- In this video entitled, Exploring Glencoe's Secret Waterfall." I attempt to reach and photograph an incredible feature of Glencoe hidden in plain sight!
A couple of weeks ago, I headed to Glencoe to seek out and photograph a hidden gem. I've known about the waterfall for many years but have never actually tried to go to it and, better still, film and photograph it.
Spoiler alert: Tony and I did manage to clamber our way to the waterfall's base. And, despite how it looks in the video, it really was quite difficult. It was challenging, especially wearing wellies when the conditions were a mixture of ice and wet!

Quite a documentary about what senior photographers could achieve with determination and perseverance. My highest respect for that, and I mean it. A really beautiful location and so are all the photos … well done, cheers.

That last shot was an absolute beauty Gary. This video reminded me of a similar hike here in the states that I did to photograph Brandywine Falls. About a mile hike upstream in the creek to capture a view from the bottom of the waterfall few get. Times like that are some of the most memorable moments. Cheers!

Well done Gary that is not an easy location to get to... I tried a couple of times, but water was always too high to get back up the river. 😮

Some great images, but you guys 110% rode your luck going down those frozen slopes in wellies, with a possible fall onto rocks and deep freezing water. Thought you were going to end up calling in the volunteers in the local mountain rescue team for a rope rescue at a couple of places! Definitely one of those lucky days where you got away with things
Even if I did know where you were (which I don't). I couldn't get there and would try even if I could. So thank you for taking me somewhere I will never see or go myself. I can appreciate the sheer effort of getting down and up to the waterfall. The images, despite your reservations, are spectacular. Particularly given the weather conditions. I look forward to your return.
Absolutely awesome. Last week’s workshop with you Gary was just unbelievably by far the most awesome adventure, I could never have photographed such incredible sights without your help support and guidance . So much respect for the efforts you go too. Thanks to Tony as well for everything last week including the laughs we got from your slips and slides in those wellies 😂.

I know this spot Gary I tried a couple of winters ago when there was snow on the ground , had no chance of reaching it, perhaps I will do a re-run in the summer.

Looks like you both had a great time, just a shame the weather was against you. I often think of carrying an umbrella for just such a situation. I like the images but i think my favourite was the second compositions with the white water in the foreground and the mountain in the background. Stunning looking area. The controversy over the location is amusing to me. Obviously all non-photographers or landscape photographers. As a wildlife photographer, there are so many occasions where we don’t disclose the location(s) - to preserve the habitat, not to stress the animal, etc. I thought it would be obvious that once the word gets out about a great, unique opportunity, there is potential for hordes of people showing up, trampling everything under foot. I’ve seen it. Anyway, all the best Gary. So sorry to hear about your Dad.

As a teenager I fly fished many rivers in Colorado, USA. I vividly remember skating across the moss cover rocks in hip boots. It was a challenge then and I've got to hand it to you as I watch you navigate slippery rocks, cold water, and rainy conditions. You da man!
Get yourself some hip waders, man! Or even some chest waders. It's so much easier navigating that sort of terrain than with wellies.
I remember being on one of your workshops and standing looking down at that waterfall thinking how the hell do you get down there. Thanks for showing us all the way, if you know where the location is that is 😁

Once again your effort was worth the gain. Magical shots. I love the naked trees above the waterfall. They added to the desolate scene. Beautiful.
I also think the image at 17:31 is the best one Gary as it shows the waterfall in the context of the landscape. I fully respect your right not to divulge locations but have to say as I live in the south of England I only get up to Glencoe 1/year on average so help with locations by other Togs is much appreciated. I find if it's not a location within about 200m of a parking area most people won't walk there anyway!
Was worried we would see you come to grief negotiating your way down to that stream. Thankfully all was well. Beautiful images and worth the effort. 👏

Walking down that slope looked very dodgy and there is no way i would try to get get down there, let alone walk all the way to the waterfall.

Bloody hell Gary that's a dangerous location. I wouldn't dream of getting down there except for being lowered down from a crane. The photo with the mountain is my favourite shot, absolutely brilliant.

I was thinking the one with the rock in foreground i was thinking going back farther and get more creek in it then pop it was the last picture. Great shots and well worth the effort to get something unique and not a lot of other photographers have.

For sure I can appreciate the effort getting to that stupendous waterfall. As a photographer with mobility issues I can only dream of these places. However I so appreciate watching your channel and videos, transporting me right there with you 👍
Gary, I have had no interest in landscape photography at all, I'm one of those photographers that can look at a nice view, take a couple of shots and move on.
Then I came accross your channel and I've been blown away by the way you show your work, explain your processes and boy I think I may be hooked!
I live on the south west coast of scotland and Glencoe is about 1 1/2 - 2 hours away........I feel like jumping in the car and heading up there now!

