really should have added those aspects to the movie. To me it focused more on the scientists and trust issues within the program.

    • @RadioactiveDrew

      I do test the area to make sure no contamination was left behind. Funny story...when making this video and getting those shots of the glowing radium watch hands, one managed to jump out of the folded paper onto my matte. I didn't see it at all because it was so small and flipped onto the backside. So when doing my check for contamination I found it. Then I did a check around the entire table and floor just to make sure nothing else escaped.
