Can't you separate the audio and video into their own track? Then just edit the audio?
Yes you can. But that will remove the ability to switch scenes by active speaker automatically if you want it.
Does this only work with sequences?
Yes. If the files are not separate and the speakers are talking over each other, there's not much you can do.