Bonkers you are lol! Hell of a shoot that was! Well done buddy! I agree about locations. No one gives Simon Baxter shit when he and many others don’t share. Takes alittle effort to find these places for yourself so people shouldn’t expect it on a plate. I’ve never been there and even I know where you was lol 😂

Nice video agian Gary. Always good to see pics of locations not easily accessible. Shame the weather wasn't better for you both, always a mare when you can't get the exposures you want due to the rain.
I for one appreciate a couple of things here Gary - your effort to bring us this video, and your message about not sharing locations. Anyone with any salt can find the waterfall but it takes a great person to let them find it on their own. As far as a recommendation from this old codger - you ought to think about carrying hiking sticks with you. I know the tripod works for this but you'd be in worse luck if you broke a tripod leg vs a hiking stick. Thanks for bringing us along!

Hi Gary, great vlog as always. Could I suggest you carry two lightweight tracking poles which help enormously in water crossing and a short climbing rope fastened to a tree to help get down and up again, a bit more to carry but the benefits are more than worth it. Well done on getting to the location though and some lovely images for your hard work.

Being an older fellow like yourself I can definitely appreciate the difficulty in climbing over rocks and wading through rivers so hat's off to you for making it through. I absolutely loved the side angle shots with the mountain in the background and from the other side with the big rocks in the foreground. I have to be honest, the straight on shots with the gray sky didn't do much for me. Maybe if there had been more interesting clouds in the sky they would have made them better. I guess it's kind of a double edged sword in keeping a location a secret. Very true if one happens to come across a location that hasn't been shot to death and ruined by hordes of inconsiderate people we tend to want to keep it to ourselves. But on the other hand, everyone should be allowed to go to these locations and create their own art. As happens so often, once a location becomes popular then it gets over photographed and we wind up seeing the same old shots over and over and over again. But then that's where our job as photographers starts in coming up with different and more interesting compositions than the "iconic hero" shots that we see over and over. Keep up the fantastic work sir.

Despite best intentions you appear to have raised a contentious issue here regarding location. Having spent many hours photographing Kingfishers and Barn Owls, all I'd add is that the practice of keeping locations quiet is very common amongst your wildlife colleagues...
Since you seem to spend a fair amount of time wading over slippery ground, be that in rivers or at the coast, please do yourself a favour and get some felt soled boots or waders. They are amazing and you'll feel like a limpet!

My first reaction was “too much time spent walking down to it” but upon reflection I did appreciate the context…urging adventure with safety. Smart to have Tony in tow. Loved the shots and looking forward to your Spring and Autumn sessions at the same spot😂. You reminded me of my own exploits photographing a fall in the Yorkshire dales ( no location to reveal 😈) where I slithered down on my muddy @@@@ only to find an easy path 50 yards downstream. Homhum, live and learn.
Thats looks like an interesting walk in wellies in winter. I missed seeing the damp return to the van , which must have been pretty uncomfortable. You have to suffer for your art after all. 🤣Some good images there. I wonder how long it is before people start to report where it is. Thank Guys

Don’t have a problem with not divulging a location, the difficulty in getting there would deter 99% of photographers anyway so I doubt it would ever get overrun by amateurs or professionals. I have only visited Glen Coe on two occasions and it’s not that difficult to work out the exact spot. Nice images Gary but I think hoping on a flight to Iceland would be easier and there are 10,000 waterfalls there to choose from 😉 many of which have probably never been shot. Personally the only time I would not divulge a specific location would be if it was extremely sensitive to rarely seen wildlife, Otters, Kingfishers, Birds of Prey etc. Hard landscapes are there for ever for anyone to see that are able but all photographers should visit such sites with respect, personal safety in mind and land ownership taken into account 🤔 just my own opinion but rules I follow.

As much as I love your channel, Gary, I find this point of not sharing a location rather petty. We are all local photographers where we live, and it is the inherent principle and beauty of landscape photography that nature is not owned by anybody. If a visiting photographer shares a great location nearby that is news to me, I'm grateful. And if I did know of it, they are not taking it away from me, nor do they take my images away from me. Hell, I may even learn something from them. In this specific case, the location appears to be really difficult to access, so the risk of millions of Instagrammers coming in and destroying nature is nil. I really don't understand what (not) sharing a location has to do with respect. Why would it be more respectful for a visiting photographer to come to a well-known location than to a less well-known one? Is the idea of visiting a non-local place disrespectful in general? Nobody forces you to disclose a location in first place, but explicitly making a point of the topic feels like sticking it to people. Sorry, but as you can tell, I feel quite passionate about the topic...
Buy yourself an OS map and work it out, it's half the fun!

