- Hopefully some tips and tricks to make your Passport or Pilot oil change easier. Not how to change oil per se, but just to make it easier. This may work on later model Passports and Pilots as well.
Wow, been changing oil for years and never thought about using a bag to put a filter in. Never too late.
For anyone curious, that "velcro" he's using is most likely 3M Duallock . Thanks for the tips!
I used some aluminum foil and made a kinda a funnel. So when I remove the filter the oil runs in the direction of the funnel. So that the oil does not get on that cross member
Ahhh, that is brilliant! I will try that on the next oil change, thanks for the tip!
I've actually got one of the green folding funnel things I'll be using on this. My wife just bought a Passport over the weekend, so I'm just watching videos ahead of time.
@@mikekerr4874how do you guys like your Passport? Man, this oil filter change looks like a real pain! I may have to look elsewhere until Honda redesigns the oil filter location
@@MaximumDIYGarage we've really liked it so far. 2 and a half years and 22 something thousand miles and it's been great. Oil changes aren't bad once you've done it once.
Great tips....thanks for sharing!
Thanks!
I'm in the market for a new ride so I'm looking into what it's like to do my own oil changes on this vehicle vs the Highlander. You just helped me decide. And look at how close the boot is to the hot filter. Shame on Honda.
Why not just trim away the little indented piece of splash guard that is in front of the filter???
Oh, well I suppose you could. But I think the ability to "fold" that splash guard out of the way would give you more room to work, as opposed to just cutting a little piece of splash guard away.
@@shadowrider90 we had the oil changed at Good Year. I watched the guy change the filter from the wheel well. He made it look simple. For 60 bucks I am getting a synthetic oil change and tire rotation. Doesn't pay for me to do it myself. The tire rotation alone would cost me 30 dollars.
@@josepharmato8032I bet that $60 oil change is $85-90 now in 2023, no?
I would just make a couple of cuts on the plastic shield to form a flap. Fold that back or push it in to get at the filter. Yes full synthetic oil changes are pushing $100 (and can you be positive your are getting what you pay for).
Great job brother, this will help alot. Cheers!
We may buy a Passport soon - think I will get the Dremel tool out and do a bit of surgical trimming of that plastic piece for easier access.
tin snips
I wouldn’t. Did you notice how clean the filter was? Splash guard, that’s why.
@@captainG0729 Bought a Toyota Highlander instead, problem solved…
Thanks for the video. Can a cup wrench fit in there to loosen the oil filter?
My apologies for the late reply. Unfortunately, Honda didn't plan ahead enough for the ability for a cup wrench to fit between the filter and that cross piece. I have tried every which way to get it to work. The only thing that has worked for me is one of those "loop" oil filter wrenches or the plyer-type filter wrench (the ones that look like big channel locks).
@Sean M : I do my own oil changes and its a deal breaker if an oil change is messy or somewhat cumbersome. I almost purchased 21 Ridgeline but decided otherwise when I found the oil filter was placed at such an awkward spot!
i Have 2019 Pilot it could be very much the same thanks........
