  • THE CRAMPS at NAPA STATE (1978) - I’ve remastered the footage and colourised it.
On June 13th 1978, NAPA STATE HOSPITAL in California became the setting for one of music’s strangest gigs featuring THE CRAMPS.
“We’re The Cramps, and we’re from New York City, and we drove 3,000 miles to play for you people,” announced Lux Interior following his band’s first number, ‘Mystery Plane’.
Part of series of gigs at the hospital to “open the minds” of patients, The Cramps’ performance followed a small set by The Mutants.
“And somebody told me you people are crazy, but I’m not so sure about that,” Lux continued in the video. “You seem to be all right to me.”
Lux, feeling right at home, watches on as the patients join in with the on-stage antics.
“This was a performance seen by almost no one-about a dozen devoted punkers who drove up with the bands from San Francisco, and perhaps 100 or 200 patients, plus a scattering of hospital staff,” wrote Napa resident Phil Barber for Vice.com.
“The show might have been forgotten entirely, or consigned to the realm of myth, were it not for about 20 minutes of footage of The Cramps' set shot by a small operation called Target Video, which documented the event using an innovative Sony Portapak camera.”
Despite the poor quality of the video, the clip remains an absorbing moment in music history.
