- What's better than a sword, a really fancy one! but the type of ornate swords depicted in many fantasy worlds are very different to how they were decorated historically, so in this video I'll show you the differences.

Ornate swords serve two purposes. 1: To fight off anyone trying to rob you. 2: To pay off anyone trying to rob you.

3: To fight anyone who isn't willing to be robbed.
4: To intimidate the robber into not trying to rob you. If you're rich enough to carry a blade that fancy, and you're not a noble with a retinue, you're a mercenary, and a rich mercenary is a *very good* fighter.
3: Shank the Gauls.
Kind of like the Italian cinqueda: beautiful ornate works of art, very fashionable and tactically useless for the most part.

No, but if you can sacrifice three goats and the soul of a ginger then it can grant the Gems of Ansyrmordia +5 daemon damage.

well duh. You thought this was going to be an easy quest? Daemons are even harder to defeat than social interactions!
And most gingers don't have souls, you have to convince them to get one, then they have to go get the soul, which can take a few days irl, THEN you have to help them get the ingredients to convert it to a ginger soul, and that is at least a few days of grinding in higher level dungeons.
THEN there is this really high-level social interaction you have to pass with the ginger, at which point they'll give you the soul.
But, for the +5 daemon damage, it is worth the grind.
Just don't try to kill the ginger to get the soul, because then you'll only get one soul and you'll never be able to get a ginger soul again (gingers won't talk to you, you literally won't be able to interact with them) - outside of markets, but normal souls can be expensive, don't even want to know how expensive ginger souls are.
Not necessarily. Unless the jewels are imbued with magical powers you're all good.

I put this down (at least partially) to 3D video games of the late 90s and early 2000s.
Rendering bizzare shapes is easy, especially in 3D. A GPU doesn't care if an object is mechanically feasible, all it cares about is the frame's shape. Making it strange shapes is super easy.
Rendering intricate design patterns on things is very taxing on GPUs if those patterns have any kind of 3D elements, as that is a way more complex frame.
This is why early 3D games just had flat faces, or at best a nose.

This is why I really love the swords in lord of the rings. They are clearly fantasy weapons but most of em look like actual weapons. As a long time WoW player, it always bothered me how fat and clumsy all their supposed "longswords" are.
yeah but in WoW everything is fat and chunky. the people, the animals, it all looks weirdly 64-bit but with more polygons.

Love the art direction on that game, every sword looks mostly in the realm of reality, but amazingly beautiful nonetheless.
It's amazing how much the practicality of LotR does for it.
It's the key difference between LoTR and a lot of settings that use it as inspiration in my opinion. Tolkien knew his stuff, kept things relatively grounded in general which only made the fantastical elements stand out and impress all the more. His inspiration was history and fairy tales whereas most modern fantasy is inspired directly from Tolkien.
There's nothing inherently wrong with having your high fantasy setting be fantastical, I just think there's a lot to be gained by considering why Tolkien didn't overpower his books with those fantastical elements.
Sure, thing is that a hammer can look like a hammer even if its fan and chunky, to some degree an axe canaswell.. A sword however.. mm nah.
You'd be surprised about how much societal norms have changed, despite old rules still in place. For example, there's still a rule on the books in Trinity College Dublin that you are forbidden from entering college grounds without carrying a sword, punishable by a fine.

The throne is actually on the verge of being lethal for the "sitter". Even Aegon cutted himself several times. Maybe it would have been a good idea to unsharpen the blades first

Some of the actual IRL swords you showed in this video are so beautiful it's beyond what i ever imagined. And to me they look way, way more elegant and rafined than any shiny spiky fantasy sword. But it's a matter of personal preference, of course
from a videogame standpoint, one could say in real life it's a lot easier to do a "texture swap" than it is to do a completely new mesh/model
the real life decorators were adding very small, shallow designs that stuck mostly to what a normal sword would look like, and at a distance you probably couldn't tell the dif.
Yeah the fat paddle-like swords are just ugly for me. There are good looking fantasy swords (Dark Souls has a few of these actually), but the real thing is really more tasteful and refined imo. My guess is that video games avoid that kind of designs because : 1.Designers are taught to think about making shapes first and foremost, it's not seen as a good thing for them to have two very similar shapes but with different textures. 2. Game devs don't want to be seen as "lazy" by having the fancy sword just be a cooler normal sword, because "variety" or something.
I actually feel the same way about impractically sex female armor; the badassness of the look of real armor on a woman is sexy in and of itself to me.