As someone who visits waterfalls regularly as a wild swimmer, I'm sorry, but I'm on Gary's side. I've seen several REALLY awkward to reach places that have been "revealed" on social media literally spoilt by sheer numbers of others wishing to get "that" shot.😢
Well mate, he gave away the region. In the end, it's up to photographers with an adventurous side to go seek the area out. By intentionally keeping it quiet, Gary is also attempting to protect the particular area from being literally "hammered" to death by photographers chambering for a photo and/or for extra views on youtube and likes on Insta and FB etc etc. Not to mention the pure vloggers who are often up for a challenge. It's the kind of activity that can see an area fenced off and/or made off limits to the public, even when it's crown land.
I speak from experience in Australia in regards to this and the nomad movement. Several camp spots have been closed due to it becoming so popular, that environmental damage occured(the spots were "hammered to death and closure"). Then there's the issue with the "weekend" campers, who often leave all their rubbish behind and their campfires still burning. It's a different situation to photography, the principle is still the same. It also happened with bird watchers, 150 "competitive" bird watchers proceeded to descended on a small area near Mudgee(NSW, Australia) when a rare bird was spotted, within hours of the observation going live.
The same has happened and is happening with popular blogging and vlogging locations. They have been so overrun that new visitor restrictions are being placed on such areas around the world.
Like Gary with this photography location, many an Australian will keep a campspot they find a secret if it is not listed on the usual websites etc. I am no exception. Then I am part of a rare breed that drives down disused trails and finds a camp. These spots are never, ever revealed. I know of many small communities who closely guard the location of local fishing holes, fossicking spots and camps spots known only to the locals, for the same reason. They don't want it hammered to death.
With all due respect, this argument doesn’t work (here):
Glencoe may have a fair amount of tourists, but it is not Venice. The location from the video appears to be rather difficult to get to. Add to it that it looks nice but it is by no means spectacular. I’m not suggesting the hordes of Instagrammer are not a problem, they are, but in this situation it is a bit far-fetched. In addition, what is this attitude that our own visits are perfectly ok whereas everybody else’s are a problem?
But that’s not even what Gary said. He said “I’m not sharing it out of respect for the local photographers and because I want to try and make this place here my own”.
Well, I’m not sure what’s really meant with “respect”, but I would hope nobody’s self-esteem depends on keeping a location private to them… Nobody is taking the location away from them, and they may even learn something from others. Is it about the comfort of going to a location and not being disturbed by others? That can happen anytime and anywhere, nature isn’t owned by anybody, and usually photographers can accommodate each other, particularly if there are just a few. Or does the “respect” refer to the ability to monetize a location? Not a good argument either.
After all, there will be very few photographers who shoot 100% of their images from walking around at random places stumbling upon a composition. Most of us quite regularly follow recommendations from friends, books, magazines and the internet. So, we’re happy to take from others but we don’t want to share? Hmmm.
Obviously, the vast majority of viewers will never go to Glencoe, so the point is not to disclose the actual location. It’s a fundamental discussion. And if this point had never been made in the video, it would be a non-issue. But to overtly making the point feels like sticking it to the people.
110% Garry for perseverance , that was some hike down get to your location , I don't know how you felt after getting back up onto terra firma after this , but I can only hazard a guess , it begins with a "F" , super Images Garry , but my favourite has to be either 17.31 or 17.39 both stunning Images , Phil

You've clearly not heard of the saying "Do not try this at home"!!! 🤣🤣🤣 Next time, treat yourself to a pair of fisherman's waders 😂 Glencoe is such a special place, and you've done it proud. Loved the side shot of the Waterfall with the mountain in the background with those fantastic autumn colours and the great swirl of foam.

I’ve hiked the length of River Coe many a time with my uncle who lived in Glencoe many a time it’s a great spot. Appreciate you not sharing its location, as some of the other better known locations have been trampled to death over the years.
Gary, awesome video. You seem to like living dangerously.... I know that my days of that type of climbing are behind me due to knee replacements. I did have a question, have you taken drone shots or thought about taking drone shots in places like that? It would definitely be different than experiencing the shots you take, but to be able to take more shots.
What make are your wellies Gary? I rely on stout waterproof walking boots, but obviously the ankle is the limit!! Your wellies must be good to be able to hike in them all day. I can’t imagine doing so in cheapo wellies. Any recommendations? 👍📸

Maybe a silly question but have you ever tried an umbrella during a shoot?
Keeping that location a secret is a good idea in this case. Imagine how many rescue missions would be needed to get people out of that precarious setting!

I really don't understand not sharing a location to let other photographers have the benefit of photographing them, I for one only get the chance to visit Glencoe once a year if I'm lucky it would have been nice to have the chance to find out it's location, and then to mention a fellow professional who always give out the "What three words" so we can all benefit, think you forget who have helped you and subscribe to your CZcams, I used to pay towards your membership, sadly I'll unsubscrbe I won't be missed just another number

I find it strange that you can't appreciate it when photographers like myself put all the hard work into finding these rare locations.
To assume you have a right to know the exact spot where exploring photographers go is a little pretentious!

I can't get to places like that and I would not recommend anybody else to either, the risk factor I thought was quiet high, you should have put a x on this video....and give it a miss.
