I asked my mother for another instructional VHS back in 1987, but they only had Kenny's, so she got it for me... meh... As a 16-year-old and into fusion, I put it inside the VCR with short expectations. The following day I spent my savings on "The Lonesome Jubilee" and have been Kenny's fan for decades now. It will never get old for me. Thanks for sharing it.

Man I had no idea who Will Calhoun, Will Kennedy, Dave Weckyl nor Vinnie C was back then, until I started checking out old VHS or DVDs. Way back, Id go to the music store looking for my fav drummers on DVD or VHS, all they'd seem to have would be Weckyl or Garibaldi etc...again, my faves was like Lombardo & Nick Menza & Lars. So id buy the thing, take it home thinking I'm gonna be disappointed & not like it at all. Bam, my young mind was Blown Away!!! These cats id have nothing to do with before, were more interesting than any metal drummer I ever witnessed! & to this day those guys are my faves 👍

Back when I was 14, I used to frequent the library to borrow this particular gem repeatedly throughout my high school days. I must have viewed it at least 50 times, and even now, I find myself revisiting it every now and then. Kenny's ability to absolutely lay it DOWN and groove like a mofo left a lasting mark on me, and it never gets old.

This was back in the day of Kenny still believing in a hair miracle.

This video reminds me of how high up Kenny used to set his cymbals. I saw Kenny along with Steve Smith and Bernard Purdy and others at an all day clinic by Zildjian called Zildjian Day in Chicago in about 1981 or 1982. I remember Bernard sort of questioning in a joking manner why those guys set their cymbals up so high. Look at Kenny's and Steve Smith's kits today and you'll see how they came around to Bernard's way of thinking.

Having high cymbals is great for recording because it reduces the amount of bleed from the cymbals into the tom mics, so you can edit the individual tracks if necessary.
In a live situation, there is no need for high cymbals, and energy wise, especially how hard Aronoff hits, it is very wasteful. His set up is also abysmal, but he hasn’t changed it in his career 🤷

    The Hi-hat sounds awesome.
I wonder if this was back when many chose the combination of a K TOP with a Z BOTTOM. Typical used by Dave Weckl and many more.

If anyone sees Sean from Malden, Mass, shake him down for my copy of this VHS tape. I loaned this to him in the 90’s. Never got it back. Thanks! 😎

Kenny Aronoff signature. An extreme 5B with a rock tip. I use them and they’re great!

I think the only advice Aronoff should be giving is how to market yourself, make a ton of money and con everyone into thinking you’re a good drummer when you are actually awful. Just 1 look at his set up will show you that he is not someone you should take advice from.