I too prefer realistic looking swords than fantasy swords, but Frostmourne in Warcraft III was very very cool... that is until Man at Arms made one and it was quite unwieldly... unless we are the size of joe manganiello.
I remember seeing a replica of the Sutton Hoo sword in a Matt Easton video, and I was blown away both by its beauty, and by how magical it seemed. I can understand how swords like that might have given rise to the legend of Excalibur.
Swords are by default incredibly sexy, but I'm cool with them wearing jewelry as long as they don't take all my moneys and screw around behind my back.

John Colley in fact, if you want to make the decoration as efficient as possible you could have an ornate hilt and scabbard with only minimal work done on the blade. The blade being very slightly decorated just in the off-chance you need to draw it in public.
The real swords just look sooo much cooler to me. I want nothing more than to play a game where all the weapons are in such a style with only a few exceptions. Exceptions being for magic and other reasoning within the fantasy world. Weapons used by giants and all that you know?
Practical beauty is something ive grown fonder of over time as i came to understand how the world works.

I am one of those that likes the realistic things,but i find that the hybrids between outlandish and realistic tends to be the best,like the "Orks and Elves "sword
I agree. It is sad that realistic designs are more rare in entertainment than outlandish swords. As a gamer, I am actually pleasantly surprised when I play a game without ridiculously overdesigned swords.

I love fantasy desingns, but i tend more and more into real medieval stuff and greatswords with this geometry are surely my most favourite (long, slightly narrowing blade, divided handle, thin crossguard) ... And when it is engraved with real medieval art, man, that's just gorgeous! It looks so agile and powerfull at same time.
I think it was the best ceremonial? styled sword I've ever seen, I am of course assuming its a ceremonial sword otherwise I doubt it'd be in that great of condition unless it were a fresh reproduction? I'm abit curious about the history of that particular sword...

Even when indulging in fantasy play, I still prefer the historical and practical designs over bulky and unnecessary pieces. Usually it takes someone to pick up and handle a sword to know what it's like to give their characters an unpractical sword; though I've only handled maybe 5 swords in my life and don't own a real one for myself yet, I usually get a lot of input watching CZcams shows about them. And hey, the historical design of the claymore (with the clover pieces) there's a lot history has given that look fantastic and are practical
This reminded me of a fight in one of David Eddings books, one of the two fighters wears regular unadorned gear (still high quality though) were as the other wears real fancy gear. At the end of the fight the first guy is the winner despite the two having been equals so when the second guy asks how he lost the first replies that all the gold and gems on his gear added weight, not much but enough as they were both growing old. The second guy dies with smile as he was killed by own vanity, the biggest difference between them.
If you haven't read Edding's books I highly recommend them, they are some of my all-time favourites. Anyway I wish you the best of luck and have a good day/night :-)

Next scene is two women battling, the winner being a true warrior in functional armor and the other being a blond wannabe in bikini armor.
There's also a bit in one of the Eleniad where the heroes are sneaking into the bad guys palace, and there are a bunch of guards in Scary Spiked Armour of Evil(TM)... who turn out to be completely useless because the Big Bad Guy was an idiot who'd seen the western knights beat his soldiers and decided he needed some knights too but didn't understand how armour works
Ironically that sword at 4:54 is actually correctly proportioned for the 8 foot tall transhumans it would have been wielded by. Its a 40K Space Marine Power Sword and as Space Marines can deadlift the back end of an 18 wheeler that thing is just a longsword for them. Although with another look the most common variants would thinner and longer.

