    Calling someone “yellow” or “yellow belly” means they’re cowardly or won’t fight or stand up for themselves. Or it’s like saying they’re “soft”.

    Every Kenny song from his time with the First Edition to his death is fabulous! Ruby, The Gambler, Lady, Islands in the Stream... Yellow means coward, unwilling to fight and defend yourself, others, or possibly your nation state. His father says IF he can he should walk away from a fight, meaning there are some fights you can't and shouldn't avoid. His daddy would be proud and so would Becky. It was a TV movie by the way based off the song.

  • @OriginalLictre
    @OriginalLictre Pƙed 4 dny +2

    Dominika was exactly right, she spotted the way the meaning changed for the first and last line of the song. "Everyone considered him the coward of the county".
    The first time it was sung, it just let you know that people didn't think he would stand up for himself, and that he wouldn't fight back.
    The second time it was sung, it let you know that nobody thought that way about Tommy anymore, that they now knew that Tommy could be pushed to the point of violence, but that it took serious provocation.
    What the Gatlin boys did to Becky, they did in private, where nobody could see, but when Tommy confronted them, he confronted all of them at once in a public place, and at least once, said why he was confronting them. Tommy was ready to have his defeat seen, so long as he was seen getting justice for what had been done to Becky.

    Love Kenny Rogers music from when he was with the First Edition (60's-70's) to his solo career. He was a great story teller in many of his songs like "Coward Of The County" & "The Gambler". He had so many hits "Lucille", "Through the Years", "She Believes In Me", "You & I" (written by the Bee Gees) etc. He did a lot of duets such as with Kim Carnes "Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer", with Sheena Easton "We've Got Tonight" & with Dolly Parton "Islands In The Stream". He also did quite a few duets with Dottie West.

    I was always considered to be I guess what you would call a coward cause for elementary school to high school I was always bullied and picked on because of my first name and because I was overweight. I was too afraid to stand up for myself. But a situation happened when after I was married a guy was harrasing my wife and I had to defend her. It's funny how you can find the strength to stand up to someone in a case like that. Just to say it didn't turn out well for the other guy. 😂😂😂
