Nice little VW Golf Mk5 TSi that I wanted to try out, and to compare it to the Seat Leon of a similar Year, as they are essentially the same car underneath. But which One is best in the real world? which One would I buy again in the future?

It is a nice car,for me and my wife, with no children,it's more then enough space, the fuel economy is quite good,i drove 270 km with a quarter,so for me it's perfect. It's stable on the road and curbes,it has good acceleration from a 1.6.
The BIGGEST problems i discovered so far are the rust that you will eventually get around the front arches and side skirts and the fact that you need to check it for oil consumption. In 10k km that i drove,i basically did the oil change again, that's how much oil my golf likes to eat.I discovered that it burns this much oil on the 4th chamber. Before you buy one, stick your finger in the exaust,if it's black, run. Also,go to a mechanic and take off the spark plugs. If you see any carbon in any of the chambers, chances are that it will eat oil like crazy.Maybe you think it's not such a big deal, but belive me,to check and refill the oil once every week is bothersome.

The Golf is supremely refined to drive however it is incredibly boring, the clutch and gearshift are easy to use but simply not rewarding. However, as a run around it does it's job excellently and I can see why they're popular cars.

I absolutely love mine, I'm 17 and it's my first car and I've been driving it daily for 3 months personally I think they look great and perform decent (like I said it's my first car and compared to the 1.2 Corsa I learned to drive in this is a quick car). They're pretty good on fuel on my last tank I averaged 41.69 mpg, however they do have their problems. Mine has the same issue with the timing chain tensioner and the rusty wings, I've also had problems with the post cat NOx sensor, which wasn't an issue until the new MOT rules came into play, but cost me £415 for a new one and a month after owning it the downpipe split at the flexi-hose but the exhaust isn't a lifetime part. The costs for maintaining the car are pretty low, as parts are available everywhere (in the UK) and are cheap, as the parts cover a range of models, and as such are interchangable, They are very easy to work on too, so you can do most things yourself at home.
The reliability is One of the reasons people continue to buy German cars, there is little that goes wrong, and if it does, then it's not normally expensive to sort out.

Just make sure it has some service history, and that the cambelt services have all been done on time (if it has a belt not a chain) check for rust as usual, and listen for odd noises from suspension or engine, make sure it goes into each gear with ease, and doesn't jump out of any gear under load, this is a VW and they have been making reliable cars for a very long time, if you find the right car, you should have little or no big issue's.

I wouldn't touch a chain unless it's making persistent noises even when warmed up/oil has got to all the parts etc. I think a bit of noise on start up for older chain driven cars is perfectly normal and should fade after the car is warm. I've got a Honda Civic 1.8 where it sounded like a diesel at lower speeds but a full service, spark plugs, decent oil and to be honest a bit of trashing means it sounds much sweeter now. The FSI engines I've heard can get a bit clogged without some spirited driving, problem is for a 1.6 shopping car a lot of drivers won't be redlining it everywhere...

I bet your a labour supporter, and the drivers wing is a different colour, the boot badge is supposed to be damped, and u press unlock twice to open all doors and boot, you’ve got no armrest because you have a poverty spec base model, and yes that’s damage on the door. Not sure what you mean by 2k for a chain and wing though??