Another example is that it may look like a sword, but the actual purpose and proper function don't relate to being a sword in the first place. This would mostly be for high fantasy settings where the sword is more of an arcane focus or magic Thingy-mic-jig. Though I suppose there is still the argument that you could have it serve that purpose and still be a functional sword.
One argument for the strange crossguards and crooked blades could be that they need to be shaped like a specific rune, or like the representation of a specific deity. Granted, both can be included on a smaller scale in a normal sword, but going all out might be better for channeling magic
This is a very neat idea - an ornamental sword, unpractical for combat, that serves as a focus for casting magic, just because someone wanted a sword-looking focus. Gonna steal this idea... It's mine now.

This really makes me look closer at Diablo(game made by Blizzard) swords, daggers and the like. Like Karlei's point for example, it is meant to be a throwing dagger(that somehow you throw over and over and over) that looks quite heavy and has this orb with shadows in it.

I’ve always looked at the sword at your right (left of the screen) for a fancy sword. I always liked that sword.
Another important thing to keep in mind is that tabletop gaming had miniatures whose proportions are truncated and thus bigger, thicker blades are required so the model won't just snap, and so it looks proper in the hands of a thick little minifigure..
and the same goes for videogames, where graphics were more efficient in more shortened proportions. So we got used to wanting a sword blade to look big and thick and crazy because you couldn't see the tiny details or a normal long thin blade easily.
i think it should also be pointed out that medieval swordsmiths seem to have put a lot of thought into the ratios and proportions of all the elements of the sword. in the book 'sword - form and thought' peter johnsson argues that similar principles that governed gothic architecture (inspired from arithmetic and geometry) also applied to sword-making. this seems to be completely absent from modern fantasy swords. fine, you wanted to put some spikes on the blade, did you use some harmonious ratio to determine the point where the spikes will be or did you simply just eyeball it? what about the length of the spikes? most fantasy swords just seem so haphazard to me (there are of course exceptions, whether by design or chance, i do not know).
Hey Shad, I've been following your channel for a while now and I must say your videos are really useful. I myself am writing a story and building a universe based on the European Middle Ages and want to put a certain realism to my work. So your videos are really useful and informative. I LOVE your series on the weapons for different fantasy races!
If I may make a request, it would be really interesting to have videos on the everyday life of people in that time period, like what was the life of townsfolk like, what about peasant, knights, mercenaries, craftsmen, servants at court, lords/kings/people who reign, diplomats etc.
I know! I keep hoping for something like that too.
well if you're taking the Fantasy Rearmed series to heart, then I must point something out that everyone seems to have missed. those videos only detail what sort of equipment those creatures would use if they ever *did* go to war, they do not mean that those creatures would be more *likely* to go to war.

WayneAnonymous that's what I'm saying, but everyone (myself included, for a while) was somehow left with the impression that war was the only way any of these races would interact with humans, W40K style.

Fireballs aren't actually that hot, it'd require sustained blast, like a typical fantasy dragon using fiery breath but for for at least 10-30min duration, depending on the metal which might take even longer... OR you know just make an ALL METAL fortress with some big ass forges making giant metal panels that can be replaced if damaged...
So swords were a bit like cars are today. They were foremost a tool but they could be a status symbol and a sign of wealth.
Like having a BMW and a Rolex, having a nice horse (or lots of horses) and a fancy sword is a flex.
My main complaint about fantasy swords is those damned round handles. Edge alignment! I chatted with a guy who makes cosplay weapons, very high quality work, who had no idea what edge alignment was.
I had no idea my comment would get the attention of the Inquisition.
I feel the need to point out that swords with round handles have existed historically and that the are ways to judge edge alignment with a round handle
@FrenzyOctopus Depends on the type of cosplay. If it's just a foam version of the Final Fantasy Buster Sword and stuff of that nature then I can see your point, but more realistic looking weapons it could be that they take an interest and actually research "why" some weapons have certain features. Not improving knowledge because there's "no reason" to ends up with lazy people and tends to end up with society mocking those who do try hard.
The bit about the Codpiece had me rolling too flip'en funny. The video did get me thinking about if swords were made to a persons physical attributes & skill if they could afford it. Hmmm.

Frankly, "fantasy" swords (and clothes, armours, buildings, etc.) always look terrible to me. I can't help but thinking "this is SO stupid". And why do they have to look like they are morphing into an alien insect?

@@peascoutpesante9456 Huge pauldrons, 1-inch thick plates, 10kg swords, spiked armours and blades, weirdly shaped bows with impossible construction and fat heavy tips, all these things are stupidly dysfunctional, those objects would be unusable, in a fantasy setting just as in reality. Real swords and armours were functional AND gorgeous, graphic artists should take a good look at those instead of inventing "cool" crap.

the idea that people would make bigger swords if the had a suitable material has historical president, swords on average got larger with the advent of steel. All you would need is a material which was lighter than steel but ether harder than steel but comparably tough, tougher than steel but comparably hard, or roughly comparable mechanically but cheaper to produce, and people would have started making larger swords.
Mythril ^.^ I had a pair of Mythril claymores and the monkey grip feat... Much FUN ensued! ^.^ it got even more fun with adamantium cored mythril claymores later on... (metallurgy is your friend! ^.^)

Even if a 2-meter sword is as light as the average one handed sword, carrying it around and unsheating would be a hassle and impractical
Shad, you have missed one kind of existing fancy historical sword (functional, but with its own disadvantages), namely the flamberges and flame swords (wave-bladed swords). Those have some fancy blade geometry, while being usable.
Serrations can catch on clothing, so the decrease and not increase the effective cutting capacity. Additionally they increase the chance that the blade will get stuck.

Hey Shad, I had an idea for a video that might be interesting. How about an analysis of weaknesses on real world historical castles? They can't have all been perfect, right? I think it'd be interesting to see if real castles had blunders or missed opportunities like we see in fictional castles, or perhaps entirely different flaws.
What's better than 1000 swords ? A gun. I love swords but guns give me happy pants feelings.
Even if you used light-weight yet stronger materials to make oversized swords such as the one in say 7:50 the sword might be very floppy and lack stiffness to do any kind of real damage. Swords already have very low weight, as a result they are agile, but if you reduced the weight much further, you might get something like a foil. If you increase weight by increasing width, it could be unwieldy due to air resistance.
So, you need several kinds of magic elements to make these weird swords. And assuming that the tiny handle on those overweight swords couldn't handle infinite pressure, they would eventually crack, but it would crack the wrist of the user much sooner, even if he is a superhuman.
There's one way you could put a bunch of spikes and stuff all over handle. If they were made from a material that looked like metal but acted like foam, it might work, like the decorations on helmets.
But here's the question you really want to be asking here-
What about dragons?
Yeah no, the swords would only be floppy if they were proportioned wrong ie to thin and would only be to heavy if you added too much material. as to the handle it only needs to be super strong if the sword is super heavy or the handle is super thin. In other words with the right material and good proportions giant swords are perfectly plausible

The thing about the Greatsword of Artorias, is that both it and Artorias can change sizes, so re-creating them to the "correct dimensions" is hard XD
(It's debatable, but I get the impression he'd normally wield it like a longsword along with his medium shield, and the sword&shield are just oversized in comparison to the player character :P )

I’ve never liked a lot of the fantasy swords and weapons in a lot of mainstream fantasy movies and games, and that has kept me from getting interested in them. I think that’s one reason why I love LOTR so much.

Can we use functional weapons and use runes of illusions to make the look how, we want. (But as a layer, can't interact with object's) Yet get a functional weapon?
For example the illusion of the (Lich king sword) sword disappear as soon as, the person enters a combat and reappears when you're out of combat (So it doesn't cover your vision while in combat )
Could you make a video if you haven't already on parrying with Swords? Not daggers or other weapons, just swords and sword types which are better for parrying.

I've always been a fan of practicality, personally, and my designs reflect my idea of "simple but elegant". The best example of this is a sword I designed for a fantasy world I've been working on. The sword is an Oakeshott Type XIIa longsword with a teardrop pommel. The grip leather is dyed ocean blue with silver wire inlaid in it, and the pommel and guard are plated in silver. There is a spiral along the bottom of the pommel that swirls into a sapphire embedded in the center. On the guard are two more sapphires carved into triangles with concave sides. The guard itself has strongly swept quillons that make it form a sort of trapezoid shape with the long face open. The blade is Damascus steel. The fuller is very broad along the bottom 1/3 of the blade, then abruptly narrows to about a 1/4 of an inch across for the rest of the way up the blade. Inscribed in the broad part of the fuller is the sword's name, Ahkdhraak, written out in the runes I designed. The name is in the world's gods' language, and it means "Dragonslayer" (obviously).
I'd take a thousand swords over a fancy sword. More stabby action.
Shad what’s your opinion on using a chunky heavy fantasy sword used as throwing weapon. So imagine a heavy set strong man swinging a heavy sword and letting go would that do major damage ❓❓❓

Here's what would be an interesting sword for a villain, or some group that operated in the dark - paint the whole thing black, from point to pommel, or just make it out of some sort of black material. In fact, there's historical precedent, in the Russian muskets during the Napoleonic era, as the Russians would take the barrels, and paint them black, so that the sunlight wouldn't just gleam off of them, and give away troop movements at dawn or dusk, or whatever. Then there's the Black Knight thing - painting your armor, in any color, prevented rusting, which was useful if you lacked a squire. Painting them black meant that you had no liege lord to command you, or could be used to disguise who you were if you were dishonorable.
I feel the thing a lot of people miss in fantasy is that they could just leave the blade alone and focus on the hilt instead. Making a fancy helix pattern on the handle and a big squared jewel or something on the middle of the crossguard would go a long way in making the sword look really awesome and magical without really hurting its practicality at all.
Imagine this:
A dark, long blade engraved with runes coming out of a set of gold crossguards that curve slightly forward like horns, with a big ruby in the middle. The handle is wrapped in blackened leather with a gold helix going down to the pommel, which is shaped like a small mace in the same material as the blade. The ruby and runes glow a bright red when enemies are nearby. How awesome wouldn’t this look? And the functionality wouldn’t even be affected!
Om an entirely different note, the sword at 6:31 looks really familiar, but I have no idea where I’ve seen it.

I really love realistic swords but part of me will always love the look of overdesigned clearly impractical swords like the one the protagonist in MGQ uses or anything of the sort that looks like its trying to cram so many details onto the blade it looks more like a broken cricket bat than a sword. I mean its more of a love at laughing at stupid shit than admiring the blade itself but still that kind of stuff is a guilty pleasure
i like a good balance between the two, but also like real looking swords. (mostly because i know how impractical/un-usable fantasy ones would be and that "ruins" it for me, not being able to put that aside,and constantly bugging me. lol.)
How about a episode on whether or not to decorate your weapon/s, to what degree, or something similar perhaps? (Most fantasy weapons look ridiculous anyway, and once you know how basic physics work, it is even worse.)

And I wondered if you had already made a video on Vauban or planned to make one? In view of your passion for castles and since he is considered one of the best military architect of all time, it could be great to have your point of view on his incredible fortresses (although technically it seems to me that fortresses are not castles, although I'm not really sure of that and that's the kind of topic that might deserve its own video, like "The different types of military construction and their lexical field!")

I remember that back in the original Guild Wars the elemental sword ( wiki.guildwars.com/images/3/3f/Elemental_Sword.jpg ) was one if not the most sought sword but my favorite was always the runic blade (wiki.guildwars.com/images/c/c6/Runic_Blade.jpg )
Artorias was one of my favourite bosses, and i have to say, it wasn't made for a normal human. Artorias was around 7-8ft tall. This weapon was like a longsword for him at most. I understand why humans can't use it, because it just wasn't meant for them.

It's also worth noting that many fantasy weapons (especially in video games) bloat the proportions for the sake of rendering the details better on a screen, whereas historically it was something you just kinda carried around with you, I love looking at ornate historical swords because the added details can become so precise you need a magnifying glass to see them, as apposed to fantasy designs which leave comparatively large amounts empty space because no one would ever be able to get close enough to properly appreciate that level of detail.
